The Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Corporation is the marketing organization promoting Alleghany County, the City of Covington and the Towns of Clifton Forge and Iron Gate for business recruitment, expansion and development. A public/private partnership, AHEDC focuses on Site Readiness, Infrastructure Management, Site Selection Outreach and Workforce Development. The organization also serves as a key information source for applicable data, regulatory compliance and funding opportunities to help you successfully launch, expand or relocate a business to the region.

Pad Ready Site Ready for Grading

The Covington-Alleghany County Industrial Development Authority (CA-IDA) is steadily working to develop a business ready site for our target industries such as: traditional manufacturing, food and beverage production, pharmaceuticals/medical products, distribution centers, etc., to further growth and investment in the Highlands.

Our project is located in the Alleghany Regional Commerce Center (ARCC), near Timber Lane and Piney Ridge Road, on public land. The CA-IDA has been working closely with the City of Covington and Alleghany County on this project. It is all about marketability and this site is now at a Tier 4. AHEDC will be marketing this project for prospective customers once it is under full construction with bulldozers. We plan to utilize aerial images and progress reports as we move forward with this project.

We are leading this development for the region on behalf of the City and County, who are jointly funding the project. Our goal is to grade 50 acres within the 104 acres near ARCC in phases. A total of 4 construction phases have been identified to grade the site to be “business ready.” We are working with Timmons Group on finalizing the design. It is important to note that this project will meet or exceed all Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) regulations and guidelines, and will follow all required permitting requirements, such as those from the Army Corps of Engineers.

Site readiness is a priority of the state and our Governor. Business Ready Site Development is a tried-and-true approach to economic development for the purpose of creating private sector growth and investment. Everything is being done to ensure this is a win and a success for ALL in the region. Stay tuned as updates follow!

Update on River Retreat Apartments

The “River Retreat” Apartments located in the Alleghany Regional Commerce Center in Low Moor next to the YMCA are moving right along.

The first of a 24-unit building is being constructed with a second 24 unit in the works. Once completed there will be a total of 96 units. This is a huge investment for the Alleghany Highlands providing living options to retain local employees preventing them from residing in other localities. Some other key attributes are giving the area more living option retention to support local businesses, strengthen the membership of the YMCA and a new tax revenue for the area. The availability of these should be mid July!
