 Empowering Your Mentee

and Building on Strengths

To facilitate the power of building on strengths, mentors attending last month's Seedling Training were given a picture of a frazzled family sitting in a seemingly chaotic and neglected living room. When asked to find 10 strengths the family possessed, the task seemed challenging.  But, when encouraged to look through a "strengths perspective" lens, mentors found that positives and potential assets of the family indeed emerged.  Read more...

Know Your Assets

The 40 Development Assets published by Search Institute is the most widely used model of Positive Youth Development in the world today.  Studies of more than 5 million youth consistently show that the more Developmental Assets young people have, the more likely they are to be prepared for life, and the less likely they are to engage in a wide range of high-risk behaviors.  The 40 Developmental Assets are values, experiences, relationships, and qualities that bring many benefits to the young people who have them. Mentoring with a "strengths perspective," by recognizing and building on strengths; will help develop your mentee's potential to thrive. Which assets does your mentee have? Which assets did you have at the same age?

Grief/Loss Support Groups

This fall, Seedling is proud to add a new source of support to some of our mentees. Thanks to a grant from Austin ISD, we were able to invite some of our School Contacts and other campus professionals to a four-day Institute in June to train them in facilitating a 10-week grief/loss support groups for Seedling-eligible students. We partnered with Khris Ford, the Executive Director of My Healing Place to lead the Institute.  Within the next two weeks, up to 20 schools will be launching these groups for interested students.  Therapeutic support groups have additional layers of confidentiality built in, so the information about whether your mentee is involved is unlikely to come to you. However, if your mentee happens to mention participating and wants to talk about his/her experience in the group, a good open-ended question is, as always, "How does being in the group make you feel?"  This question reminds us to stick with the feelings and not the facts.
