Georgeville Store, Missouri
Georgia Adams bought a unique piece of property--the Georgeville Store established in 1867--and turned it into a rug hooking shop and fiber-art studio. The building has been a post office, a feed store, a dry goods store, and a residence for a constable. Now it’s where rug hookers can find wool, frames, tools, Beeline cutters, patterns, and more. Georgia offers open hooking on Wednesdays and Saturdays. For June of 2020, she's planning a hook in retreat at Chillicothe, Missouri, on June 11-14. She loves traveling to vend, meeting rug hookers, and helping to plan their rugs!
Georgia will give one of our educational talks, helping us find balance when hooking our rugs.

Hooktiques, Missouri
A few years ago, a friend asked if I would be interested in having a booth at her Hook In. We had recently closed our antique mall booth and sold all remaining inventory. So it required some thought and spousal compromise, but I had really missed “the hunt.” I decided to look for small things that we rug hookers could use in some way. So began “Hooktiques.”
I offer small footstools, metal and wooden boxes and unusual ways to store hooks and other tools of our art. It continues to be a fun challenge, as I find myself asking “How can we use this?”
The most memorable part of my rug hooking journey is the people I’ve met and the ongoing friendships that have been established, many from the Nebraska Fall Hook In.

WE MISSED CARRIE!
SHE'S BACK THIS YEAR!
One Rug Two Rugs, Louisiana
Carrie Martin comes to us all the way from her home in Covington, Louisiana, and she brings many temptations and a wonderful sense of humor! We include some of our favorites among her rugs below. Her booth will be filled with delicious wool. Don't miss out on her special color, Martin Magic!
"Catching the rug bug is easy," Carrie wrote, "but once caught, it is difficult to cure!" Carrie can help you build your stash in many colors and textures, but she warns that you may find "yardage and scraps bursting out of drawers, closets, and even sometimes stored in unused showers!" She loves the community that forms wherever rug hooking happens. She advises all of us to "be inspired by what you can create!"
After the Hook In, Carrie will offer a three-day workshop at Comfort Inn, sponsored by Midwest Rug Hookers. The class is currently full, but you can check with Karla Egger to see about the waiting list:

Paisley Pansie, Iowa
Paisley Pansie is a full service custom frame shop owned by Gail Karlen and located in Lake City, Iowa. Gail and her husband owned and operated Leonardo's Art and Prints in Omaha (a Nationally recognized Art Gallery and Custom Framing Studio) for 25 years before moving to Lake City in 2016 where Gail then opened Paisley Pansie.
While in Omaha, Leonardo's boasted over 6,000 frame styles to choose from. Paisley Pansie now carries roughly a third of that selection. While the selection is smaller, it is still massive, offering choices for any décor be it rustic, contemporary, traditional or eclectic.
Paisley Pansie specializes in framing hooked rugs, textiles and shadowboxes. The Spring 2019 cover of The Rug Hooking Magazine featured a rug by Janice Lee of Black Horse Antiques, and her rug bears a beautiful frame designed by Gail.
Paisley Pansie offers mobile framing to groups and individuals. Making regular visits to The Rug Hooking Store at Black Horse Antiques, and weekly visits to Omaha, Paisley Pansie brings several cases of frame choices for your consideration. Your framed project will even be delivered to your door upon completion.

Consider Paisley Pansie for your framing needs where quality, experience, selection and personal care are given to showcase the time and love you've spent on your project.

Pretties and Primitives, Nebraska
We are Dixon and Karen Greenfield, also known as
Pretties and Primitives
. My little “craft business” got started while we lived in Germany. It sure has changed over the years. Dixon joined me some years back. He is the brains behind the wonderful wood pieces we use. We can hardly believe that we have passed our 30-year mark.
BELOW: While Dixon takes care of the wooden primitive pieces, repairing, restoring, and refinishing them, Karen is the wool applique wizard who decorates each item in her own charming style!
Since we use one of a kind vintage wood pieces, we never know where they will take us nor what we will have.. this makes it all a lot of fun for us. We think of our pieces as Heirlooms of Tomorrow.
We have included a few examples of our work, and we hope you enjoy them. You can find Pretties and Primitives on facebook, or contact us at

