Selected Titles for December 2024

Welcome to the 2024 holiday newsletter. As the saying goes, "the days are long, but the years are short!" Which brings us to December 2024, wondering, "where did the year go?!"

As several have mentioned, we skipped our November newsletter. But we were very busy nonetheless. Daughter Stephanie, who is an attorney in Manhattan, recently moved to Brooklyn's Park Slope region and hosted a dinner party for me and her sister Kim, with "featured guests" Clem Labine (right) and Jeff Greene (center). Both are preservation pioneers, whom I've known since the early 1990s. Clem started the magazine Old House Journal, Traditional Building, and Period Homes. And Jeff and his company Evergreene Architectural Arts have probably restored a train station or theatre near you. It was wonderful sharing experiences from our 30+ years of friendship.

Instead of doing the November newsletter, we focused on preparations for the so-called Boston "Shadow Show," which coincided with the big ABAA event at the Hynes Convention center. It was a one-day event, but proved to be very productive for us, with new customers from Canada, UK, Germany and Amsterdam. To those who are new to this newsletter, welcome to our monthly effort to find new homes for our books, prints and ephemera. We had nice steady traffic at our booth all day, pictured here.

The month of November witnessed the longest drought in New England in recent years, with 7-8 weeks without measurable precipitation. We experienced dozens of brush fires in eastern Massachusetts for the first time since I moved here in 1983. The next town to ours, Middleton, had several hundred acres burn. Each morning I was awakened to the smell of burning vegetation. Fortunately, we had a week of rain, which helped put it out.

I celebrated Thanksgiving this year with daughters Kim and Steph up in Gloucester, where we cooked a turkey on my Weber grill. It was a celebration of a productive house garden. We made mashed potatoes with home-grown russets from my foundation "acreage."

This holiday season offering has any number of gift-worthy titles, all in nice condition in excellent dust jackets. And we can certainly post them to you in time for holiday gifting.

We lost preservation David Garrard Lowe last month, and we are featuring two signed copies of his iconic "Lost Chicago," as well as several uncommon titles on thatched roofs, and international titles from the 1920s by Architectural Book Publishing Company.

We wish you all a happy holiday season, continued good health in the new year, and , of course

Happy browsing!

52 Designs to Modernize Main Street with Glass

Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company, Toledo, OH

[Art Deco]. Libbey Owens Ford Glass Company. 52 Designs to Modernize Main Street with Glass. Toledo, OH: The Architectural Record, nd ca 1935. First edition. Folio (12" x 14"), pp 76. Color architectural renderings, b/w floor plans and b/w elevations on each page.  Color Decorated Wraps, Navy/Grey. Pages Very Good, Binding Good.

This beautiful joint Architectural Record/Libbey Owens Ford Glass publication is a result of a competition in 1935 to design storefronts for grocery stores, drug stores, clothing shops, and automobile sales/service stations. Actual sites are described and photographed in the program, with the functional and space requirements. The required drawings to be submitted were plans, elevations, sections, structural details, and outline specifications. The jury awarded a number of awards in each category, which are shown in this folio sized volume. This is one of the best collections of Art Deco retail designs, if not the best, we've seen. 1910s Photograph of a Construction Site

Anonymous

[Photography]. Anonymous. 1910s Photograph of a Construction Site. nd c. 1910. Original edition. Albumen photograph, 6.5" x 8.75" mounted on a gray 10" x 12" board. Pencil inscription "Atlas Iron Works" at the top of the photograph. Photograph on Board Mount. Very Good: rounded edges, some soiling and scratches.

A terrific period photograph of eight workers on a construction site, with a lumber frame, a brick exterior, and a really interesting pulley system to transport materials to the roof. The Atlas Iron Works inscription is a mystery; the most likely candidate is Atlas Iron Works in St. Louis, but that company was established in 1922, which is likely too recent to fit this photographic format. Several other lesser known companies also used that name, so identifying the correct one will be difficult. We have two copies of this photograph in similar condition; one has the pencil inscription "Atlas Iron Works" at the top of the photograph, and the other does not. Your choice as to which one you purchase! (22931)   $50.00

Very Good; middle two pages have detached from the staple but are present.

