Selected Titles for February 2022
|
|
What would a February newsletter be without yet another weather report? The last two weeks have been challenging, to say the least. Our first storm arrived just as predicted: 24+" of snow and 60mph winds, a so-called "cyclone blizzard." The positive: the snow was very dry, the storm arrived late Friday, and the winds were so high, that all the snow was blown off my roof!
A week later came about 2" of sleet accumulation, which was actually even worse! Hard to remove, and very dangerous, with over 200 car accidents in 24 hours.
|
|
As the second picture shows, the snow has turned North Reading common into a winter wonderland.
Our third photo is from five or six years ago, and shows my 30-foot booth at the Period Homeowners Show held each winter in Valley Forge, PA. Always a great time to catch up with old friends, and make many new ones. Will we ever get back to the days of old home fairs, where we sold to more than email addresses? I hope so.

|
This month's offerings have some great material: a nice section on period books on stair building, some uncommon pattern books and trade catalogs. And in honor of Black History month, we have two interesting titles: #15 on black American architects, and #25 from the Philadelphia Architectural Club. We also have some great bargains in the sales section.
Happy browsing!

African American Architects in Current Practice
Travis, Jack [Editor]
|
[Architecture]. Travis, Jack [Editor]. African American Architects in Current Practice. Princeton, NJ: Princeton University Press, 1991. First edition. Quarto, pp. 96, with chronology of American black architects and a map showing where the firms are located, illustrated with b/w photographs. Cloth over Boards. Very Good; no DJ as issued.
The release of Spike Lee's film "Jungle Fever," whose lead character is a black architect, and coverage of the movie by the New York Times in 1990, both sparked interest in black professionals in architecture. At the time, there was very little documentation regarding the achievements of black architects in our society. This book profiles 35 significant individuals (8 women, 27 men) and 22 firms, presenting people of color in architecture as positive role models and architecture as an alternative profession to black youth. Very scarce; this is the first time we've been able to offer a copy for sale. (20965) $150.00

With photographs and floor plans, and an informative text, the author shows how architects in cities around the world have answered the problems of high-density living. The second section covers the masters of modern architecture - Walter Gropius, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, and Le Corbusier. The increasing activity and differentiation of architectural concepts after 1918 are studied in the third part of the book. Modernizing Buildings for Profit

In this book, the author posits an evocative analogy between modernized buildings and style goods. He compared commercial buildings in need of modernization to automobiles, noting that "even Ford found that it was not enough to produce a car which would run at a low price. It must also have eye appeal for the customer." The book deals with those things which must be investigated and considered in order to reach an intelligent decision as to whether it will or will not be profitable to modernize a particular building, and contains floorplans and many photographs of all kinds of buildings: homes, businesses, hotels, restaurants, and more. Modern Architecture: Romanticism and Reintegration
Hitchcock, Jr., Henry-Russell
|
[Modern]. Hitchcock, Jr., Henry-Russell. Modern Architecture: Romanticism and Reintegration. New York: Payson & Clarke Ltd, 1929. First edition. Octavo, pp. xvii, 252, indexed, plus 58 b/w plates. Original Cloth. Good, cover sunned and worn, 1" split at top of backstrip.
This book demonstrates the architecture of the 1920s as the product of over a century of architectural development, despite the visual evidence that seemed to indicate that it had made a radical break with the past. This book crystallised the history and theories behind the "international style" for an American audience. Hitchcock was only 27 at the time, and this was his first book; yet it would substantially reshape the way subsequent generations would view modern architecture and its history. Furthermore, this is the book that would establish Henry-Russell Hitchcock as a pre-eminent American historian of modern architecture. Scarce in first edition. (20938) $40.00

The entrance and the circulation system are the first subjects for study. No plan can develop without knowledge of the stairway and how to control the amount of floor space it occupies and where it stops and starts. And finally, garage, driveways, orientation, and the building site are discussed. A beautiful and complete study of the process of planning and building a home. (20909) $40.00