NEW THIS YEAR:
Rock-a-Billy Ranch, Nebraska
Rock-a-Billy Ranch is a "Fiber Farm" where all of our animals are raised for their fiber and for pets. I shear most of the animals myself, and process the fiber here on the ranch - washing/dying/rovings/batts and spinning yarns - all of which I use in my own style of rug hooking and needle felting.
ABOVE and RIGHT: Victoria employs various techniques and her own wonderful fibers in her rugs!
Our animals consist of Miniature Highland Cattle, Globally Endangered Leicester Long Wool Sheep, Leisterland Sheep, Shetland Sheep and Nigora Goats at this time. However, I have an abundance of fiber left from my alpacas and angora goats whom we have since moved from the ranch.
In addition, I like to sponsor and mentor 4H kids in raising animals for fiber purposes, and will purchase exotic fibers from them.
BELOW: For this piece, Victoria won multiple ribbons at her county fair.
At the Nebraska Fall Hook In, I will offer my hand-spun yarns and roving as well as hand-made items for sale.
Victoria Green
Rock-a-Billy Ranch
Garland, NE
402-499-2170
p.s. Every Summer, we have livestock for sale as well, if anyone is seeking to add in their own little fiber producers and the cutest all-terrain lawn mowers you will ever own!
This concludes our 2019 Vendor Spotlights of the Nebraska Fall Hook In.
We hope you'll join us, visit all of these beautiful booths, and treat yourself to something wonderful!

Sauder Village People's Choice Award Winner:
Semper Fidelis ~ Donna Hrkman
"Why a Two-Cut?"
"Why a Two-Cut? Are you nuts? That's what I heard," Donna said, "when I shared the progress on my latest rug, Semper Fidelis, Always Faithful. I have been hooking rugs in primarily a #3 cut for years and enjoy the control and detail I can achieve with it. But there were a few factors that made me choose to hook the Semper Fi rug strictly in a #2 cut.
"While I was at the Sauder Village show last year, I bought a new, finer linen backing from Dorr Wools. I had wondered about hooking a rug in a smaller cut and this seemed like a good excuse to try that. So, armed with a great photo of a Marine and his bomb dog, I set out to give tiny strips a try.
"So I gathered up the overdyed Dorr white wool and started cutting strips with the #2. I knew it would feel different, but I was keeping an open mind and looking forward to the new challenge. I have always used a Miller hook with the medium tip and didn't expect to have any problems.
"Right away I realized that the linen was very tight. Instead of breezing along through the larger holes of my usual bleached primitive linen, I had to punch deep holes into the tighter weave with every loop. And drawing those fragile strips through those small holes was another challenge, as many of them simply disintegrated in my hand. I knew that it was going to be a slower process and one that would result in some unusable wool strips.
"I hooked the soldier first, concentrating on creating the folds and shadows, creases and details of his uniform and his gear. I had never known how much gear our soldiers wear on duty, and respect them even more for what they do. There were pockets, flaps, pouches, and packs that all required attention to detail for accuracy. It was a tough challenge.
"Next came the dog. I've had students tell me that they would like to hook their own black dog, but thought it would be too difficult because black is black and hard to shade. Really, though, when you look at a black dog, there are many values and colors reflected in their coat, and you just have to identify them. Hooking the dog was still a complicated process, but she went fairly quickly.
"I hooked the Semper Fidelis lettering as the beginning of the background, working my way across the wall to the left, surrounding the soldier, working down behind him, varying the shades and values to create a believable backdrop for the two main characters, I worked underneath the soldier, adding rocks and cracks and then under the dog and back up to the wording on the right side.
"I had drawn a traditional border at first, but decided it was just going to add more space and a lot more little loops. It occurred to me that I could draw the edge in the shape of a dog tag, adding to the theme and allowing me to end the design in a more meaningful way. So I drew the edges and hole and whipped the finished piece with a gray yarn that has a metallic sheen. I finished just a week before Sauder's event.
"I'm glad I did it. I want every new rug that I hook to be a challenge, something I haven't done before. I never want to get stale or complacent in my work and this was definitely a big challenge. Now that I've done it and accomplished my vision, I believe I don't need to hook another rug all in a #2 cut. While I did achieve a lot of detail and fine edges, I can't spend so much time on a rug with the busy schedule I keep. And the amount of wool lost to breaking and shredding was not something I could regain.
"I say that if you want a rug hooking experience that will make you work harder and more carefully, try a rug in a #2 cut. Been there, done that, don't have to do it again!"

Glorious Galchutt Adaptations
There’s a new name on the rug-hooking scene: David Galchutt. “A native southern Californian, David Galchutt has been working as an illustrator for 30+ years,” according to his biographical statement at his website. “Though he had done some advertising illustration in his early years, the primary focus of his illustrating career has been in the children's industry, working for both toy companies and in publishing.” Two of the rugs in this year's edition of Celebration, including the cover rug, were Galchutt adaptations.

BELOW: Lyle Drier's Galchutt adaptation

Galchutt’s intricate rug-hooking patterns can be found online and at Janice Lee’s Rug Hooking Store in Valley, Nebraska, where Pris Buttler has taught master classes on the works of various artists including Jan Theodoor Toorop, John Nieto, and now David Galchutt.

