Selected Titles for February 2025

Greetings from the northeast, which is in the midst of the Winter from Hell! We've had one uneventful snow storm - more an inconvenience than anything else - after another. As I write this, our little New England town is sandwiched between an 8" snow storm on Super Bowl Sunday, and two more stow storms predicted by the weekend.

My two daughters know how to deal with this: they booked a long week getaway together in Costa Rica! As I was in my third hour of shoveling snow on Sunday, they were on a trip away from their resort hotel horseback riding and zip lining through the jungles in 80 degree warmth.

My first picture is of my younger brother John, taken in his back yard in Hawaii. The sunny Hawaiian weather makes it hard to see what is in the frame, but it is a 19th-century chromo-lithograph depiction of the paddle-wheel steamboat "J. B. Schuyler," which a colleague from upstate New York, Peter Luke, had for sale at the November Boston "Shadow Show," I called my brother, whose name is John B. Schuyler, and explained this happy coincidence. He bought it, my friend and colleague Michael Shortell framed it in an 1870s lemon gilded frame, and we have an instant family heirloom!

My second photo is of a Valentine done for us local veterans, by a group of elementary school students. Our VA representative had spoken to the students about service to our country, and they each made Valentines for us. This one caught my attention.

And finally, a reminder that we will be exhibiting at a wonderful event next month in Greenwich, Connecticut, the Ephemera Fair. We'll feature a booth full of visually attractive and interesting books and works on paper. I'm told that we get a limited number of free passes, so if you are interested, let us know. Link: https://www.ephemerasociety.org/fair/

This month's "omnium gatherum" features a nice cross-section of titles for the building trades, architectural historians, and period homeowners. One of my favorites is #54, in the Under $40 section. It is a Boy Scout merit badge pamphlet on architecture. Full disclosure: I had an illustrious career in Cub Scouts, but hit the wall in Boy Scouts. I couldn't get past Tenderfoot status because I refused to memorize Morse code. In my mind, Morse code had a great future behind it. I instead dedicated my energies to something with much more of a future: the slide rule!

Another noteworthy entry this month is a full run of the first decade of Clem Labine's periodical Old House Journal (#25). Clem told me that when he inauspiciously launched the first issue of OHJ, he had a grand total of three subscribers, and one of them was his mother!

With the preparation for the Ephemera Fair, and a trip to Germany, this may be our last newsletter until May. We hope there is something for everyone here -

Happy browsing!

Stevens Mansion in New York City

Anonymous

[New York]. Anonymous. Stevens Mansion in New York City. nd c. 1900. Original edition. Five cardboard pieces, each one 1.25" x 7" in size, showing a portion of a color illustration of the Stevens Mansion in New York City. Two of the pieces ("U" and "S") have light creases. Cardboard . Very Good.

This building once stood on West 57th Street in New York City. Architect George Harney designed the sprawling three story in a jumble of styles that came together in a cohesive whole. The brick and stone mansion included a Romanesque Revival portico, a chateauesque, cone-capped tower; German Romanesque openings at the second floor; a French Second Empire pavilion on the Fifth Avenue side; and an irregular roof line of dormers and gables. Its neighbor was the Vanderbilt Mansion. It was torn down in 1919, and the Crown Building now stands in its footprint. The purpose of this set of cards isn't clear, but assembled, they recreate the facade of a building that the New York Times once said was "considered in its way the most beautiful in New-York." First edition. Folio (11" x 14"), pp. 50 plus 273 b/w photographic plates and architectural drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Mylar DJ.

Bertram Grosvenor Goodhue was an American architect celebrated for his work in Gothic Revival and Spanish Colonial Revival design. The Palladian style dominated British architecture for most of the 1700s, until the rise of the Adam style, which held sway for the final decades of the eighteenth century. Brothers Robert and James Adam were almost single-handedly responsible for infusing Georgian architecture with the sensibilities and elements of classical Hellenic and Latinate design. Their elegant, sophisticated form of Neoclassicism affected not only architecture, but also interior design, furniture design, and landscaping. These volumes consist of the brothers' own selections of illustrations from their commissions. Dating from the 1770s, these illustrated plates epitomize the style that influenced generations of British and American architectural and furniture designs. (22996)   $200.00

Dutch Architecture of the XXth Century

Mieras, J. P. and F. R. Yerbury [Editors]

[International]. Mieras, J. P. and F. R. Yerbury [Editors]. Dutch Architecture of the XXth Century. New York: Charles Scribner's Sons, 1926. First edition. Quarto, pp. xv, plus 100 b/w photographic plates, with index to architects. A previous owner signed the front endpaper neatly in pen in 1971. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.

It seems a bit premature to be writing a book on Dutch Architecture of the 20th century when only a quarter of it has passed, but the period between 1901 and 1926, the work of Dr. Cuypers did much to introduce the new-Gothic movement in Holland. For centuries, Dutch architecture was built in brick, but in the 19th century, Dutch brick was regarded as unworthy and hidden behind plaster. It was Dr. Cuypers who brought the brick out from behind it again, and introduced a revival of the characteristics of old Dutch architecture. Beautifully photographed. (22989)   $80.00
