MAFP Foundation Advocates at Capitol

On Thursday, January 18, The Mississippi State Medical Association Alliance held their Capitol Screening Initiative at the Mississippi State Capitol to provide screenings for legislators and capitol staff. Members of medical community, including the American Cancer Society, MS Department of Health, Student Health Coalition, University Heart, and more, attended to provide screenings and/or education for cholesterol, BMI, blood pressure, stroke, diabetes, and more.

Sharon Holmes, RN, Outreach and Grant Coordinator for the Mississippi Academy of Family Physicians was in attendance to advocate for a Tobacco Free Mississippi. While there, Sharon had the opportunity to speak with several representatives and physicians about smoking cessation and hear from State Health Officer, Dr. Edney, as well as MSMA President and MAFP Pas-President, Dr. Mitchell, who provided information about the 2023 Mississippi report card.

Legislative Update

As the 2024 Legislative Session is underway, Mississippi Governor Tate Reeves called for a special session within the regular session to advance economic development in the state.

The Mississippi Legislature approved a new development project in north Mississippi on Thursday. Located in Marshall County, the nearly $2 billion development will produce and transport electric batteries intended to power commercial vehicles. The project will provide 2,000 jobs with an average salary of $66,000.

With chairs being named, several committees have begun holding their first meetings of the year. Over 400 bills have already been referred to various committees. While the first deadline day for committee action is not until March 5, Speaker of the House Jason White said a bill initiative could see some action beginning next week.
