Selected Titles for February 2026

Well, I'm afraid I have to 'fess up: I'm singlehandedly responsible for the current cold snap here in New England. You may remember that last month's newsletter commented that January's weather was a bit wimpy compared to December's. Mother Nature immediately took exception to my hubris and had dialed in some extremely cold temps and heavy snowfall. The first wave was almost two feet of snow, and last weekend's prediction of 2-4" was optimistic. We got another foot!

For me, the big concern is the negative numbers overnight. I have to stay vigilant or face frozen pipes. Stay tuned!

Don't know if you saw this year's Superbowl, but as someone with both Seattle and New England ties. I couldn't lose. I did wish that our Patriots had played better, but just getting that far was a win.

I hate to be a monthly provider of bad news, yet again, but we lost another giant in the world of historic preservation in the recent passing of John Beyer at 92, the last surviving founder of the celebrated New York architectural firm Beyer, Blinder, Belle. His group became a prominent New York go-to firm for sensitive renovations and expansion projects. Beyer is pictured here with the firm's proposal for rebuilding the World Trade Center after the 9-11 attacks. Link: https://www.nytimes.com/2026/01/23/arts/design/john-h-beyer-dead.html

Our final picture features a shot of my booth from previous New Hampshire OH&BE events. I always enjoy the 2 day weekend event; this year it is scheduled for 14-15 March in Manchester, and I hope you will consider attending. It's a great chance to (re)connect with fellow period homeowners and tradesmen/architects. Link: https://www.nhpreservation.org/old-house-barn-expo

We hope that February's selection has a book or two for you. We have a couple of special ones for you this month: our usual selection of ICS titles, as well as a group of both church-related architecture, and all of architect/architectural historian Tom Hubka's thought-provoking titles. Tom has done up a great bookmark for us, with his signature and an original pen and ink subject-related drawing. Thanks, Tom!

As always, happy browsing!

Eric Mendelsohn (1887-1953) was a German-British architect, known for his expressionist architecture in the 1920s, as well as for developing a dynamic functionalism in his projects for department stores and cinemas. Mendelsohn was a pioneer of the Art Deco and Streamline Moderne architecture, notably with his 1921 Mossehaus design. This book covers his sojourn in England after Hitler came to power, where he built the De La Warr Pavilion; then his work in Palestine and the United States. Connecticut River Valley Doorways: An Eighteenth-Century Flowering

Miller, Amelia F.

[New England]. Miller, Amelia F. Connecticut River Valley Doorways: An Eighteenth-Century Flowering. Boston: Published by Boston University for the Dublin Seminar for New England Folklife, 1983. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 148, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Paperback. Very Good.

Very few manifestations of sub-regional material culture on the colonial Atlantic seaboard have appealed to the popular imagination more than the distinctive houses built in the Connecticut River Valley just before the Revolution. Earlier writings have identified both the Connecticut River Valley style and its representative examples. However, Miller has accepted the greater challenge of a definitive study of the subject in terms of its sources, its spread and development, and the key role played by the builders themselves. Comprehensive in scope, and well photographed. A careful, analytical study of the valley doorways and other decorative detail. Very scarce title. (23582)  $80.00

The Glass House

Hix, John

[Architecture]. Hix, John. The Glass House. Cambridge, MA: The MIT Press, 1974. First American edition. Small quarto, pp. 208, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Cloth over Boards. Near Fine in Near Fine Dust Jacket.

This is a comprehensive survey of greenhouses. The book traces the evolution of glass enclosures from the mid 16th-century, when the desire to nurture exotic plants in often hostile climates led to the development of the glasshouse and the ingenious mechanical servicing systems, capable of creating their own artificial micro-climates. Through the technical advances in the early 19th century, large-scale constructions were built initially for private individuals and botanical societies. Towards the mid-century, with the advent of mass production and specialist component systems, the fashioning of modular constructions such as the Crystal Palace became possible. Richly illustrated with a wealth of contemporary etchings, lithographs, and photographs. (23597)  $45.00

The author presents examples of 44 architects' houses, from 13 different countries. The principles generally accepted in the world of architecture, as well as regional traditions, come out more clearly than elsewhere in the architects' house. That is the justification for this book; the architect's home, better than any other, reveals his conception of domestic culture. (23598)  $60.00

Houses Without Names: Architectural Nomenclature and the Classification of America's Common Houses

Hubka, Thomas C.

[American]. Hubka, Thomas C. Houses Without Names: Architectural Nomenclature and the Classification of America's Common Houses. Knoxville, TN: University of Tennessee Press, 2013. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 112, indexed, notes, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Includes a custom bookmark signed with original pen and ink drawing by the author. Glossy Pictorial Wraps. New.

An important book by Thomas Hubka, author of the well-known book on New England rural vernacular architecture, "Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn." In this book, Hubka points out that there are millions of ordinary, mostly working-class neighborhood houses that do not fall into the standard categories of recognized architectural styles. These unnamed homes constitute the largest percentage of American housing in all regions and historic periods, yet continue to go unclassified and thus unrecognized for preservation purposes and ignored in local architectural histories and neighborhood planning schemes. Furthermore, the standard architectural style classification scheme focuses exclusively on the facade and exterior details of a building, ignoring both similarities and differences in interior plan between buildings of the same exterior style. Based on years of field observation, this book provides a working vocabulary for the study and appreciation of America's common houses. A much-needed, thoroughly researched, and thoughtful contribution to the field of architecture and preservation. (20373)  $35.00

How the Working-Class House Became Modern, 1900-1940

Hubka, Thomas C.