A distinctive and uncommon publication about Kawneer's store fronts, focused on the construction more than the merchandiser. Includes details on sash, corner bars, division bars, transom bars, store fronts, windows, thresholds, brass ventilators, hollow metal mouldings, and kick plates. This company raised the standards for store fronts; these products are high quality and very attractive. (22932)   $125.00

Edifices De Rome Moderne (six volumes in five books, complete)

Text in English. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.

Paul Letarouilly's masterpiece has been hailed as the most beautiful book on Renaissance architecture ever published. Letarouilly devoted 35 years to drawing the plans, sections, elevations, perspectives, and large-scale details of gardens, convents, palaces, and churches of Renaissance Rome. His keen observational ability and immaculate drawing skills make this work an indispensable sourcebook. In many cases his etchings remain the only measured plans or elevations available; he also recorded buildings destroyed by later demolitions. This splendid reprint of the original edition published between 1840 and 1857 is complete with its 354 striking plates of architectural drawings and floor plans of magnificent churches and palaces, such as Palazzo della Cancellaria, the Sancta Sanctorum chapel, Palazzo Sacchetti, and many others. A spectacular copy with a wonderful dust jacket! The author spent three months sketching, measuring and photographing architecture in Spain during the first World War, in defiance of mines and submarines and "nervously suspicious officials." Possessing admirable photographic equipment, an inquiring mind, and the traditional artistic temperament, the author photographed and sketched everything that appealed to him, and these large format photographs are the result. A rare view into Spain during WWI. (22917)   $150.00

Venetian Houses and Details

[International]. Wiener, Samuel G. Venetian Houses and Details. New York: Architectural Book Publishing Company, 1929. First edition. Quarto, pp. 168, illustrated with b/w photographic plates. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Near Fine DJ.

The domestic architecture of Venice represents an unbroken tradition of eight or nine hundred years, to which every style from the Byzantine to the Baroque has made its contribution without interrupting continuity. The palaces of the Canal, the villas of the terra firma, even the simple farm houses, are full of suggestion, not only in composition, but in the sympathetic handling of materials. Any student of design will welcome the assemblage of photographs and sketches that the author has brought together in this volume. Particularly interesting are the detailed photographs of single features, such as windows, balconies, balustrades, doors, together with sketches of chimney tops, ironwork, and other elements. The dust jacket on this volume is in exceptional condition. (22938)   $90.00

The northern and central parts of Italy are well covered by guide books, but a journey to the southeastern portion of Italy in the early years of the 20th century was not so easy or so often undertaken. The provinces of Apulia and Basilicata have their own unique history, having been by turn inhabited by Greeks, Lombards, Arabs and Normans. Each culture left their traces in the construction that survives, and this book produced a wide range of interesting images for the reader to enjoy. This is the first time we've been able to offer this scarce book, and it is a delight that it has come to us with such an exceptional dust jacket. (22939)   $150.00

This work is based on Viollet-le-Duc's restoration of the most prominent landmarks in France: Notre Dame, Basilica of St. Denis, etc. His influence on 20th century architecture cannot be overestimated. In this philosophic essay, the author has concisely laid down the essential principles which should guide the architect when dealing with the restoration of historic buildings. "It should be the earnest care of our generation to hand on these heirlooms in stone to aftertimes, in a state of comeliness and integrity not inferior to that in which they were left by their earlier possessors." The English translations of Viollet-le-Duc's writings are considered influential to English thought on restoration, and are much sought after. Interest in architectural ironwork has dramatically expanded in recent decades, due to the pioneering efforts of Margot Gayle, founder of the Friends of Cast Iron Architecture, a national organization devoted to fostering appreciation of iron in architecture. She is also the author of "Cast Iron Architecture in New York," a book which inspired this one, which covers the cast ironwork in Philadelphia. The introduction was written by Roger Moss of the Athenaeum of Philadelphia, who noted that the author is "a pioneer in the early movement to save significant Victorian buildings in a city besotted with its colonial past and inclined to discount what came thereafter." The first important study of Philadelphia ironwork since Philip B. Wallace's narrowly focused Colonial Ironwork in Old Philadelphia, published in 1930. (22887)   $70.00

