The Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Corporation is the marketing organization promoting Alleghany County, the City of Covington and the Towns of Clifton Forge and Iron Gate for business recruitment, expansion and development. A public/private partnership, AHEDC focuses on Site Readiness, Infrastructure Management, Site Selection Outreach and Workforce Development. The organization also serves as a key information source for applicable data, regulatory compliance and funding opportunities to help you successfully launch, expand or relocate a business to the region.

Update on Pad Site
There was a public meeting held on Thursday, April 7, 2022 in the cafeteria of Alleghany High School. Engineers Tim Davey and Bryan Cichocki of the Timmons group provided an update on the Alleghany Regional Commerce Center pad ready site in Low Moor. This $6M project is to attract businesses who will offer employment and increase the region’s tax base.
The 100 acres site is a significant land holding the Industrial Development Authority has taken responsibility for. It is all about marketability and this site is at a Tier 2 which is harder to attract a business investment than a Tier 3 or Tier 4. A big advantage of this site is it’s publicly owned and zoned for economic development which makes it a Tier 2. Once this becomes a graded site and ready to go it will become a Tier 4. This site was prioritized as the number one site from the Alleghany Highlands Economic Development Corporation’s business plan. The AHEDC will be marketing this project for prospective customers once it is under full construction with bulldozers. We plan to utilize aerial images and progress reports as we move forward with this project. Stay tuned as we break ground this coming June. More slides:

Get to know Lori Conner, the owner of Barnwood Blessings, in this business spotlight below:
“I’ve been crafting for years and started by making signs for myself and our home to save money and one thing led to another and people started wanting me to make signs and grapevine wreaths for them. I began doing craft shows for many years, selling from Facebook and out of the back of my vehicle to tons of people! The business just kept growing and growing leading me to leave my full time job for a part time one while crafting all the time.
We opened our ‘She Shed’ at our home in September 2018 and our monthly sales skyrocketed to the point where I needed to be more accessible. After looking at numerous properties, we found The Main Street Shoppe and sweet Josephine and Lelia! We took it upon ourselves to do the entire renovation inside the shop making it a beautiful, cozy space where our customers have flocked to be inspired, their hearts filled with faith and their shopping bags full of beautiful blessings!
I’ve lived in the Highlands since birth and my husband, Chris, joined me here in 2004 from Halifax County and it’s been nonstop ever since!
The people of the Highlands and surrounding communities have been amazing to support us through each of our levels of growth and I know as we continue to expand, that will only grow as well!

Tell us about the Evergreen Inn.
Evergreen Inn offers four (4) furnished apartments as lodging for overnight and short-term rentals close to downtown Covington. We are situated at the trailhead of the Jackson River Scenic Trail and Alleghany Outdoors, which offers opportunities for walking, biking, kayaking and other outdoor activities for our guests. Each apartment has a private entrance and three are equipped with kitchenettes. It’s also possible to open the entire home for a large group of up to 18 people. We can provide a meeting space with tables and chairs for small groups. We've tried to make it cozy while keeping as many of the original details as possible and adding some unique things like barrier-free showers, the 1950's working oven and a 1950's soda shop milkshake maker!
What inspired you to open the Evergreen Inn, and how long have you been in business?
Evergreen Inn opened in November 2019 after evaluating the need for this type of lodging in our area. We have a love for older buildings and had a desire to see new life breathed into this beautiful 1900’s home. We are so happy to see it repurposed and used to meet a need in the community. Read more.
