Greetings from Becky Faith

Hello!

Portfolio risk doesn’t wait for the next reporting period. Slower collections, narrowing margins, or delivery delays can develop between scheduled reviews, leaving private equity teams with less time to investigate and respond. Recognizing those changes earlier starts with bringing the right financial and operational information into view.

In our latest article, “See the Risk Earlier. Make the Decision Faster.,” we explore how connected reporting can help investment teams recognize meaningful changes across their portfolio. From selecting useful signals and verifying the underlying information to assigning responsibility for investigation, an effective monitoring process connects what leadership sees with the decisions that follow.

Discover how a clearer view of portfolio performance can help your team ask more focused questions, strengthen conversations with company management, and determine which issues need attention before the next board package arrives.

See the Risk Earlier. Make the Decision Faster.

A portfolio company rarely moves from healthy performance to serious difficulty in a single reporting period. Changes often appear gradually: customers take longer to pay, margins begin to narrow, delivery reliability slips, or sales activity stops converting into expected revenue. The challenge for private equity leadership is recognizing which changes deserve attention while there is still time to investigate and respond.

Periodic reporting provides an important record of performance, but the reporting calendar does not control when a business problem develops. A company can experience cash pressure or an operational setback between scheduled reviews. If investment teams first encounter the issue in the next board package, their initial discussion may focus on explaining the result rather than understanding the earlier signals that led to it.

Seeing risk earlier begins with selecting information that connects to a decision. A portfolio dashboard does not become more useful simply because it contains more metrics. The relevant question is what leadership needs to know to identify a meaningful change in the business. For one company, that may be collections and cash availability. For another, it may be customer concentration, order cancellations, production delays, or the cost of fulfilling existing commitments.

Consider a business whose revenue remains close to plan while receivables age and customers increasingly dispute invoices. Revenue alone may suggest stability. Looking at collections, disputes, and cash together could raise a different question: is reported growth translating into available funds? That combination does not establish a diagnosis, but it provides a reason for finance leadership to investigate before the next scheduled reporting discussion.

Operational signals can provide similar context. Rising overtime, increasing rework, or persistent delivery delays may warrant attention even before their full financial effect appears. Investment teams need to understand whether the change is temporary, seasonal, or evidence of....Click the link below to finish the article
