Your monthly news & updates
In late March, HERO announced a vision board competition for our children. We invited our clientele to create and submit photos of their original boards which depicted one of the following:

1)   What lessons did you learn in 2020?
2)   If you could design your dream life, what would it look like?
3)   What are your favorite activities and hobbies?

Entries were accepted until Friday, April 23rd, and were judged on creativity, the inspirational value of the participants’ messages, and the entertainment factor. Our winning entry, submitted by Hope J., is entitled “My Perfect Dream Life” (see above). Hope was awarded a $100 gift card, and her winning entry is included in this newsletter for your enjoyment. Congratulations to Hope! We look forward to introducing additional contests that allow our children to express themselves in the future.
On April 11th, UGA HEROs hosted a Virtual Magic Show with Dylan George, a member of Team Wu Magic. Both HERO children and UGA HEROs members were able to participate in and enjoy the amazing show. Mr. George demonstrated various card tricks and mind-reading skills, and hypnotized UGA HEROs’ Executive Director, Pierce Pittman. The magician left both UGA HEROs members and the kids in shock! This activity allowed everyone in attendance to experience a fun and engaging afternoon full of magic. Thanks to the UGA HEROs team for providing our children with yet another ‘unforgettable experience.’
Virtual Tutors Needed
H.E.R.O. is openly recruiting volunteer tutors to assist our students in the areas of math, science, social studies, language arts, and reading. We would prefer volunteers who are at least 25 years old, and have prior teaching/tutoring experience. If you are interested, please email our Match and Development Coordinator – Nadia Eliacin – at
Super HERO Mentors Needed
The Super HEROes Mentoring Program is a community-based, one-on-one mentoring program serving children infected with and affected by HIV/AIDS. The program provides these children with the opportunity to have a positive role model through a mentor and to strengthen their life skills, self-esteem, communication skills, goal-setting and academic performance.

Volunteer mentors needed to:
  • Spend one-on-one quality time with a child at least twice a month, a minimum of two hours each time (virtually during the pandemic).
  • Participate with the child in a bi-monthly group activity organized and sponsored by H.E.R.O. for Children (virtually during the pandemic).
  • Be a positive role model for the child.
  • Contribute to strengthening the child's self-esteem, social adjustment and life skills.
