Dear NHPA Members,
This past year will be remembered as an utmost challenging and difficult time in many ways due to the COVID-19 pandemic. I would like to take this moment to give my deepest and heartfelt condolences to all of our members who have experienced the loss of loved ones. I would also like to gently encourage all of us who need mental health help to seek professional assistance. Reach out, ask for help, it is okay to not be okay.
I would also like to acknowledge all NHPA members who are on the front lines in this battle against the COVID-19 pandemic, whether it is in hospitals, community pharmacies, medical clinics, or COVID-19 vaccine clinics. Thank you for all that you do, you are greatly appreciated.
As I look forward to 2021, I reflect on the many conversations I have had with our NHPA members over the years. Consistently, I am amazed at the talent, passion, and dedication all NHPA members have for our Hispanic/Latinx communities. Now is the time to let you step forward and blossom into your full leadership potential as an NHPA national leader. The NHPA Board of Directors has approved a variety of new national leadership positions available to all NHPA members, including Pre-Pharmacy Students and Pharmacy Technicians. I am confident that with this new leadership structure, we are all setting up NHPA for success for years to come. Will you be part of NHPA national leadership history?
I urge all who are interested in NHPA leadership positions to promptly apply for them. The deadline to submit your application is March 10th. I look forward to your positive influence on NHPA.
With great appreciation,
Dr. Maria M. Hearns-Rivas, PharmD, APh, BCGP, CDCES
President,
National Hispanic Pharmacists Association

UCSF Chapter Update
This week we welcomed our incoming elective board via zoom! Over the next few weeks, we'll be transitioning our first-year pharmacy students to take over while the outgoing board gets ready to tackle their rotations. We're excited to continue providing a professional and welcoming community for our LatinX students, and all those who wish to participate. Below I have attached the image of the new board members!
From the top row right to left: Gabby Mackey (outgoing president), Emily Leon (incoming historian), Jessica Arango (outgoing vice president)
Second row right to left: Jazmin Valencia (secretary), Daniel Carvalho Oliveira (committee chair), Emily Nguyen (webmaster)
Last row right to left: Teresa Mendoza (treasurer), Alec Barajas (incoming president), and Janille Miranda (incoming vice president)
The NHPA Student Chapter at UCSF would like to invite you to give a presentation on a topic of your choosing to our student chapter. Our students would love to learn more about your field of pharmacy, your day-to-day activities, or your professional journey. If you have any topics you are passionate about and would like to share, we would be open to that as well. Our talks are typically 45 minutes - 1 hour in length and are open to NHPA student members as well as other UCSF pharmacy students. Given the current pandemic situation, the event would be held virtually over Zoom during the lunch hour, 12:10-1:00 PM PST.
If you are interested in discussing a potential lunch talk, we would love to hear from you. Please contact our secretary, Jazmin Valencia (jazmin.valenciachavez@ucsf.edu), with any questions or inquiries. Thank you so much for your time!

The University of Michigan College of Pharmacy is accepting applications for their Racial Equity to Advance Community Health (REACH) Clinical Pharmacy Fellowship. This 2-year fellowship is an immersive program to foster development of health equity research skills through service to underserved populations. Our overarching goal is to foster development of clinical translational scientific skills that increase the fellow’s competitiveness for a position in academia, community health, or a health policy environment. We have 2 fellowship positions available – one in primacy care and one in cardiovascular care. The fellowships will start July 2021.
We seek candidates with a PharmD from an accredited university or equivalent, who have completed a PGY1 residency from an accredited program or comparable ambulatory care experience, with good oral and written communication skills, ethics, professionalism, and ability to work in a team-based environment.

The National Hispanic Medical Association recently partnered with Allied Against Opioid Abuse to release a suite of resources to help educate the Hispanic community about the rights, risks and responsibilities associated with prescription opioids. The toolkit features three downloadable and printable resources available in both Spanish and English, along with an informational Spanish-language video providing key insights on safe prescription opioid use from NHMA physicians. The toolkit serves an especially important role during the COVID-19 pandemic, as more people are staying home to help stop the spread of coronavirus. The toolkit provides individuals and families with critical information regarding the safe storage and disposal of prescription opioids during this challenging time. We encourage you to share the resources and video with your patients and colleagues.
