Our Partners Are Making A Difference

At Nantahala Health Foundation, a 501c3 public charity, we believe community organizations represent our best chance of substantially reducing barriers to health and wellness for the residents of North Carolina’s six westernmost counties and the Qualla Boundary.

Acting on that belief, we support and collaborate with local organizations focused on the key social drivers of health so that together we are doing our part to increase opportunities for everyone to live healthy, productive lives.
To date, we have invested more than $3.13 million in health and wellness initiatives in our service area.
To date, we have funded more than 145 projects designed to increase access to health for those who need it most.
Our next grantmaking cycle, which launches today, begins another opportunity for local nonprofits to propose innovative solutions to removing barriers to health and wellness in Western North Carolina. We conservatively estimate our next round of strategic investments will provide funding for an additional 25+ new initiatives benefiting thousands of individuals.
Partners Making Progress:
Southwestern Commission
Nantahala Health Foundation was privileged to have partnered with Southwestern Commission through one of our recent Collaborate Health Innovation Program grants. These funds were utilized during the 2021 calendar year to fill a funding gap required to launch the Southwestern North Carolina Housing Consortium.

We recognized the potential for tremendous benefits to be realized by supporting Southwestern Commission's proposal because access to stable, safe, affordable housing is vital to protecting long-term health.
Program Progress and Impact: "We are leveraging $600,000 annually into the region for affordable housing. The first HUD allocation ($550,000) was received in fall 2021, after review and acceptance of the regional housing plan. Additionally, the American Rescue Plan allocated extra funds to HOME consortiums, from which we are scheduled to receive $1.9 million." — Southwestern Commission

About Our CHIP Recipients: Eleven organizations were awarded 2020 Collaborative Health Innovation Project grants with project implementation from January to December 2021. These grants, which totaled $414,227 and covered all six counties and the Qualla Boundary, were targeted to support collaborative projects aimed at addressing the needs of under-served and under-resourced populations. At the time of these awards, our funding was anticipated to support all or a portion of an estimated $813,635 in total project costs.
