Our 5520 District Governor
Richard Haas
Richard joined the Las Cruces Rio Grande Rotary Club in 2010 after an invitation from a close friend. He immediately became involved in the Club’s service projects. He served on the board as Membership Chair, Service Project Director, Club Administrator, Treasurer and as President in 2017-2018. Richard has also served the District as an Assistant Governor 2018 – 2020 and the District Conference Chair 2020 – 2021. He is a Paul Harris Society member and a Polio Plus member.
Raised in the Texas Hill Country, Richard graduated from Boerne High School and studied architecture at Texas A+M University graduating Magna Cum Laude in 1980. He received his master’s degree in architecture from the University of Colorado in 1982. Richard has practiced architecture in Denver, Austin, San Antonio, Santa Fe and for the last 28 years in Las Cruces, New Mexico. He currently is the president of Desert Peak Architects in Las Cruces, New Mexico. In 2007 Richard received the New Mexico Architect’s Medal for his architectural work in the region. He has served his community in various capacities over the years including the Downtown Revitalization Committee, the Chamber of Commerce as Chair of the Board, local Scoutmaster, and as Chair of the Southwest Spaceport Task Force Chair which led to the establishment of Spaceport America in New Mexico.
Richard and his wife Susan have been married for 43 years. Their family includes a son and daughter, each with their own family living nearby and 7 grandchildren. After retiring from the US Postal Service, Susan returned to NMSU and earned her Nursing degree and is an RN in Las Cruces. They both enjoy traveling and motorcycling throughout the Southwest.
