In her book, The Yamas and Niyamas - Exploring Yoga’s Ethical Practice , Deborah Adele defines Tapas:

Tapas literally means “heat” and can be translated as catharsis, austerities, self-discipline, spiritual effort, change, tolerance, or transformation. Tapas has the sense of “cooking" ourselves in the fire of discipline to transform ourselves into something else. It is our determined effort to become someone of character and strength.

My Tapas goes into full force once summer hits. My practice is always at its strongest. I will do any outdoor activity you ask me. Do I want to bike, kayak, and run…? Yes! All three today, of course! I love when I hit my pillow at the end of the day, completely exhausted because I have used every ounce of energy my body has to give, only to wake up and embrace my tired, sore muscles. There is nothing like a sweet morning practice (outside preferably) to get you ready for the new day’s adventure!

My teacher, Linda Meacci, always says in her closing mantra to “seek the sun.” I love that so much! May you all be sunflowers and grow your spines long as you take in the energy and the power of the sun.

Wishing you the happiest of summers,
Rae
