Help Us Continue Our Mission & Meet Our Goal
Downtown Shenandoah, Inc. is a 501 (c)3 nonprofit organization that is dedicated to revitalizing Shenandoah and the surrounding communities. Our vision is to return downtown Shenandoah to an active pedestrian-oriented business district that will promote and sustain further economic, cultural, and civic growth within the Borough of Shenandoah.

DSI Is Committed To Your Community

DSI is one of only 28 Pennsylvania downtowns statewide earning national Accreditation status, the top tier of recognition by Main Street America™. According to the Pennsylvania Downtown Center, "this exclusive designation signifies a demonstrated commitment to comprehensive community revitalization and a proven track record of successfully applying the Main Street Approach." DSI, our board of directors, volunteers and donors are committed to your community.

DSI Works With You & For You To Create a Bright Future

DSI spearheads a variety of programs to enhance the downtown district while maintaining the historical look and feel of the area. Most recently, DSI was awarded a $100,000 grant for facade improvements. The grant will assist approved local businesses with financial assistance to improve their storefronts. This adds to previous facade improvement programs that provided assistance to local businesses like Kowalonek's Kielbasy Shop, Nature's Way Emporium, and Francesco's Restaurant, all located on Main Street.

DSI Hosts Fun Outdoor Festivals That Shines The Light on Our Community

DSI hosts three significant outdoor annual events that are instrumental in the fundraising efforts necessary to keep our mission moving forward. These events generate thousands of visitors to Shenandoah. Kielbasi Festival, Heritage Day, and Pierogi/Kielbasi Golf Outing celebrate the ethnic food, heritage, and history of this community while shining the light on our unique community. We also host the annual Coal Cracker Christmas that is our way of thanking the community for their support.

CEBA Is For You, Your Family, Friends And Neighbors

To move our community forward into a better, more successful future, DSI is collaborating with multiple partners and community leaders to construct The Center For Education, Business & Arts (CEBA). CEBA is a community center for you! It will include a commercial kitchen, event center with catering kitchen, Penn State classroom, DSI offices, co-working spaces, and more. CEBA will be located on Main Street in Shenandoah and will serve the entire area. CEBA is for you, your family, friends, and neighbors to learn new skills, host events and so much more.

Business Spotlight: Oravitz Home For Funerals
Pictured are Brad and Steve Oravitz, owners of Oravitz Home For Funerals. "We guide families through the many decisions that must be made during a very emotional and challenging time."
When you need compassionate, experienced professionals to help you navigate the loss of a loved one, The Oravitz Home For Funerals is here for you. This fourth-generation family-owned business has served the community since 1910 and continues a tradition of caring for families during the most difficult times of their lives.

Steve and Brad Oravitz are a father and son team who are committed to providing dignified caring tributes to their client’s loved ones. “We guide families through the many decisions that must be made during this emotional and challenging time,” said Brad Oravitz. He explained they offer a range of personalized services to meet the family's wishes. “Our customers are our top priority. Dad and I are available 24/7 to personally answer phone calls, even after leaving the office. We don’t use an answering service because we want to be available when a family needs us,” he added.

The Oravitz Home For Funerals is one of the oldest businesses in Shenandoah and has an interesting history. “The business started with my great grandmother, Jennie, Brad explained. “She was one of the first women licensed funeral directors in Pennsylvania.” He continued to share that throughout history, funerals were traditionally held right inside the family homes of those who passed away. “In the 1950s when the business moved to its current location at 40 N. Jardin Street, my grandfather Ollie, designed the building to resemble a home to make customers feel at ease and more comfortable. Our name, The Oravitz Home For Funerals reflects this.” Brad explained that his father, Steve, (third generation), took over the business when Ollie passed away in 1996. After graduating from mortuary school, Brad (fourth generation), joined his father full time in 2005.

The Oravitzs are actively involved in their community and believe in giving back. They both are long-time members of the Rotary, volunteer for a variety of fundraisers, and are always available to help when needed. Brad serves on the Downtown Shenandoah Board of Directors and is a member of the Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce. Local business leaders and colleagues appreciate their time and community contributions.

“Although I haven’t known Brad for very long, I could quickly tell he is exactly the type of man you want on your team,” expressed Dr. Sasha Sherry, owner of Sherry Dental. His dedication to the community through acts of service is remarkable. Brad has a heart of gold and he continues to find ways to improve the area and encourage those around him,” she added.

Mary Luscavage, a longtime Shenandoah resident and DSI board member agrees. “The Oravitz family is an active and important part of the community, not only helping families in their time of grief with professional and friendly assistance but also supporting all organizations in Shenandoah.”

When we asked Brad how he envisions the future and to share some challenges he would like the Shenandoah community to overcome, his reply was optimistic. “Shenandoah is my town. I see a positive future and encourage others to do the same. We can work together today to change our community into something even better than it once was,” he said. “Good people generate good people,” he added.
Pictured are Brad Oravitz and Dr. Sasha Sherry during the 2021 9th Annual Kielbasi/Pierogie Golf Tournament at Mountain Valley Golf Club. Both serve on the DSI Board of Directors, are members of the Shenandoah Chamber of Commerce and volunteer for a variety of community organizations.
