CAMBA's Got a Brand New Blog
Now introducing our brand new blog, CAMBA Voice! This fun and informative site will offer readers a look back at our agency's 40-year history of providing life-changing services to low-income New Yorkers. On CAMBA Voice, we'll also be looking forward at our 2020 Vision: Ladders to SuccessConstruct Stable Foundations and Protect Against Homelessness. Stories on CAMBA Voice will showcase programs that exemplify these three pieces of the 2020 Vision.

We'll be updating the site weekly with fresh content, so hop online today and read about some of these programs!
Celebrating the Accomplishments of African Americans
Atlantic House Men's Shelter clients at a Black History Month Celebration
Last week, we held a joyous celebration of African American History Month at our Atlantic House Men's Shelter. Clients and staff gathered together, enjoyed a meal and listened to inspirational poetry, music and speeches commemorating the important contributions of African Americans.
CAMBA staff member, Nakeysha McRae, read a poem at the celebration.
We also celebrated the accomplishments of our CAMBA East New York Beacon, which recently introduced a fantastic new class in fencing to its after-school programs. You can read more about the fencing program on our new blog, CAMBA Voice.
Building Financial Security Through Partnerships
New Yorkers confronting the prospect of eviction often need help beyond their immediate housing. CAMBA's HomeBase homelessness prevention program has teamed up with our Workforce Development program with an initiative called Forward Focus which will provide clients with personalized career planning and coaching, job preparation and financial security services.

CAMBA's Forward Focus team will receive training in financial capability education through  WorkBoost, a new partnership with the Financial Clinic, JPMorgan Chase and New York City workforce development providers like CAMBA. Thanks to technical assistance and access to Change Machine , our staff will be better able to help clients reduce debt, improve their credit and save for the future. We are eager to put these new initiatives into play in the coming year and we're grateful to our partners for recognizing the importance of reducing homelessness through career development and financial literacy.
CAMBA Families Read Together
Group leader, Akema Kelly, leads students and parents in a reading exercise.
Students whose parents read to them regularly  show higher reading comprehension levels, which in turn boosts their capacity to excel in school . CAMBA's Ready Readers program cultivates a love for literacy through events like Family Reading Night, where children and parents come together to celebrate over books. On March 2 at CAMBA Elite P.S. 3,  Bweela Steptoe, the daughter of award-winning children's book author and illustrator, John Steptoe, visited the Bed-Stuy school to talk about her father's work.

The students and parents were captivated by Ms. Steptoe's descriptions of her father's efforts to write children's books that reflected his world and the world of people of color, despite the fact that at first these stories were not sought after by his publisher. Ms. Steptoe encouraged students to have persistence in finding a path that is meaningful to them.

After her presentation, students had dinner with their parents and then broke into small groups doing what they love to do: read together.