Lost Chicago (signed by the author)

Lowe, David Garrard

[Midwest US]. Lowe, David Garrard. Lost Chicago (signed by the author). New York: Watson-Guptill, 2000. Revised and enlarged. Quarto, pp. 261, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Signed by the author on the title page. Oversized Paperback. As New.

The City of Big Shoulders has always been our most quintessentially American—and world-class—architectural metropolis. In the wake of the Great Fire of 1871, a great building boom—still the largest in the history of the nation—introduced the first modern skyscrapers to the Chicago skyline and began what would become a legacy of diverse, influential, and iconoclastic contributions to the city’s built environment. Though this trend continued well into the twentieth century, sour city finances and unnecessary acts of demolishment left many previous cultural attractions abandoned and then destroyed. This book explores the architectural and cultural history of Chicago, a city whose architectural heritage was recklessly squandered during the second half of the twentieth century. (22898)   $45.00

Stone Houses: Traditional Homes of Pennsylvania's Bucks County

and Brandywine Valley

Richie, Margaret Bye, John D. Milner, Gregory D. Huber

[Masonry]. Richie, Margaret Bye, John D. Milner, Gregory D. Huber. Stone Houses: Traditional Homes of Pennsylvania's Bucks County and Brandywine Valley. New York: Rizzoli, 2005. First edition. Quarto, pp. 224. Indexed, illustrated with color photos. Hardcover. New in new dustjacket.

This is a unique presentation of beloved building traditions in one of the charming and historically significant regions in the nation. Houses, barns, and outbuildings dating from the colonial and Federal periods, built with local stone predominantly in an English Cotswold vernacular style, represent a form that has become popular across the nation. The stunning photographs document a remarkable collection of early buildings, as well as more recent designs. Bucks County and the Brandywine Valley are important not only for their history as an early English settlement in the New World, but also for their role as a crucial site in the struggle for American independence. A beautiful record of a historically rich regional building tradition, and thoroughly researched. This title has been out of print for years, and is an excellent addition to the architectural historian's bookshelf. (20913)   $60.00

Lost Chicago (signed by the author)

Lowe, David Garrard

[Midwest US]. Lowe, David Garrard. Lost Chicago (signed by the author). Boston, MA: Houghton Mifflin, 1978. Fourth printing. Quarto, pp. 241, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Signed by the author on the title page and inscribed in 1978 to Francis Steegmuller (1906-1994), an American biographer, translator and fiction writer. Oversized Paperback. As New.

Chicago's fine old buildings were falling like dominoes in the 1960s and 1970s, as the works of Louis Sullivan, the Victorian manses on old Prairie Avenue, and other treasures were senselessly wrecked and removed for the sake of progress. But author, preservationist, and historian David Garrand Lowe sounded the alarm as bulldozers rolled over the city's world-famous architecture. This book became a battle hymnal of the city's preservation movement, showing the glorious buildings that were callously pulled down, and chastising the policymakers and developers behind the destruction. For over 50 years, David Lowe fought to protect Beaux-Arts buildings in New York and Chicago, and he passed away in September 2024 at the age of 91. A rare chance to get a signed early edition of this important work. (22899)   $50.00

[Architects]. Fatio, Alexandra [Editor]. Maurice Fatio Architect. Palm Beach, FL: Alexandra Fatio, 1992. Limited Edition, 1500 copies. Quarto, pp. 277, illustrated with b/w photographs. Perfect Bound. Very Good.

