Dear Temple Emanu-El Family,

This past Shabbat morning, at the entrance to our driveway, two men holding signs protesting Israel, Zionism and my strong support for Israel, greeted worshippers.

The signs read, "Zionism Threatens us All" and "When will Jews notice that Israel is INSANE."

The Closter Police were immediately notified and instantly came to the scene. There was no need for intervention, though the police force kept a vigilant patrol of the area and stayed in regular communication with us since the incident. By the conclusion of services the men had left the scene.

No one knows who these people were or what, if any group they represent.

Nothing is more important to me personally, and our entire congregation then your personal safety. We are fortunate to have a strong and bilateral relationship with the Closter Police Department. They assured us they will continue to give Temple Emanu-El more attention during this tumultuous time especially during programs and religious services. Additionally, Temple Emanu-El has devoted significant resources and expertise into security enhancements around the building. For obvious reasons, we cannot divulge those improvements. However, if you see something suspect or witness suspicious activity, whether at the Temple or when in the neighborhood, please notify the Closter Police immediately.

If these or other protesters return to our Temple and you encounter them on or near Temple property, we implore you to not engage with them. Only navet or arrogance will allow us to think that our words and passion will sway their minds. To pay no attention is the best way to silence them. If any protester should verbally or physically attack you, please let the Police know immediately.

These men were not violent and within their rights to stand on public property and share their views regardless of how abhorrent we find such views. I am proud to live in a country that allows them to exercise their freedom of speech. Ironically, the only country in the Middle East where these two men could do the same is, of course, in Israel.

The unrest in Israel has brought many haters out of the woodwork. Synagogues and JCCs are among the central addresses for people to spew their vitriolic anger. This is not the first time in our history that such hate has circulated. Lets pray it is one of the last.

Thank you for your cooperation in this matter.

Israel: What You Can Do

One of the saddest days of my rabbinate was this past Friday morning when I had to make the difficult decision to postpone our long anticipated family trip to Israel, scheduled for departure this August 18, 2014.  We have rescheduled the trip for the end of August, 2015.

Many have asked what they can do to help Israel during this time. I suggest the following things:

1. Go To Israel

Temple Emanu-El is partnering with other leadership groups for a solidarity mission on August 24-27. The visit will include US Congressional leadership, Knesset visits, Iron Dome battery visits, hospital visits to injured soldiers, supporting front lines soldiers with meals and hugs, delivering toys to kids in the south most affected by rockets, taking lone soldiers for meals,  shiva and consolation visits to bereaved families of Israel and opportunities to support the economy. This mission is open to all people over the age of 18 with a valid passport.

The land only package details will be finalized in the coming hours but should run about $1500. We will be based in Jerusalem, and will include most meals and all programs and transportation.  Call the Temple office or email me, kirshner@templeemanu-el.com for information. This is the most potent way we can show our support for Israel during this trying time.

2.  Buy Israeli products, including investing in Israeli companies.

3. Bring supplies to the Temple for soldiers. The troops could use new toiletries and socks, t-shirts and more. There is a bin at the front door of the administrative wing. These materials will all be hand delivered on our mission.

4. Call and write any and all media sources with biased slants against Israel. Your words matter.

5. Pray for our soldiers and our homeland.

REMINDER:

Please join us tomorrow, Tuesday, August 5th at 7:30pm when Rabbi Kirshner will present an overview of the current situation in Israel and help clarify the often contradicting information coming out of various media outlets.

He will give a brief historical background on what has led up to Operation Protective Edge, and what life is like for Israeli citizens going through this first hand.

There will also be a discussion about what we can do on an individual and communal level to separate facts from propaganda and do our part to support our Israeli brothers and sisters through this challenging time.

In addition, there will be an opportunity for children of all ages to make cards for the IDF soldiers as well as other Israel themed arts and crafts projects.
