Holiday Traditions in Mexico & the Dominican Republic
|
|
Oaxaca, Mexico - Calendas |
The highlight of the Christmas festivities, was most definitely the nativity processions taking place on Christmas Eve, called calendas. Different churches and groups put together floats with mostly nativity scenes. There are also giant puppets, all proceeding toward the Zocalo (main square).

San Miguel De Allende, Mexico – Las Posadas |
Celebrated from December 16th to 24th in San Miguel and throughout Mexico, Each night of the festivities, family members go to a different home to celebrate. The word ‘Posada‘ translates into ‘inn‘ as the procession from home to home represents Mary and Joseph’s pilgrimage to find the inn. The end of each night is capped off with the breaking of a piñata, often also represented in tin piñata star decorations.

Dominican Republic - Charamicos |
A sight that will become very familiar if you’re visiting the Dominican Republic around the holidays is the glittering beauty of charamicos. Charamicos are Dominican Christmas trees, essentially. Of course, there aren’t a lot of fresh-cut fir trees in the country, so charamicos are handcrafted out of wood by artisans and decorated with dazzling color and beautiful ornaments. As you travel through the country in the winter, you’ll see them everywhere you go, from front porches to city streets to town squares.
