Lots of action on Jim's night-time ride with IMPD!
We all talk about the danger cops face on a daily basis, but talk is cheap and information is nothing compared with experience. Jim's time with officers left
him
impressed and confident. He said, "They are amazing in the way they handle difficult situations with kindness, and understanding. But when someone is in danger and guns are drawn, these officers look like a TV SWAT team in action. The thing is, it isn't a TV show." The Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Department is a new creature among police departments nation-wide. If you don't believe it, take a ride-along. You'll see them handle an unruly drunk with caring words and get him on his way, and the next hour, take on an armed search to protect an elderly woman's home. These men and women earn our respect and support every day. Said Jim, "There were moments I was looking around for a place I could duck if bullets started to fly, but take it from me, we are in good hands. Sign up to do a ride-along yourself, it was an eye-opener."

Seeing through God's eyes...
This is Jesse. For now he lives at the Pendleton Correctional Facility and we mentor each other in the art of agape love through our letters. He recently sent us at UNITE INDY this hand made gift, that says "Thank you for seeing me through God's eyes", and quotes 1 Samuel 16:7
"T
he LORD seeth not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart."
Who is it who said when you think you are helping someone, you are actually helping yourself? Genius! Consider writing to someone who is incarcerated. Many never get mail, and most are in desperate need of God's love.

The Riley Center is UNITE INDY's partner of the Month!
Mentoring is what they do.
The Riley Center is not like any other community center. It is one of only a few programs that reach youth and young adults using innovative mentor-supported training, hands-on activities in basic life style skills, and old fashioned nurturing to meet 21st century standards and benchmarks.
They work to restore each child's moral foundation and see the Riley Center as a gateway for children to reach forward to opportunities that include college, job preparation, social and emotional healing, and productive social engagement.

When did doing what you said you’d do go out of style?
Issues of trust are broken every day. Like when we volunteer for something and decide at the last minute we don’t feel like going—so we don't. Or, when a company says they’ll come and you sit there all day, but they don't show up?
Why are even the leaders among us often able to go against their own public pledges without remorse or explanation?
I am bothered by this. Joshua 2:21 says, “
According to your words, so be it.
” We are supposed to be true to our word. The very basis of trust is when small things are held sacred between two or more parties. Each does what they pledged to do so consistently, that soon they look back and see that they have built a bridge of trust that supports an uncommonly strong relationship. Maybe its just that stuff comes up, or maybe it's just us, not keeping our word?

The 241 W. 38th Street Update is Back!
The building is done and the city has approved this parking plan.
Time for celebrating! Getting an approval is no small feat. Miles of red tape have been dealt with, filings have been modified multiple times, and huge fees have been rendered as unto Caesar. Now the work begins on what is now a weed-filled lot.
We are so excited as we look forward to hosting those all important meetings between like-minded people who care about
all
our citizens, as they raise the tide that lifts all boats. Here's to smooth sailing ahead!

Almost 1 out of every 3 children in Indianapolis lives below the poverty level, yet our economy is roaring, and unemployment is at a historic low. But all this good news stops at the lines surrounding many of our inner city neighborhoods. In some neighborhoods of Marion County unemployment exceeds 20%. and poverty remains the overwhelming divider of people.
