Seed Success!

Growing your own bedding plants, herbs and vegetables from seed can be so rewarding and save you money! Follow these tips for seeding success;

Time It Right

Start too early and you'll end up with a jungle of overgrown plants. Start too late and your tomatoes won't ripen at all.

Most bedding plants and veggies should be started about 8 weeks before planting out at the end of May. Plant these seeds in late March or early April. However, some will require a bit more time and can be planted as early as mid-March. these include tomatoes, petunias and geraniums. View our helpful tip sheet on seeding dates for annual/perennials and vegetables.

Plant it Right

Start with soil mix designed for seeding, such as Black Gold Seedling Mix. Pre-moisten the soil. Follow the instructions on your seed package for the right seeding depth. Cover the seed tray with a humidity dome to lock moisture in.

Give it the Right Light

As your seeds germinate, it's time to remove the humidity dome and provide some bright light. Though a brightly lit window can help, the best seedlings are grown with supplemental lighting.

Light stands provide an affordable, compact way to provide the perfect amount of light for your seedlings; Various sizes available, from 2-4 foot lengths, $89.99 and up.
