Thank-A-Thon
A special thanks to CCF volunteers who helped us make 550 phone calls during November in order to thank our donors.
As an organization that relies exclusively on donations, CCF is extremely grateful for the generosity of our supporters and the time of each one of the volunteers.

Andrea, a YMCA team member, and Micheal connect at the Y in the name of cancer support.
|
|
Micheal is an Arizona native and while he has lived there his whole life, he certainly loves to travel the world. After serving in the military and several years of working in the auto industry, Micheal transitioned his career to aviation and is so glad he made that choice. His career has afforded him a lot of opportunities, especially with the travel he enjoys.
Micheal was introduced to the Cholangiocarcinoma Foundation (CCF), but not until after gamots of testing, a diagnosis of cancer of an unknown primary origin, and a trip to the Mayo Clinic. Andrea, A CCF patient volunteer and advocate, had shared her name and phone number on a Mayo connection site. Micheal called her and they set up a time to meet, she was local. The two met and right after one of his doctor appointments and talked for hours. She shared resources with Micheal, talked about genomic profiling, CCF, Facebook support groups and more. They continued to meet every couple of weeks. Soon afterward, Micheal began mentoring other cholangiocarcinoma patients in the CholangioConnect program, and the two created a CCF CARE Team to help educate others - a local team to educate others, offer support, and promote advocacy. Together they participated in a local conference called Aware for All, a free program that educates and empowers the public in making informed decisions about clinical research. There they both offered presentations and shared their patient perspectives. Additionally, they have also participated in the Livestrong campaign and connected with other cancer patients as support.
As a CCF advocate Micheal hopes to share the importance of advocating for oneself. Once informed, he feels patients and families may need to push healthcare teams for things that patients may feel strongly about - like scans every three months, and even surgery. As a mentor he serves to help others cope with the emotions that never go away. He remembers the difficulty of telling family and friends of his diagnosis, and he chooses to volunteer now to be the listening ear when others just need to talk. He remembers how important it was for someone to be there for him, as a mentor and friend, and he wants to help put others at ease and offer the same kind of assistance he received. He shares that his treatment is a journey. He has undergone chemotherapy, surgery, and now a clinical trial after no evidence of the disease for 11 months. He values his medical team and appreciates the options he has been given and reminds others that before option C, remember option A and B may serve one well too. It is an honor and privilege to recognize Micheal Carrel as Volunteer of the Month.
