Christian Nationalism

Jesus answered: “My kingdom is not from this world” (John 18:36)

I remember being horrified yet not entirely surprised, on January 6, 2021. People showed up in Washington D.C. with American flags, weapons, and crosses, to hear a speech by President Donald Trump and then march on the Capitol. Many believed that they were there on a divine mission from God to uphold the United States. After the rioting began, during which several

people lost their lives, there were chants of “Hang Mike Pence!” from the shadows of a makeshift gallows. It is ironic, since at the center of Christian faith is our savior Jesus who was himself executed unjustly. The violence on display that day was horrifying, but it was just a symptom of a deeper, historical movement of people of faith who seek to have power and domination over others who don’t look or believe like them. This is Christian nationalism.

According to the Baptist Joint Committee & Freedom From Religion Foundation, Christian nationalism is “a political ideology that seeks to merge American civic life with a particular expression of Christianity, often to the exclusion of religious minorities and non-Christians." Christian nationalism, while an expression of Christianity, greatly distorts Christian faith.

Christians are not called to create a Christian state where people are forced to believe a certain way. That is a distortion of the Gospel, for the kingdom of God is neither the United States nor any other country. God is much bigger than any one country. That being said, there are aspects of our country that I appreciate deeply and I believe are very good. One of those good things is the first amendment of the U.S. Constitution that establishes the free exercise of religion and prohibits the establishment of religion by the state.

Why am I talking to you about this? It is not to tell you how to vote in an election. I speak on it because Christian nationalism is a dangerous gospel of violence and fear that only desires power. It wants to convince us that things would be better if everyone was forced to pray to God, adhere to a certain set of behaviors, and believe a certain version of Christian faith: that the United States is and always has been, a nation of and for Christians. Despite the reality that, throughout its time, our country has been filled with a wide variety of religious expression and people of many backgrounds. Historically, countries with one state religion persecute and harm; it does not go well.

Speaking from a faith perspective, Jesus did not call for his followers to seek worldly power over other people through violence or government control. He told Peter to put away his sword in the Garden of Gethsemane. He could have begun a violent revolution to force others to believe. But he didn’t do that at all. Christian faith is about a change of heart and life, as we come to knowledge of the saving grace of Jesus. Importantly, faith must be a free response to God’s love

for us not a state-sanctioned edict. Jesus calls us to love God with all our heart, mind, soul, and strength, and to love our neighbors as ourselves. Jesus calls us to be people of compassion and peace who work for justice and mercy, yes, but not through coercion, violence, or fear.

God’s peace be with you,

Leadership Highlights

Strategic Plan

May Update

Last November, our Charge Conference approved a new strategic plan. This plan included five priorities we hope to accomplish over the next couple of years together. Our theme is “growing a community of connection and belonging”. Here are some of the ways we have worked toward some of these priorities already this year. Items in bold are new over the last month.

Priority 1: We will determine and update areas of the church building by the end of 2026 in order to create inviting spaces for our congregation and neighborhood.

  • Established a building task force to determine areas to update within the church
  • Adopted a detailed proposal at Leadership Team in January
  • Installed new baby changing station in women’s bathroom in Fellowship Hall
  • Purchased and installed new AED, located in hallway near main office
  • Installed the Message Centers in lobby and Fellowship Hall
  • Painted the walls in the Fellowship Hall.
  • Carpeting is installed in the Library, Fellowship Hall, Main Entryway, and two of the classrooms in the Fellowship Hall.
  • Beginning exploration of new artwork/pictures for entryway and Fellowship Hall
  • Exploring options of new tile for bathrooms and kitchen.

Priority 2: We will connect with 500+ people in Fargo by May 2027, establishing new opportunities/events based on these conversations and partnerships, including First United

Methodist Church in downtown Fargo.

  • Hosted a Community Game Night on January 28th and

April 8th . We had good attendance each time for those events

with another game night happening on May 6th .

  • Developed the beginning of a new partnership with McKinley Elementary School, including opportunities for church members to serve as Lunch Buddies with students
  • Continued partnership with First United Methodist Church through Wednesday Lenten Worship services.
  • Missions and Outreach are planning more outreach events for this summer, including a Pet Blessing, Smores and Movie Night, and our annual Neighborhood Block Party.

Priority 3: We will establish a robust, consistent marketing strategy internally and externally, increasing attendance by 10% at church events by May 2027.

  • Established a Communications Team to help improve communications at the church
  • Updated and launched a new website for the church
  • Launched an advertising campaign for Palm Sunday and Easter Sunday, advertising to new homeowners in the Fargo Area
  • In early stages of developing a greater strategic marketing strategy for our church.

Priority 5: We will increase our membership by 25 people by April 2028.

  • Welcomed 3 new members to the congregation in February

The month of April we had two distributions and served 300 families at our food pantry. In April, I purchased 150 each of dozen eggs, peanut butter, oil and ground meat. We try to provide the items that are requested or needed the most.

Thanks to everyone one who helps with this great mission!

Community Game Night! Wednesday, May 6th!

Game night is back! Join us and invite a friend or loved one. Let's fill the Fellowship Hall for another installment of fun, food, games and connection. See you there!

Faith now has a Communications Team!

Last fall John Jarman and I started working with Pastor Jordan and Kristen on ideas for increasing our church's visibility in the community. We have updated the website and developed an outreach campaign for new neighbors. We plan to increase the church's social media presence and are looking for ideas for the best platforms to use in our community (Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, etc.). We are also looking at modernizing giving options. We are considering a point of service phone tap application.

If you have ideas or comments or would like to join our team, please text me or contact Kristen in the office. We'd love to have you!

Join us as we read and discuss the book The Social Principles of The United Methodist Church.

This 64-page booklet contains the official text of The Social Principles, exercises, a topical index, and the Social Creed, this resource is your key to understanding the church's stance on crucial topics.

For over a century, dedicated lay and clergy members of The United Methodist Church and its predecessor denominations have made legislative decisions to shape The Social Principles. These principles are the result of prayerful consideration and thoughtful efforts by multiple General Conferences to address complex and controversial global issues.

By engaging in this study, you can delve into your own theology and ethics, allowing you to grow in discipleship and further explore your beliefs. Don't miss out on this invaluable opportunity for personal and group growth.

Stop by the office to pick up your copy. Books are $10.

On behalf of the Moen family, we would like to extend our sincere thanks to Pastor Jordan and all the members of Faith United Methodist Church for their support, prayers, and encouragement over the past few months during this difficult time.