[Architectural History]. Hubka, Thomas C. How the Working-Class House Became Modern, 1900-1940. Minneapolis, MN: University of Minnesota Press, 2020. First edition. Small quarto, pp. xxvi, 261, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Includes a custom bookmark signed with original pen and ink drawing by the author. Color Pictorial Wraps. New.

This book analyzes a period when millions of average Americans saw accelerated improvement in their housing and domestic conditions. It is a detailed narrative that traces changes in household hygiene, sociability, and privacy practices that launched large portions of the working classes into the middle class, reconfiguring and enriching the standard account of the domestic transformation of the American home. "This book is the most important study of common American houses to appear in the past half century. Thomas C. Hubka draws on a lifetime’s investigation of working-class houses in the decades before World War II to show us how and why the single-family houses of the contemporary ‘middle-majority’ sprung from these modest dwellings. Hubka has established an agenda that should engross architectural historians for years. " -- Dell Upton, author of American Architecture: A Thematic History. As with all of Hubka's books, very thought-provoking. (20290)  $40.00

The Building of the Eighteenth-Century Church

Clarke, Basil F. L.

[English]. Clarke, Basil F. L. The Building of the Eighteenth-Century Church. London: SPCK, 1963. First edition. Octavo, pp. 263, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Signed by a previous owner neatly in pen in 1973 on the front endpaper. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

The author gives us a fresh viewpoint on these 18th-century churches. From parish records all over England, he gives us the background to the church-building activity of the time - the discussions in the Vestry and with the architect and builder, the plans for fundraising, the petition for a faculty, and many other processes that have to be gone through when a church is to be built. A fascinating picture of the parochial and social life of England in a period when the Church was by no means as inactive as many have been led to believe. (23614)  $40.00

London Church Staves

Thorpe, Mary and Charlotte

[English]. Thorpe, Mary and Charlotte. London Church Staves. London: Elliot Stock, 1895. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 76, indexed, illustrated with b/w line drawings. Signed by a previous owner neatly in pen on the front endpaper. Ex-library; book plate from Connecticut Historical Society affixed inside front cover. Decorated Cloth over Boards. Very Good.

The church stave is the staff of office that the officers would carry. This book deals with the staves of the parishes in the city of London and the metropolis in which the administration of parochial affairs by the parish authorities was in the fullest force. The creation of fifty new parishes in Queen Anne's reign gave occasion for the making of additional staves in this district, and consequently a large number of staves bear a date of about that time. The earliest stave that survived the Great Fire is a staff dated 1677. A pretty and interesting book. (23615)  $40.00

The Churches and Abbeys of Ireland

de Breffny, Brian and George Mott

[Ireland]. de Breffny, Brian and George Mott. The Churches and Abbeys of Ireland. New York: W. W. Norton & Company Inc., 1976. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 208, indexed, illustrated with 268 photographs, with 20 of them in color. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

The authors traveled the length and breadth of Ireland to provide this comprehensive and first-hand account of some 300 surviving churches and abbeys. Their chronological narrative ranges from the simple single-celled churches of the Saints and Scholars, the early centers of worship of the autocratic Celtic Christian Church, through the magnificent flowering of Irish Romanesque and the lavish abbeys built by the Cistercians, the priories and Franciscan friaries up to the Reformation and the dissolution of the religious houses. The authors show how, most recently, the liturgical reforms of Vatican II have produced delightful and individual modern churches, in keeping with the Irish landscape, and such as can be seen nowhere else in Europe. The Comfortable House:

North American Suburban Architecture 1890-1930

[American]. Gowans, Alan. The Comfortable House: North American Suburban Architecture 1890-1930. Cambridge: MIT Press, 1987. Second Printing. American suburban houses of this period represent a unique body of architecture that is much less known and studied than it deserves. This book shows these homes, many of which could be ordered directly from catalogs (Montgomery Ward, Sears, and Aladdin, among others), to be solid in workmanship and materials, open and sunny in layout, centrally heated, and equipped with many built-in amenities. The book also studies their appeal in a wider context, as visual metaphors for American ideals and values of the immediately post-frontier period. (23591)  $30.00

It provides a useful summary of the successes and failures of both federally sponsored and private efforts to use solar technology in conjunction with the design of individual buildings and overall urban planning. In particular, it focuses on a road not taken - the integration of solar techniques into the planning of communities. The author is an energy and environmental consultant and publisher. Monastic Architecture in France from the Renaissance to the Revolution

Evans, Joan

[International]. Evans, Joan. Monastic Architecture in France from the Renaissance to the Revolution. New York: Hacker Art Books, 1981. Reprint of 1964 edition. Small quarto, pp. xlii, 187, indexed, illustrated with over 800 b/w photographic plates. An address label for a previous owner is affixed on the front endpaper. Decorated Cloth over Boards. Very Good.

France is a country so rich in architecture that it is not surprising that some of its fine buildings receive little attention. Amongst the Romanesque and Gothic churches and the Renaissance châteaux, the domestic architecture of the monasteries has been overlooked. Originally published in 1964, this book was the first study of French domestic monastic architecture since the Renaissance. The architecture corresponds to the collegiate and academic architecture of England, but its style is more splendid. To gain material for this book the author traveled all over France, and found that many of the buildings were now farms or country houses. The book includes 822 photographs, and the study is divided according to the various orders. This is a book which will appeal to art-lovers as well as architects and historians of the religious orders. (23594)  $35.00
