Congressional Staff Visit Highlights WT Agriculture Facilities

Staff members from Congressman Ronny Jackson's office recently visited WT for a campus site visit, exploring the University's academic programs and facilities.

During their visit, the group toured the Paul Engler College of Agriculture and Natural Sciences' meat laboratory, gaining insight into WT's hands-on learning opportunities and the role of agriculture education and research in preparing students for careers in the industry.

The visit also included time with Dr. Pond and Dr. Kieth, where guests connected with leadership and enjoyed a stop for ice cream.

The visit highlighted WT's commitment to experiential learning, industry engagement and showcasing the impact of the University's agricultural programs across the region.

Dr. Lust Receives Honorary Lone Star Farmer Degree

Dr. David Lust, was awarded the Honorary Lone Star Farmer Degree during the 98th Texas FFA State Convention.

The Honorary Lone Star Farmer Degree is one of the Texas FFA Association's highest recognitions for individuals outside the classroom who have demonstrated outstanding service and support for agricultural education and FFA. The award honors business leaders, school administrators, community members and other advocates whose contributions have advanced agricultural education programs and created opportunities for FFA members across Texas.

Lust was recognized for his continued commitment to agricultural education, student success and leadership through his service to the profession and the Texas FFA Association.

Herdsmen Showcase University Tradition Through Outreach Events

WT Herdsmen spent the month of June connecting with students, families and community members through a variety of educational events, camps and special appearances, continuing their role as ambassadors for the University.

While the Herdsmen are best known for caring for WT's live buffalo and leading them onto the football field during football season, their responsibilities extend well beyond game day. Throughout the year, members participate in campus and community events where they educate audiences about the history of the American bison, the traditions of the Herdsmen and the University's rich agricultural heritage.

Whether speaking to camp participants, answering questions, posing for photos or representing WT at community events, the Herdsmen provide visitors with opportunities to learn about one of the University's most recognizable traditions while fostering connections with future students and alumni. In July, the Herdsmen also joined the Canyon Fourth of July Parade, representing WT and celebrating with community members throughout the region.

Through these outreach efforts, the Herdsmen continue to preserve and promote the legacy of the American bison while serving as student leaders dedicated to education, stewardship and community engagement.

Equine Program Horses Excel at IEA Nationals

WT's Horse Herd and Equestrian Team celebrated a successful showing at the 2026 Interscholastic Equestrian Association (IEA) National Finals, where horses from the University's program helped riders earn numerous national honors.

Horses provided by WT were ridden to five national championships and six reserve national championships while also contributing to 15 third through fifth place finishes and 13 sixth through eighth place finishes across multiple divisions.

Among the standout horses was Nic, provided by Dr. Christy Adams, who emerged as a crowd favorite throughout the competition. Nic carried riders to both a national championship and a reserve national championship while earning several additional top placings during the event.

The team's performance reflects the quality of WT's Horse Herd program and its commitment to developing well-trained horses that excel in collegiate equestrian competition. Through the success of its horses at the national level, WT continues to showcase the strength of its equine program and its impact on student and youth equestrian development.
