Letter from the President: Trendspotting

Are you looking at the calendar like I am and wondering how we got to nearly the end of January? I look forward to the start of a new year because it means a trip to Florida for the Tropical Plant Indus Jim in Plants try Expo (TPIE) every January. I visit with my colleagues and attend board meetings and presentations that inspire me.

This year, I heard Amsterdam based architect Christine Boland discuss how human beings have become so connected yet disconnected at the same time. We are becoming more and more disconnected from nature as well. We have technology at our fingertips we could not have imagined even 10 years
ago. But Christine pointed out that we don't experience the sense of touch even a fraction as much as we used to. We buy products online. We attend virtual meetings. It's sobering to think about.

I also met with my fellow board members from Green Plants for Green Buildings for a strategic planning session to advance its mission: bringing plants into peoples' lives. It's a mission we work to fulfill every day at Good Earth Plant Company.

I got to give my own presentation as part of a panel on "Hot Trends" discussing the latest innovations in living walls.

Jim Mumford, Good Earth Plant Company, makes a presentation on 2016 Trends at the TPIE meeting.
I return to San Diego from Florida energized and full of ideas to share our clients. I look forward to talking about them with you in the months to come. Be sure you are following our Facebook page and our blog. This is where the good stuff shows up first!

Warm regards,
Jim

Project Spotlight: Airport Authority Living Wall Memorial
The San Diego Airport Authority just opened its brand new two million square foot building which includes a new central Rental Car facility. Good Earth Plant Company contributed consulting work on a potential large scale exterior living wall that would have been visible from across the runway. Instead, we installed a living wall unlike anything we have done before. The 12 foot tall memorial is dedicated to Eduardo "Eddie" Lopez, who suffered a fatal accident during the construction of the project.

You can see Eddie's living wall memorial just inside the building entrance. We hope you enjoy it too.

We received this letter from the Airport Authority thanking us for our work on this project:

Dear Kim, Philippe, Alissa and Jonathan,

"Thank you for all of your hard work on our living wall memorial project. The result is absolutely beautiful, and it truly brings the space to life. The plant palette is even more vibrant and varied than I anticipated - and I know that's a result of your hard work to source the best possible selection of plants. I am proud to be able to share this with Eddie's family as a fitting tribute to his life.

It has been an absolute pleasure working with Good Earth Living Architecture, and I hope we'll have the opportunity to collaborate again in the future."

"Thank you all again."

Hilton Gaslamp Living Wall Project

This beautiful project for the Chef's Table at the new Hilton Bayfront is 32 square feet, and planted with seven different types of ferns. If you are lucky enough to be invited to join Chef Jonathan in his private office, enjoy the view! And remember the crew at Good Earth Plants is responsible.
