Welcome to the First Edition of the National Hispanic Pharmacists Association Quarterly Newsletter!
President's Corner
Esteemed NHPA Members,

It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I welcome all of you to our organization - the National Hispanic Pharmacists Association. Our mission is to empower Hispanic pharmacists and other members to improve the health of Hispanic populations in collaboration with public and private sector partners. Our vision is to be the lead pharmacy organization for improving the health of Hispanic populations in the United States. With a collaborative effort, we shall achieve our goals in order to help lose the health disparity gaps that exist in our communities.

I would like to give a warm welcome to our NHPA Student Chapters, and than them for taking on the challenge of starting a new chapter in their schools and being ambassadors in their comunidades . I vividly recall my pharmacy student days, and my wish for you all is for NHPA to elevate you and set you up for success in a thriving pharmacist career.

To all our NHPA members, from pre-pharmacy to licensed pharmacist, I urge you all to take a minute to reflect and determine the changes that you would like to have happen in your communities. How can NHPA support you? How would you like to get involved with NHPA to help achieve those goals? Change does not happen overnight, but rather through a multitude of small steps in the right direction.

I would also like to give a special thank you to our NHPA Corporate Sponsors - CVS, Walmart, and PhRMA, without whom NHPA would not have the means necessary to come to fruition.

Thank you to the National Hispanic Health Foundation Staff for all of your incredible support and dedication. Finally, I would like to express my utmost appreciation to our NHPA CEO, Dr. Elena Rios, MD, for her guidance.

Dra. Maria M. Hearns-Rivas, PharmD, APh, BCGP, CDE
President, National Hispanic Pharmacists Association

Important Announcements
Call for NHPA Pharmacists Members
Student mentorship, we believe, will be a foundation for NHPA's growth and empower future pharmacists to improve the health of Hispanic populations. We would not be able to accomplish this without your involvement. At this point we have a large student membership and many are interested in being paired with a Pharmacist to guide them to their future career. We will be pairing our student members with our Pharmacist members soon. Please reach out to Lisa Serrano if you are interested in having more than one student as a mentee and if so, what the maximum number will be.

In addition, we are looking to improve our programs offered to all members and are calling for Committee Members. Volunteering for the Programs Committee would allow your voice and vision to be recognized and will influence our educational goals for the development of NHPA members. Such areas of contribution will be in decision making of mentor-mentee pairing, student seminars (ex. Residency preparation, student work-life balance, preparing your curriculum vitae and interview preparation, etc.), continuing education seminars for pharmacists, etc. The commitment of volunteering for a role in our Programs Committee will require working closely with the NHPA Board of Directors ~1-2 hours a month while we connect for brainstorming meetings on our monthly topics, and submission of your curriculum vitae (CV).

Please contact Lisa Serrano, PharmD, for more information.
