CAMBA's Dance Teams Leave Their Mark

Victory is so sweet, especially to our senior dance team, “Left our Mark,” who showed incredible determination and drive throughout the year, landing them First Place at the DYCD Step It Up Competition. The teams, from CAMBA's community center at I.S. 271 in Bed-Stuy, danced off at the famed Apollo Theater in June and used their dance routines to act as a social justice platform; CAMBA's teams, including the night's winner, chose racial profiling as their cause. The winning team made a moving and eloquent visual statement about police brutality. We are so proud to see these young people develop their skills both as individuals and as a collaborative team.

Robyn Stovall, director of the dance program, said that this work is important “because students can focus their talents to do something that is going to change the climate of their community.” Additionally, being a part of a team gives the students a “sense of belonging,” which is important for any young person trying to find their way. Stovall stated that she hopes the students gain “a sense of self awareness and self-confidence and can open their eyes to worldly issues outside of their own communities and households.” She also stated that the dance team's focus on current issues pushes the students to “become aware of the issues plaguing the world,” thus allowing them to arrive at a new, perhaps more hopeful perspective.
