Greetings!
“
Climate Justice” and “Just Transition” – how we define these:
THOSE MOST AFFECTED BY THE CLIMATE CRISIS, AND ITS SOLUTIONS, MUST BE THE FIRST TO BENEFIT FROM THE TRANSITION TO CLEAN ENERGY AND A FOSSIL-FREE FUTURE. IN THIS TRANSITION, WE MUST SEIZE EVERY OPPORTUNITY TO BUILD A MORE EQUITABLE ECONOMY.
As we transition to net zero carbon emissions by 2050, we must give full weight to the need for justice in achieving our goals. ECA calls for justice for every community and for every one of us and especially:
- Communities that have been harmed by the fossil fuel economy;
- Extraction‐dependent workers and the communities that have relied on fossil-fuel industries for their local economies;
- Rural communities that lack resources for emergency preparedness and recovery, education, broadband access, job skills training and community wealth-building;
- Workers who have been chronically unemployed and underemployed, displaced fossil fuel industry workers, the undocumented, the formerly incarcerated, and indigenous peoples;
- Workers who lack family-sustaining wages, adequate health, retirement, and other benefits, and protections for their health and safety, and rights to unionize and bargain collectively.
And for all of our children and grandchildren, justice and a livable planet. ECA will not stop until the equitable transition is fully achieved.

ECA Announces the creation of our new Environmental and Climate Justice Committee --
AND WE'RE LOOKING FOR VOLUNTEERS.
The Climate and Environmental “Justice” Committee will ensure ECA’s commitment, in words and in actions, to a policy of anti-racism and justice in all that we do as an organization. The committee will serve three primary functions:
- The Justice committee will establish relationships with organizations who have as their prime mission to further antiracism, justice and a just transition.
- Members of this committee will establish a review and evaluation process for all ECA campaigns and actions and continually assess and make suggestions for improved ways we can adhere to these commitments and take action.
- The Justice committee will evaluate and monitor the ways in which ECA utilizes and follows the Jemez Principles, part of the organizational values we’ve committed to.
Do you have experience that might help guide this committee? If so and you are interested in joining this committee please contact
info@eldersclimateaction.org
and use Justice Committee in the subject line. We will be vetting all members of this committee.

An inspiring story from Elders Promote the Vote Project Coordinator, Paul Dryfoos
ECA members who have stepped up for “Elders Promote the Vote” have called more than one million voters since 2018, and almost 300,000 so far in 2020. Now that we are seeing how COVID disrupts elections, we have focused on informing voters how to obtain and cast mail-in ballots. A recent experience made me realize just how important this work is. Our phone bank was calling Pennsylvania voters about mail-in ballots. I reached a voter named "David" in his room in a continuing care facility. When I explained the mail-in ballot option, he said that no one had told him about this. He had thought that his compromised health would mean that, for the first time in his adult life, he would be unable to vote. He thanked me profusely and said that there were at least ten other residents there who would want to vote by mail. So, with one call, we broke through David’s social isolation, empowered him to vote, and perhaps picked up ten more voters for the upcoming election.

ShoeStrike for Climate Justice!
On July 25, join people across the globe using their shoes and signs to demand climate justice for all. Modeled on the SkoStrejk movement that started in Sweden and is now spreading to other parts of the World, ShoeStrike allows you to stand for climate justice without being in your shoes, a safe way to protest during the pandemic. Contribute your shoes and signs to a local event or create your own ShoeStrike on a street corner, in your neighborhood park or in front of your home. Ask your neighbors and family to join! Share your ShoeStrike photos on Social Media, send photos to elected representatives and send them to ECA so we can share with our members! In the same tradition as Greta’s Schools Strikes, people across the globe will continue ShoeStrikes on the 4th Saturday each month through 2020.
