Dear Staff and Families,

Yesterday, we had a seemingly normal day at the JCC. Children had fun, learned and enjoyed being at school and playing with friends. We had no idea of the tragedy unfolding in Uvalde, Texas. Naturally, as a community, we are extremely saddened that something like this could ever happen.

This brings us to the inevitable concerns about the security of our preschool and JCC. As you know, the safety of our students, staff and members is a priority and we take it very seriously. With that in mind, I want to take a moment to remind parents of the security measures currently in place and enhancements to come.

  • The Kaiserman JCC has comprehensive security procedures in place for a variety of situations, including the circumstances in Texas. Our emergency plan has been reviewed by experts in the field of security and we have been told that our preparedness plan is excellent.
  • We have been enhancing security over the last several years across our campus, thanks to the generosity of donors and grants from the state and federal government. We have made these investments strategically with guidance from those same experts mentioned above.
  • Since there is always room for improvement, in March 2022, the Kaiserman JCC started participating in a special, yearlong program through the Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia called the Jewish Emergency Preparedness Project, or JEPP. This program is broken up into 3 parts. First, evaluation of security needs. Second, emergency plan review and enhancement. And last, live exercises and trainings. Through JEPP, we expect to further strengthen our ability to prevent, mitigate, and support our community through any crises.
  • We are in regular contact with the JCC Association, Jewish Federation of Greater Philadelphia, the Jewish Community’s Secure Community Network, the FBI, and local law enforcement. These partners not only keep us informed, but visit our site regularly, supporting our safety apparatus. In addition, our most important partner is our neighbor at Perelman Jewish Day School, who we coordinate with daily on security for our campus.
  • Finally, we continue to invest in this area. You have noticed the changes to access control in our main lobby. Further enhancements are coming over the next several months and will be aligned with the findings and advice of experts like JEPP.

We know that it's at times like these that we feel especially vulnerable, but we can draw strength from our connections to each other. We can also find solace in action and supporting each other. As a reminder:

  • Be aware. Keep safety and security top of mind when on site.
  • If something or someone seems suspicious, or out of place, please report it to a staff member immediately.
  • Get involved. Through JEPP we are starting a security committee. Let us know if you would like to participate.
  • Ask questions. We are here and available to discuss these matters generally, and open to suggestions about enhancing our efforts.

We will continue to take proactive measures to protect the safety of our students staff and members. The purpose for sharing this information with you is not to cause you worry, but to reassure you that we are prepared to handle all types of emergencies.

Warmly,

Amy
