Baseball was very, very good to CAMBA on its annual Night at the Ballpark on June 26th. The end result was a victory for the Cyclones and success for CAMBA. Leading off and starting for CAMBA was CEO & President Joanne Oplustil, who received the Cyclones “Winning Woman” award for the night for her contributions in leading CAMBA from when it was a small, local merchants association ($50,000 annual budget) to the impactful, multi-service organization that it is today ($163 million budget with 2,000 employees serving 45,000 people citywide).

The excitement continued when Joanne threw out the first pitch of the game, and later announced the Cyclones batting order in the 7th inning. Game-goers also learned about CAMBA’s many programs and projects by winning swag from BIVO and HomeBase through CAMBA’s prize wheel. Attendees could stop by the You Can Van parked outside the stadium to learn more about HomeBase. The night ended with a walk-off win by the Cyclones over the Lowell Spinners in the 9th inning, and CAMBA raising thousands of dollars for the upcoming year. There are more photos from the evening on our Facebook page .

Spotlight on Kareem Youngblood
Kareem Youngblood‘s commitment to making a difference in the lives of Brooklyn’s at-risk youth is summed up in a quote presented in a recent magazine article: “I want to connect and get through to [the students], and that’s what I take most pride in.” As the Prevention Supervisor of CAMBA’s Young Men’s Health Project (YMHP), Kareem was recently featured in Amida Care’s PRIDE Magazine’s LGBTQIA Innovators for Change spread (on page 22) . He has a rather unlikely second job: Kareem also performs as a stand-up comedian.
Pride Month Kudos from the Brooklyn D.A.
Project ALY's Elise Koffler and Roslyn Campbell with DA Eric Gonzalez
Brooklyn District Attorney Eric Gonzalez gave a special award to CAMBA’s Project ALY during the DA’s Pride Month ceremony on June 20. Project ALY received the Community Award for the work it does to promote acceptance from parents and family members of LGBTQ youth. Project ALY’s strategy has contributed to decreasing the risk of future health or mental health problems in this at-risk population. CAMBA thanks Eric Gonzalez for this wonderful honor.

Earlier in June, CAMBA staff and friends took part in Brooklyn Pride month on board CAMBA's float on June 9 in Park Slope. Many also joined Public Advocate Leticia James for the Manhattan Pride Parade on June 24th.
