Dr. Patrick Moore Selected as 2020 Keynote Speaker
2020 Oregon Logging Conference (OLC) President Greg Stratton has announced that Dr. Patrick Moore will be the keynote speaker at the 82 nd Annual gathering in Eugene in February.

“I have always wanted to understand the ‘other side’ and Patrick has been on the other side,” Stratton said. “He is knowledgeable in the facts and real science of our environment,” Stratton continued, “unlike much of the current ‘best available’ information which is more often than not, politically or agenda driven.”

According to his biography, Dr. Patrick Moore is an informed and provocative speaker who inspires new ways of thinking about environmental challenges. His views are refreshing, informative, and relevant. He is focused on the promotion of sustainability and consensus building among competing concerns. He calls for issues to be discussed on the basis of accurate scientific data, and the creation of sustainable solutions.

Dr. Patrick Moore is a founding member, former president, and international director for Greenpeace.

OLC President Stratton said, “While Mr. Moore may not always tell you what you want to hear, I have found him to be honest and truthful. I believe politics are based on opinions and agendas,” Stratton continued, “but science should be proven and validated with facts.”

Stratton believes that management of the environment should be based on what’s best for the landscape and long-term viability, not short-sighted agendas that destroy entire communities. “I believe Patrick Moore shares this same belief.” Stratton said.

Keynote speakers Dr. Patrick Moore will talk during the OLC opening session breakfast on Thursday, February 20, 2020 at approximately 9:30 a.m. in the Wheeler Pavilion at the Lane Events Center and Fairgrounds in Eugene, OR.

OLC Foundation Fundraiser for the
Scholarships Program a HUGE Success!
by Natalie Foglio
The first ever “Oregon Logging Conference Foundation Clay Target Tournament” fundraising event was held at Creswell Clay Target Sports on September 6th. The idea for this event came from Jeanne Shuttleworth, a member of the Logging Conference Board and a former college scholarship recipient herself. “I decided to do this as a way to contribute as a board member but also because I received a scholarship in college at a time when I really needed it,” Jeanne stated. “I will always be grateful for that help and this was a way for me to pay that forward.”

About fifteen volunteers came together to make this fundraiser happen, and special thanks should be given to Rikki Wellman for her hard work and planning. And to volunteers, Anitra Franco, Michelle Dudley, Gabby Pelayo, Martie Munsell, for their help during the event and to Kevin Merritt and Dave Wellman for doing much of the heavy lifting required for the setup of the tournament. Erin Pelayo from Chapala Mexican Restaurants donated lunch to the entire group, allowing for any money that would have been paid toward catering to go directly to the scholarship fund.

Each participant started off the event by signing in at registration, and then deciding on any additional purchases which would not only be contributing to the scholarship fund, but would also help them out on the field. Options included: a practice round of shooting before the tournament, mulligan tickets (Once redeemed, a mulligan allows an unfavorable round of target shooting to be attempted a second time), raffle tickets for the drawing held after the tournament, or a premium package which included one practice round, ten mulligans, and forty raffle tickets.

Following lunch, seventy-five participants divided into fifteen teams and headed to the shooting range. Points were earned based on the number of clay pigeons each participant shot throughout the tournament, and at the end of the day the highest scoring individual and team received awards based on their score. The winning team at the end of the day was Ocean Terminals.
All funds raised by the OLC Scholarship Foundation are given out in the same year. This money benefits college students working toward two- and four-year degrees, as well as trade school students. The Oregon Logging Conference has given out over $900,000 in scholarships to date, and that number will only continue to grow. The proceeds from the OLCF Clay Target Tournament netted $24,000; the original goal was between $10,000 and $15,000. It is an incredible thing that so many people in one industry can come together and make a difference in the lives of the youth through which that industry will continue to grow.

Thank you to all of the companies who sponsored events and donated money to the scholarship fund; Title sponsors; Bell Lumber & Pole, Pay It Forward, Beverage sponsors; Bob & Carolyn Magathan, Stuntzner Engineering & Forestry LLC, Lunch sponsor; Chapala Mexican Restaurant, Awards Sponsors; Siuslaw Sporting Clays, Ocean Terminals Co., Dr. Abel, Scholarship sponsors; Hap & Lory Huffman, Boise Cascade, Starker Forests, Inc., Station sponsors; Bearhaven, Cascade Timber Consulting, Inc., Giustina Resources, Kriege Logging LLC, McGee Engineering Inc., Merrill & Ring, Modern Machinery, 82 nd Oregon Logging Conference, Dave Wellman. And to the many people and companies who donated items for the auction and raffle.

Thank you to everyone else who made this fundraiser possible- you are making the logging industry great, and having a great time in the process.

Save The Date for our 2nd Annual Clay Target Tournament Fundraiser for Scholarships, September 5th, 2020. Event will be held at Creswell Clay Target Club. For more information call 541.686.9191 or email jeannes@giustina.com or rikki@oregonloggingconference.com

In With The New: Graduate Eugene
The host hotel for the Oregon Logging Conference has a new name: the Graduate Eugene. Formerly known as the Hilton Eugene, when you drive up to the front of the hotel, the changes can be seen. The outside of the hotel has been painted and the entrance has been renovated. The changeover began in March of this year.

Upon arrival, you’ll be welcomed at the front desk, which also doubles as a shoe display case for the Eugene-founded Nike business shoe collection. In the lobby you’ll see vintage sports posters, pops of color and warm textures that blend to create a 1970s inspired atmosphere. There is also a 34-person communal table in the lobby.

The guest rooms feature design elements that celebrate Oregon’s lush landscapes and Pacific Northwest heritage. On the walls hangs original art pieces including those from the movie classic Animal House, which was filmed in Eugene.

There are several on-site dining options at the Graduate Eugene. In the lobby is a laid-back eatery called The Fir, which also includes an outdoor beer garden with communal tables and a private dining room known as The Pit. The lobby café Poindexter serves hot breakfast food, salads, coffee, smoothies, pressed juices and more.

Adjacent to the cafe is the Topgolf Swing Suite, which features simulator bays and a variety of virtual games including the popular Topgolf target game, hockey shots, and baseball pitching. This venue also includes comfortable lounge seating, HDTVs, and food and beverage service.

As the headquarters for the Oregon Logging Conference, the Graduate Eugene and staff look forward to welcoming all who attend the 2020 gathering in February. Visit www.graduateeugene.com
