The IEEE EMBS solicits names for candidates for positions on its Administrative Committee (AdCom) for terms of three years. The AdCom is the administrative and governance body of the IEEE EMB Society. It is required to meet two times each year.

Recent changes in the EMBS Bylaws have redefined the categories of AdCom Members: 5 members now represent geographic areas of interest / priority, 5 representatives whose strength lies in key technical areas of EMBS, and 5 members who are active practitioners in the field of biomedical engineering (e.g. clinicians, health policy, medical industry). In addition, 1 student and 1 young professional shall also be sought.

At this time we seek nominations for a total of nine positions that will serve for the terms listed below, beginning 1 January 2019.

Administrative Committee
  • Geographic: one representative of North America (3 year term)
  • Geographic: one representative of Europe (3 year term)
  • Technical: two representatives (3 year terms)
  • Practitioner: one representative (3 year term)
  • Student: one representative (2 year term)

Nominations of others and self-nominations are permitted. Please submit names, a short biosketch (250 words), a position statement (250 words) and a color picture (headshot) in jpeg format. Life Sciences Conference
The 2nd IEEE Life Sciences Conference (LSC) will be held in Montreal, Canada 28-30 October 2018. The IEEE Life Sciences Technical Community (LSTC), which is supported by multiple IEEE member societies, is the sponsor of the conference. As such, the conference will cover diverse topics within the theme.

EMBS Portugal is very pleased to support and recommends the 6th edition of Visum 2018 Summer School.

=== Call for Participation ===

The sixth edition of the Vision Understanding and Machine Intelligence (VISUM) Summer School will take place between
5 and 13, July 2018, in Porto - Portugal.

This year the following topics will be covered:
1. Computer Vision and Machine Learning
2. Affective Computing
3. Deep Learning
4. Statistical Shape Modelling
5. Human Behaviour Analysis
6. Brain Image Analysis

World-renowned experts in the fields will deliver the courses, and the material covered will guide you in building your own AI system as a curricular project.
Aside from the theoretical relevance of the topics covered, and the experience of building a practical AI application, the school aims to provide a stimulating opportunity for students, young researchers and professionals with interests in Computer Vision and Machine Learning.
The participants will benefit from direct interaction with representatives from the most relevant industries in the field, as well as top academics.
MNMC 2018
Biomedical grand challenges facing our society can be addressed at the scale of biology with Micro and Nanoscale technologies. These technologies hold great potential for diagnostics, therapeutics, enhancement of physiological function, disease management, or early monitoring and prevention. IEEE EMBS is sponsoring the fourth biennial Conference on Micro and Nanotechnology in Medicine to foster interaction between scientists, engineers, entrepreneurs and medical researchers in the context of real-world medical needs and issues. The Conference will promote vigorous and open dialogue towards groundbreaking solutions to previously unaddressed problems and cutting edge technologies for faster, more quantitative, and less expensive biomedical solutions using advances in Micro and Nanotechnology.

Technology You Can Swallow
Moving beyond wearable sensors, researchers are creating ingestible ones
Wearable devices have become ubiquitous around the world, constantly gathering personal health data such as perspiration, heartbeats, movements, acceleration, footsteps, blood pressure, sleep, and an increasing number of externally detectible bodily processes. Cisco Systems reported that, last year, 325 million wearable devices were connected worldwide, a number predicted to more than double by 2019. But their popularity has left some wondering if this sort of technology could be taken beyond the surface of the skin to places deep within our bodies-not wearable sensors but ingestible ones. Heeding the call, materials scientists have created a new class of edible electronics, including functional devices that can take and communicate multiple measurements from within the body-a sort of swallowable.
