Some of the towns featured in this book include Beloit, WI; Philadelphia; Cradock, VA; Akron, OH; and West Collingwood, NJ. Nineteenth-century restorers transformed the appearance of all but a handful of churches in Leicestershire. Whenever possible, things were made to look medieval (or what was supposed to be medieval). This is well known; much was written about them at the time, and they were frequently discussed by later writers on the activities of the Gothic Revival. One further dramatic feature of 19th-century change is the removal of rendering on church walls. Despite its obvious aesthetic and archaeological importance, this attracted little theoretical discussion at the time and still less since. This paper aims to help redress the balance. Nicholson was a prolific British author, teacher, architect, mathematician and engineer. He is known for inventing several draughtsman's tools and for his theoretical work on the skew arch. He produced 27 works on technical and engineering subjects, including this one. This is one of his later works, never published in the US, and in a sense a culmination of all of his writings. The chief engineer of the project was Ole Knutsen Singstad, a Norwegian-American civil engineer best known for his work on underwater vehicular tunnels in New York City. Singstad's design for the ventilation system for the Holland Tunnel made long underwater road tunnels possible.
