Advance Joins Minnesota's "Elite Eight"

We’re pleased to announce that Advance was one of eight organizations recently awarded a transformation grant by the Minnesota Department of Human Services to increase competitive integrated employment and community engagement outcomes for the people it serves. The grant funding resources are provided to help Advance build new organizational capacities over time through service redesign and introduction of promising practices.

So what exactly will this mean for Advance and the people it supports? Here is a partial list of our project objectives:

  • Launch “state of the art” practices to deliver the best outcomes possible
  • Expand choices and types of jobs people can obtain in our workforce
  • Secure better wages (at least minimum wage) and benefits for people obtaining jobs
  • Build creative partnerships with business leaders that hire job seekers
  • Learn how to negotiate, customize jobs in ways that use the strengths, abilities, and potential contributions of individual job seekers
  • Increase opportunities/choices for wrap around, non-work community engagements
  • Increase social interaction/inclusion of people we support with other community members
  • Increase skills/competencies of our managers and direct support professionals (DSPs)
  • Better align services and outcomes with our values and mission to support people in achieving a richer, self-determined life

Advance’s transformation will unfold gradually, deliberately, and over a manageable period of time. Our leadership team is developing a new business plan guided by our board of directors and Minnesota Transformation Initiative Technical Assistance (MTI TA) Center. We’re excited to share that we’re working with two experienced technical consultants who have track records of success in working with similar transformation projects inside Minnesota, nationally, and internationally. Our MTI consultants, Staci Jones and Don Lavin, visited Advance in September and they’re guiding us in taking actionable steps to help Advance grow and prosper as an organization.

At Advance, we’re excited about our future and the promise of this project to help us engage fuller, richer lives for the people we’re privileged to support. We value our many community partners, and as always, welcome your ideas and participation to help us Advance this important work. Watch for more information to come!

Let's Learn Something New Every Day

Advance staff have been working hard to incorporate learning into daily activities, both essential life skills and personal interests. Here are a few topics that individuals served have been learning about through videos, outings, hands-on activities, games and worksheets in our October Day Services program:

  • Social and communication skills
  • Trivia
  • History on west/east coast
  • History on cars
  • Math worksheets
  • Get well cards for an individual
  • Birthday cards
  • Manners
  • Individuals served joined virtual sessions to connect/learn about new topics
  • Art projects: Halloween hand painting, diamond art, wooden pumpkins (see photos above)

Interested or Curious About Virtual Services?

Advance offers individualized services through an online platform to connect home and work and extend learning beyond the typical workday. It extends learning by creatively including life skills, routines, music, drama, and job skills. Through Virtual Services we can establish and maintain regular and effective contact with individuals even if the weather or other extenuating circumstances makes it difficult to meet in person. We believe learning continues our whole lives and we believe that you have the freedom and power to learn about topics of interest to you.

Success Story: The Positive Impact of ResQ Zone

The ResQ Zone is making a positive impact on local families: Just recently a family that didn't have a computer in their home received one of the ResQ Zone's refurbished computer. The family was so thankful that they can now search/apply for jobs and children can do their homework. Thanks to Lyon County and Jason at ResQ Zone for all the work you do - you never know how your work will impact the next person!

If you are interested in donating computers or applying to receive a computer, please call the Lyon County Environmental Office at 507-532-8210. Or click here to learn more.

Recycling Jobs Receive Raises

We are pleased to announce that individuals employed by Lyon County Environmental Office for recycling and landfill jobs will be receiving an hourly raise starting November 1, 2022. Annually, they will receive a 3% increase.

Thank you to Roger Schroeder, Lyon County Environmental Office Administrator, and the Board of Commissioners for reviewing this request and making it happen! And a big thank you to Deb Breyfogle and recycling/landfill employees who helped advocate raises for these positions – you should be very proud of the work you do and your advocacy!

WINTER SAFETY MEMO

Winter weather is just around the corner. To help keep everyone safe, please keep the following in mind:

We had several people fall last year in the Advance parking lot. We are working on fixing the drainage but weren’t able to get the repairs scheduled this summer. We will also do our best to drop people off close to the doors and keep sidewalks salted. This won’t solve all the problems that Minnesota weather causes so please consider wearing ice cleats on your boots!
