DESIGN NOTE | M3-F and M3-FS FOCUS MODULES
Checking Optical and Imager Geometry for Focus Module Developer’s Kits
M3-FS and M3-F Focus Modules add high-resolution lens motion to embedded optical systems in handheld and portable instruments.

The complete lens motion system including built-in controller requires no more space than a typical fixed lens mount. Input is 3.3VDC.

Developer’s Kits are available at Digi-Key, electroverge, and Mouser. The M3 modules in the developer’s kits accept a broad range of lenses and work with image sensors up to 17x17 mm including 1/2″ and 1/1.8″ formats.
A design note, Checking Optical and Imager Geometry, provides lens recommendations and guidelines for determining image sensor and lens compatibility with the M3-F and M3-FS Focus Modules. We discuss:

  • Module mounting hole pattern
  • Lens thread
  • Lens dimensions
  • Lens focal length for your imager size
  • Lens travel required
  • Imager array thickness (mounted)

M3-TMM-U2-4.5-6 Two-Axis Tilting Mirror Module Developer's Kits Now Available for Pre-Order

In this motion module, patented UTAF piezoelectric ultrasonic motors move a single mirror in two independent orthogonal axes. Motor drivers, position sensors, and communication are built in to the module, making it an all-in-one solution for controlling laser beams in multiple axes.

Preliminary specifications include:

  • 14 X 14 X 7 mm size including controller
  • +/- 8 degrees of tilt in both axes
  • 0.01 degree resolution and 0.02 degree repeatability
  • 15 millisecond step and settle for 0.5 degree step
  • 3.3 VDC input with off-power hold
  • Built-in controller accepts digital commands via SPI or I2C interface
