Our Teaching Kitchen is Opening Soon!

The Teaching Kitchen here at the Clubhouse will soon be opening! With our newest staff member, Chef Christopher (pictured above), members are getting the opportunity to create, cook, and serve restaurant quality dishes in a full size professional kitchen every day!

The concept of a Teaching Kitchen is still relatively new, but the research that has been done on the effect they can have on a community have been very promising, and very positive. The communal populations who have had the opportunity to utilize a Teaching Kitchen have shown improvements in their health and diet unmatched by virtually any traditional community food-based health programs.

One study consisting of 40 participants in a 15 week communal Teaching Kitchen program showed substantial, clinically significant improvements in health outcomes for the participants. They lost over six pounds of weight on average, had an average waist circumference reduction of 2.2 inches, had drops in both their systolic and diastolic blood pressure of -7.7 mm Hg and -6.3 mm Hg respectively, and additionally, they showed an average total cholesterol reduction of 7.5 ml/dL.

These early results are promising, but more than that, they are exciting! Teaching Kitchens, with their focus on community health, and community health outcomes represents a new and wonderful path to improving the lives of those who most need such assistance, and Foot Print to Success Clubhouse is more than thrilled to be at the forefront of these community focused health practices. We cannot wait to see what wonderful changes this endeavor can bring to the health of our entire Clubhouse community!

Stay tuned to our social media for details about our Grand Opening celebration!

Wellness Recovery Action Plan - W.R.A.P.

Recently, some of our staff and members made the trip to attend the Wellness Recovery Actin Plan or W.R.A.P. training. It is a process which supports you to identify the tools that keep you well and create action plans to put them into practice in your everyday life. All along the way, WRAP helps you incorporate key recovery concepts and wellness tools into your plans and your life.

We asked two of our attendees about their experiences there. Here is what they had to say:

Hi,

I just recently did  a Wellness Recovery Action

Plan (WRAP) training that was truly life changing for me. For those unfamiliar

with it, WRAP is a system designed to help individuals manage their well-being

and stay on track with their life goals."

The training helped me personalize my own wellness toolbox by

creating a plan for my triggers, early warning signs, and more. The WRAP

training was highly informative, and I know that I will be using it for my

well-being and hopefully help others with theirs.

Hello, how are you doing? I hope you are having a wonderful day. I am going to share my experience in the WRAP (Wellness Recovery Action Plan) training. During the two days I was there, it changed my perspective on how I look at things. It is a way for others to gauge their recovery stage. I was surprised to learn that a peer came up with the concept from her own experiences as a consumer—similar to how the Clubhouse was founded out of a desire to defeat stigma and change how people view mental health.

I really enjoyed learning about WRAP because it gave me practical tools to take better care of myself and recognize early warning signs before things get overwhelming. It also helped me build a plan that keeps me focused on wellness and reminded me that recovery is possible.

Member Spotlight

See what our wonderful members have recently accomplished!

Congratulations Veronica & Malcolm!

Congratulations to two incredible people and wonderful Clubhouse members Veronica and Malcolm (pictured left)! They recently completed training sessions here at our Clubhouse. These training sessions help our members vocationally, and our support around these trainings helps them personally. It is amazing to see how the simple act of acknowledging someone’s hard work and time can change everything. Whether an increase their confidence in their own abilities or a willingness to use those abilities, or both, to accomplish things!

Our Clubhouse Cybersecurity Course is underway!

In our modern world, using a computer is necessary at some point during the course of almost every job available, but the knowledge of how to use computers and use them safely is not nearly as ubiquitous. As technologies like artificial intelligence exponentially advance around us, it has become clear that using a computer will remain essential, even for most entry level jobs. Given that fact, our Clubhouse decided to launch a free course in basic cybersecurity.

Open to all of our members, and the residents of Southwest Hammocks! We are now around week 3 into the course and the reaction of our members has

been wonderful! Staff members Marie and Bill have been able to keep the attendees engaged with interesting examples, concepts, and group activities. The members do have fun, but not at the cost of learning the material and this seems to be a result of the material itself being interesting. This is great to see, and we cannot wait until our members get a chance to put this new knowledge into action!

Member Testimonies

I have been hospitalized eight times for schizophrenia, and have been to five mental health treatment programs. My case manager at Summit told me about the Foot Print to Success Clubhouse, which I joined last year. The staff are welcoming, and you really feel like you belong there. The members help each other complete various tasks throughout the day, and I volunteer for janitorial duties. The Clubhouse is helping me improve through adult education programs. I am grateful to be a part of the Clubhouse community, and I learn something new every day I attend.

My name is Johnathan, and I’m a proud member of Foot Print to Success Clubhouse. I became involved quite recently, after searching the internet. Within a week of starting I felt I could be my honest, idiosyncratic self in this environment. As members and even the staff, we love being here together. NO one is spoken down to, or neglected, each member is an equal piece of one unit, despite our differences, cultural, physical, intellectual or otherwise.
