Protect Your Accounts, One Habit at a Time

MAKE SECURITY PART OF YOUR ROUTINE

A second look at a text. A check of your transactions. A stronger password. Small habits can help protect your accounts. This National Cybersecurity Awareness Month, First Community Bank and Trust is sharing simple ways to stay safer online.

Let's Start With These Scenarios

WHAT WOULD YOU DO?

Scenario 1:

While checking your bank account, you notice a $3.89 debit card charge from a merchant you don't recognize. It's a small amount, so you assume you probably bought something and forgot about it. A few days later, you notice another unfamiliar charge. Now you're wondering whether the transactions are connected or whether someone has your card information.

Would you ignore the first charge because it was so small?

The Safest Response: Take unfamiliar transactions seriously, regardless of the amount. Small charges can sometimes be used to test stolen card information before larger purchases are made. Review your transactions and contact us promptly to report anything suspicious.

Scenario 2:

Your phone rings and the caller says they're from FCBT's fraud department. They know your name and the last four digits of your debit card. They explain that someone is trying to access your account and say they need the six-digit verification code just sent to your phone to stop the transaction. The caller sounds professional and assures you that they're trying to protect your money.

Would you give them the code? Why or why not?

The Safest Response: Don't share the code. Even when a caller knows some of your information, that doesn't prove they're legitimate. Hang up and contact us using one of our trusted phone numbers. Never share one-time verification codes with someone who contacts you unexpectedly.

Scenario 3:

You're at work when a text arrives claiming your debit card was used for a $487 purchase you don't recognize. The message says your card has been temporarily locked and includes a link to verify the transaction. You're worried someone has access to your money and the link looks official. You only have a few minutes before your next meeting.

Would you click the link?

The Safest Response: Don't click the link just because the message seems urgent. Log in to First eBanc directly to review your transactions. First eAlerts delivered through an additional method can offer another point of reference, but always verify suspicious messages through a trusted banking channel.