Green Cloth over Boards, Gilt decoration and lettering. Very Good; some edgewear to backspine and corners, mild ex-library markings.
This book classifies the smaller types of houses of the Later Renaissance in England and presents a series of examples, many of which had been unknown before this publication. The book is wide in its scope, including considerations of local and regional traits; it deals also with the influence of material on design, and aims at making clear the evolution in style that took place. There are four divisions into which the development groups, namely: Transitional (Carolean), Early ("Wren Period" and Queen Anne), Middle (Palladian), and Late (Revived Classic), all of which are rich in the diversity of composition shown by the buildings exhibited. Well researched and beautifully photographed. (20955) $100.00

Building in the USSR 1917-1932
Shvidkovsky, O. A. [Editor]
|
[International]. Shvidkovsky, O. A. [Editor]. Building in the USSR 1917-1932. New York: Praeger Publishers, 1971. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 144, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.
In the belief that the best interpreters of the period would be Soviet authorities on the subject, Architectural Design, a dynamic British journal, invited the author to edit an issue (February 1970) on the Soviet Constructivists. This book is an expanded and revised version of the material published in that issue. Two important new essays on Melnikov and the Vesnin brothers are included, along with numerous new illustrations. The ideals and courageous experimentation of the Constructivists remain significant and relevant today, in both the Soviet Union and the West. Growing interest in the achievements of these pioneers, therefore, makes a reappraisal of the individual architects particularly interesting and timely. (20952) $40.00

In this book, leading domestic designer Johnny Grey continues the theme he began in his The Art of Kitchen Design - the harmonious blending of functional requirements with fine craftsmanship and humane values - extending it to the whole house and its rooms. He looks back into the past for solutions that worked, as well as at recent developments in Europe, the USA and Australia, showing that contemporary solutions can find roots in sources as diverse as the traditional Japanese house or a Shaker workroom, while the values of the Arts and Crafts movement can be seen to be as relevant today as a century ago. The Simple Home

|
[California]. Keeler, Charles. The Simple Home. Santa Barbara, CA: Peregrine Smith, 1979. Reprint of 1904 edition. Octavo, pp. 55, illustrated with b/w photographs. Cloth over Boards. As New.
All the arts are modes of expressing the One Ideal; but the ideal must be rooted in the soil of the real, the practical, the utilitarian. Thus it happens that architecture, the most utilitarian of the arts, underlies all other expressions of the ideal; and of all architecture, the designing of the home brings the artist into closest touch with the life of man. A movement toward a simpler, a truer, a more vital art expression, is now taking place in California. It is a movement which involves painters and poets, composers and sculptors, and only lacks coordination to give it a significant influence upon modern life. One of the first steps in this movement, it seems to me, should be to introduce more widely the thought of the simple home - to emphasize the gospel of the simple life, to scatter broadcast the faith in simple beauty, to make prevalent the conviction that we must live art before we can create it. [Design]. Perry, Barbara Stone. On the Surface: Late Nineteenth-Century Decorative Arts. Charlotte, NC: Mint Museum of Art, 2001. First edition. Quarto, pp. 111, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Perfect Bound. Very Good in Wraps.
This catalog was published on the occasion of the exhibition by the same name, organized by the Mint Museum of Art in Charlotte, North Carolina in 2001. The book and exhibit presented a unique opportunity to explore the artful, and oftentimes highly fanciful, treatment of surfaces created by late 19th century artists and craftsmen in response to social, cultural, and aesthetic exchanged that developed across the globe between 1870 and 1900. It was an age of visual and sensatory indulgences that embraced perceptions of the "exotic" while promoting the beauty of a handcrafted and hand-finished object. This exhibit investigated the plethora of ornamentation and lush embellishments that numerous craftsmen, designers, decorators, and artists of the era generated in the expansive field of decorative arts. The reader will find pleasure and enlightenment in the beauty of these objects. The stunning photographs document a remarkable collection of early buildings, as well as more recent designs. Bucks County and the Brandywine Valley are important not only for their history as an early English settlement in the New World, but also for their role as a crucial site in the struggle for American independence. A beautiful record of a historically rich regional building tradition, and thoroughly researched. This is an excellent addition to the architectural historian's bookshelf. (20913) $60.00
