Heathers: The Musical

Future stars of the stage collaborate with professional Equity actors in Heathers: The Musical, a joint production of TheatreZone and Florida Gulf Coast University’s Bower School of Music.

Heathers, considered an iconic black comedy, offers hilarity as well as a heartfelt look at the serious issues of bullying and teen suicide.

Authors Laurence O’Keefe and Kevin Murphy wrote in the preface to the script:

“We wanted to give our audience a chance to look at the most terrible aspects of human nature, laugh at them, and maybe find inspiration to combat these things with love instead of anger.”

Heathers: The Musical will be presented at the FGCU Theatre Lab

Heathers rehearsal at FGCU. Choreography by TZ's Karen Molnar Danni.

Heathers: The Musical opened off-Broadway in 2014 followed by an engagement in the West End in 2018. The musical is based on the 1989 film of the same name.

The setting is Westerberg High, ruled by the shoulder-padded, scrunchie-wearing Heather, Heather and Heather, the hottest and cruelest girls in all of Ohio (performed by FGCU students Haley Adkins, Karinna Crespo and Maya Senecharles).

Misfit Veronica Sawyer (FGCU student Alexandra Adams) rejects their evil regime for a new boyfriend, the dark and sexy stranger J.D., played by Equity actor Quinn Corcoran, who was a lead actor in TheatreZone’s productions of Rock of Ages and A Little Night Music. J.D. plans to put the Heathers in their place - six feet under.

Mark Danni, founding artistic director of TheatreZone, says he is “thrilled at the spectacular level of talent” of FGCU’s theatre and music students who have been cast in the musical. FGCU’s theatre program offers a Bachelor of Theatre Arts degree. For musical theatre study, the school maintains close collaboration with TheatreZone. Heathers: The Musical is their fifth joint production.

The FGCU students who are acting alongside Equity actors cast by Mark Danni are earning valuable professional workforce experience, a requisite of their degree programs.

FGCU theatre professor Gerritt VanderMeer is a featured actor in Heathers, and has also performed in TheatreZone’s musicals — he played Tully in Escape to Margaritaville and Hertz Klinemann in Rock of Ages.

Go Backstage

Book a Backstage Tour

Get an insider' view of how TheatreZone creates the magic of its shows with a backstage tour. Led by Founding Artistic Director Mark Danni, the tour takes you on the journey of our theatre from the wings offstage to the dressing and costume areas, and to the onstage orchestra "pit." You can bask in the limelight of center stage and vicariously feel a performer's excitement. You may run into a cast member! The tours are held every night after Home for the Holidays, Bonnie & Clyde, Million Dollar Quartet, Little Me, and Carrie -- except for the second Thursday of a show's schedule, which is when we have Talkback Thursdays. Reservations for backstage tours are required and there is a fee of $10 per person.

Meet the Cast

After the final curtain call, audiences at TheatreZone can settle back in their seats for a talkback, an opportunity to meet the show's cast and directors for candid and casual Q&As. Talkback Thursdays are scheduled post-show on the second Thursday of a show's schedule:

Thursday, January 18: Bonnie & Clyde: The Musical

Thursday, February 15: Million Dollar Quartet

Thursday, March 14: Neil Simon's Little Me

Thursday, May 2: Carrie: The Musical

Talkback Thursdays are offered at no additional charge and separate tickets are not required. Audiences can relax after the show and enjoy the talkback with refreshments from our honor bar.