MRH Summer Meeting and All-Day Hooking
A good time was had by all at the July 13th MRH Chapter Meeting, due to the hospitality of our wonderful hostess, Judy Roth at Gatherings on the Blue!
For the wonderful wool, the camaraderie, the nice lunch, and the warm welcome, we thank Judy for hosting our chapter meeting in the summer for a change. In the future, we will likely return to Gatherings for our Spring Meetings!

Hooking at Altitude:
Favorite Photos from the ATHA Biennial in Denver
August 28-31, 2019
The Biennial ended two days ago, just in time to include some of our favorite photos here--beautiful rugs and lots of fun in Denver.
ABOVE: Karla and Pat stood near this rug to show its incredible size! Designed and hooked by Maynard Tischler.
CLOCKWISE FROM TOP LEFT: Dennie and Holly with Gail Dufresne in her booth; Pat and Dennie in the fun rocking chairs outside the Denver Art Museum; Kristy, Terri, and Jodi, with Anita White at the Silent Auction
LEFT: Chilling at a Denver pub
ABOVE: Most of us saw Cheryl Bollenbach's rug, Remembering Spring, in Celebration some time ago, but to see it in person--the sculpted hands, sleeve, face, hat brim--is a whole different experience. What a tour de force.
RIGHT: The rug shows an elderly woman, her hands resting on a double wedding-ring quilt, her gray hair straying onto the grayscale image of her young husband, intertwining vines behind the couple. The two gold wedding bands are hooked high, and the young groom's gold band is the only color in the figure. A very moving piece.
ABOVE LEFT: Gail Dufresne's sculpted lizard--OMG. ABOVE RIGHT: this happy pup was designed and hooked by Sally Kallin for her daughter.
ABOVE: Couldn't resist this charmer in Sally Kallin's booth, based on an antique rug.
BELOW: Turquoise Rhino, designed and hooked by Jon Ciemiewicz
BELOW: Carol Weatherman's Shore Bird. You would swear it's an antique!
LEFT: Quail designed and hooked byLynn Reed for a quail challenge ABOVE: Irises designed and hooked by Karen Maddox
ABOVE: Another eye-catching rug from Cheryl Bollenbach
BELOW: Between shopping, rug-gazing, and classes,
there was plenty of friendship time at the biennial.
ABOVE: Karla shared this pic of the class she and Pat took with teacher Keith Kemmer.
ABOVE: The Brandywine Guild of Chester, Pennsylvania, submitted 23 cupcake rugs to celebrate the 40th Birthday of the ATHA Biennial. Here are 10 of them!
We add our congratulations to the Denver volunteers and to ATHA
on a wonderful event.

Our First Annual
Member Retreat
November 22-24, 2019
This weekend gathering of MRH members takes place on the peaceful property of St. Benedict's Retreat Center in Schuyler, Nebraska. Two nights lodging, six hearty meals, and all-day hooking in a well-lit meeting room costs only
$100 per person
(double occupancy). Why? Because our chapter is subsidizing members' participation in this friendship-building weekend. Judy Cripps of Rustic Rugs will vend for limited hours and help you plan your next project. We also plan a casual evening discussion and brain-storming session about what Midwest Rug Hookers ATHA Chapter can become and how it can better serve our members. Due to this year's bookings at St. Benedict, we are limited to 30 spaces. If you are a member, or if you wish to join MRH (and ATHA), you are welcome to reserve your spot at our retreat while space is still available. (Next year's retreat date will be November 13-15, 2020, and we hope to reserve lodging for more members.)
For more information about our 2019 Member Retreat, please contact Luci Bolding at

Van Gogh Rug Hooking
with Janet Conner
March 25-27 and March 28-30
Includes An Afternoon of Art, Wine, and Wool for all students in both classes on Friday, March 27th!
PLUS--Popcorn, Pizza, and a Movie on Friday night!
We can offer two three-day workshops with Janet Conner, nationally-known teacher from Hiram, Maine, back by popular demand after her much-loved 2018 workshop on aboriginal art. This time the theme is Van Gogh. Students may choose to hook an adaptation of a Van Gogh painting or to hook a chosen subject in the Van Gogh style.
Janet's book on Art History for Rug Hookers will be out in 2020. A lifelong art teacher with great personal warmth, Janet is uniquely qualified to help you take your rug hooking in an exciting new direction. She teaches all cuts--wide or narrow.
These workshops will be held at the very affordable Comfort Inn at 108th and L Streets in west Omaha. We still have spaces left. Please contact Karla at

If we don't see you at our Fall Meeting, friends, we hope to catch up with you at the Nebraska Fall Hook In on September 27th. In the meantime, choose a rug or two for our rug show, won't you? We want to see what you've been hooking. We look forward to shopping and learning and being inspired along with you!
Until then, all our best,