The too-brief career of Maurice Fatio is traced from his letters to his parents in 1920 to his final commissions in the 1940s. He died in 1943. A detailed introduction by Eric Egan describes his career from his move from Geneva Switzerland to New York City in 1920 and his move to Palm Beach a few years later. He specialized in residential design in many different styles, including Spanish, Spanish-Colonial, Romanesque, Florentine, Art Deco, and Modern. There is, presently, a renewed appreciation for the skillful eclecticism that was the trademark of Fatio's Palm Beach work. No matter the style, Fatio's Palm Beach designs are recognizable by their highly controlled courtyard plans, well-proportioned facades, and elegant details. As the many photographs in this book illustrate, he was one of Palm Beach's most important architects. Very rare; this is the first copy we have been able to offer. (21044)   $175.00

The Idea of Louis Sullivan

[Architectural Monograph]. Szarkowski, John. The Idea of Louis Sullivan. Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press, 1956. First edition. Quarto, pp. 161, illustrated with b/w photographs. Signed in ink by a previous owner on the front endpaper in 1959. Decorated Boards. Very Good.

This book highlights the architecture of one of the mavericks of skyscraper architecture. The text gives a brief biography of Mr. Sullivan's life. The rest of the book consists of excerpts from various texts dealing with architecture and the challenges of leaving the mainstream. The photography is amazing. The viewer is treated to crystal clear black and white photography which gives us insight into Sullivan's work. The pictures are both close ups and overviews. They show us the detailed work of an architect who understood that function really does determine the form of a building. He also understood that height is what makes skyscrapers special and emphasized this in strong vertical lines, as we can see from the more distant views. Sullivan fought the classical revival, which was all the rage of his times, and used a combination of heavy and solid Romanesque architecture with art nouveau decoration. The result is both stunning and unique. This volume is one of the most interesting titles this month since its considerable strength is visual. (20488)   $40.00

This book analyzes a period when millions of average Americans saw accelerated improvement in their housing and domestic conditions. It is a detailed narrative that traces changes in household hygiene, sociability, and privacy practices that launched large portions of the working classes into the middle class, reconfiguring and enriching the standard account of the domestic transformation of the American home. "This book is the most important study of common American houses to appear in the past half century. Thomas C. Hubka draws on a lifetime’s investigation of working-class houses in the decades before World War II to show us how and why the single-family houses of the contemporary ‘middle-majority’ sprung from these modest dwellings. Hubka has established an agenda that should engross architectural historians for years. " -- Dell Upton, author of American Architecture: A Thematic History. The Société Anonyme: Modernism for America

This beautifully illustrated book highlights the unique history of The Société Anonyme, Inc., an organization founded in 1920 by the artists Katherine S. Dreier (1877–1952), Marcel Duchamp (1887–1968), and Man Ray (1890–1976). As America’s first “experimental museum” for modern art, the Société Anonyme provided a means for artists, rather than historians, to chronicle the rise of modernism. Architects' People

Ellis, Russell and Dana Cuff [Editors]

[Architecture]. Ellis, Russell and Dana Cuff [Editors]. Architects' People. New York: Oxford University Press, 1989. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 291, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

In the past there has been little reason to examine "architects' people"--the people who are imagined to occupy the buildings designed and executed by architects. Societies have historically provided clear rituals and rules for the built environment. Recently, however, the changing conditions of architectural conception and execution have resulted in a need for inventive, socially alert planning. This study, the first to survey the topic, presents architects' ideas about their "people." Contributors such as Robert Gutman and Kent Bloomer, provide fourteen diverse essays that look at individual architects--among them Vitruvius. Wright, Esherick, and Eisenman--and their spoken and written images of social life, their design solutions, the nature and origins of architects' people, and architecturally related policy, politics, and movements. An original treatment of an increasingly important topic, the book will be of interest to a wide range of architects, architectural historians, social scientists, educators, and students of design.
