Selected Titles for January 2022
First off - Happy New Year to all!

Well, it was bound to happen: winter has finally arrived here at World Headquarters. Last week we got a decent snowfall, with more coming today. And for most of this week our temps will be in the single digits. The birds have, with a good covering of snow, eaten all of the berries off of my holly bushes.
The holidays were eventful, spent here with my two daughters, Steph and Kim, and their significant others. Here you see them with the first gift of mine that they opened, T-shirts commemorating my visit last summer to Guemes Island, gateway to the San Juan Islands in the Pacific Northwest. Fashion items for the hard-to-shop-for ladies.

This month's offerings feature some interesting photography titles, a nice Eric Sloane litho, an uncommon Nicholson title, and several uncommon titles on woodworking and joinery.

Happy browsing!

"The Ancient Plow": Limited Edition Signed Lithograph Print
Sloane, Eric
[Americana]. Sloane, Eric. "The Ancient Plow": Limited Edition Signed Lithograph Print. New York: Eric Sloane, 1977. Original edition. 12.5" x 21" stone lithograph print in 21.5" x 29" wooden frame, under glass, with wire hanger on the reverse, signed in pencil in the bottom right corner; numbered 101/450 Color Print with Custom Mat and Frame. Very Fine.

Eric Sloane was an American landscape painter, illustrator, and author of illustrated books on the cultural history and folklore of America, many of which have been featured in our newsletter over the years. This is the first time we've been able to offer one of his limited edition prints, and it is beautiful! There is a similar black-and-white image in his "I Remember America" book, but this image includes color, a background, and more detailing. Andrew Wyeth, who was a fan of Sloane's art and writing, said he was amazed by Sloane's "unorthodox painting methods for creating textures and lines" in his paintings, and called him "an Artistic Treasure of Americana." A beautiful work of art, professionally framed, ready to hang in your home or office. We have not viewed it outside of the frame. (20894)   $275.00

Seven Architectural Catalogs Bound in One Volume (1920s)
Copper and Brass Research Association and others
[Metal]. Copper and Brass Research Association and others. Seven Architectural Catalogs Bound in One Volume (1920s). Montreal: Peter Dobush, 1920s. First edition. Small quarto, np ~500, illustrated with b/w photographs and architectural specification drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good; mild ex-library.

This volume is unique! It appears Montreal architect Peter Dobush assembled these catalogs and had them bound for his use. The first catalog is called "Die Stahl Kirche," by the Copper and Brass Research Association, presenting photos and information about the building erected to house the Evangelica Exhibition at the International Press Exposition in Cologne. The architect was D. Otto Bartning, and it was published in 1930. The second catalog is called "Practical Design in Monel Metal," by the International Nickel Company in New York City. This undated catalog is a manual for architects and metal craftsmen defining the decorative uses and limitations of Monel metal. The photos in this catalog are exceptional! The third catalog is called "Ornamental Store Fronts and Building Entrances in Bronze," by the Copper and Brass Research Association in 1926. This catalog is also well photographed with examples of American design and craftsmanship. This catalog has been enhanced with interleaved pages added neatly with pasted-down photographs from another similar publication. The fourth catalog is called "Ornamental Bronze in Banking Rooms," by the Copper and Brass Research Association in 1929. This catalog is illustrated with full-page interior photographs from mostly East Coast banks. The fifth catalog is called "English Precedent for Modern Brickwork by the Architectural Forum in 1924. This catalog is illustrated with both photographs and architectural specification drawings. The sixth book is called "Seeing the USSR" printed by Intourist of NYC in 1931, highlighting facts about Soviet travel with many photographs of Leningrad, Moscow, and more. The last catalog is called "Metal Doors and Trim: Hollow Metal Construction Details and Specifications," by the Metal Door & Trim Co. in La Porte, Indiana about 1927. This catalog features large full-page images of beautiful 1920s commercial building exteriors which used Metal Door & Trim's products, such as the Pure Oil Building in Chicago, B. F. Keith's Theatre in Cleveland, and the Savoy-Plaza Hotel in New York City. An exceptional find that we are proud to bring to you. (20878)   $500.00

The Machine As Seen at the End of the Mechanical Age
Hulten, K. G. Pontus
[Design]. Hulten, K. G. Pontus. The Machine as seen at the end of the mechanical age. New York: Museum of Modern Art, 1968. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 218, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Decorated Metal Boards. As New in original slipcase.

This book was issued in conjunction with the Museum of Modern Art's exhibition of the same title, which was on display in 1968. The exhibit explored artists' changing attitudes toward technology as demonstrated in their works, at a time when machines that imitate human muscles were being supplanted by electronic and chemical devices that imitate the processes of the brain and nervous system. The author commented in detail on over 200 objects from Leonardo da Vinci's drawings for flying machines to recent constructions produced collaboratively by artists and engineers. He also included two kinds of functional mechanisms, the car and the camera - the former because it is perhaps the most typical 20th-century machine and most affects our daily lives, the latter because it is a picture-making, mechano-chemical device that has provided the basis for much of our current way of seeing the world. Appropriate to the book's subject matter, this volume is rivet-bound in tin can steel, with a "pop" rendering of the Museum's facade printed in color and embossed on the tin. The binding is absolutely beautiful! (20857)   $75.00

200 Years of Soot and Sweat: The History and Archaeology of
Vermont's Iron, Charcoal, and Lime Industries
Rolando, Victor R.
[New England]. Rolando, Victor R. 200 Years of Soot and Sweat: The History and Archaeology of Vermont's Iron, Charcoal, and Lime Industries signed by the author. Manchester Center, VT: Vermont Archaeological Society, 1992. First edition. Quarto, pp. viii, 296, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Signed by the author in 1995 on the front endpaper. Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

Vermont has experienced a great number of early industries not generally known to have existed in the state to the degree that archival materials and field remains have now revealed. The Green Mountains are dotted with hundreds of charcoal kiln ruins. Dozens of stone-built lime kiln ruins stand near long since flooded limestone quarries, and towering blast furnace stacks continue to greet a surprised hiker or two in the wild. Threatened by land developers, logging operations, vandalism, and weathering, these ruins' greatest enemy is the fact that few people know at all about their existence - some hidden deep in the National Forest but many just on the outskirts of cities and villages. These forgotten relics of Vermont's great industrial heritage demand renewed attention alongside the preservation of the other national and historical resources that this truly beautiful state has to offer. The plates published in this book are devoted to Spain less than a decade after the end of WWI, when it was slowly revealing itself as one of the most stimulating countries in Europe. The Club found that Spain rivaled Italy in all forms of art - painting, music, poetry, drama, and every conceivable industrial art, and they tried to reflect that in their selections for this yearbook. The member who wrote the forward remarked that "the architecture of Spain is more supple and adaptable than any that I know." One of the most desirable and informative titles of the series. The Art of Iron:
Objects from the Musée Le Secq des Tournelles, Rouen, Normandy
Morris, Kathleen M.; Alexandra Bosc; Anne-Charlotte Cathelineau
[Metal]. Morris, Kathleen M.; Alexandra Bosc; Anne-Charlotte Cathelineau. The Art of Iron Objects from the Musée Le Secq des Tournelles, Rouen, Normandy. New Haven, CT: Yale University Press, 2018. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 111, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Perfect Bound. New.

This exhibition catalog accompanied an exhibit at the Clark Art Institute in Williamstown, Massachusetts in 2018. The Musée Le Secq des Tournelles is a museum devoted to the art of wrought ironwork. The idea for the collection came from Jean-Louis-Henri Le Secq Destournelles (1818-1882), a painter who studied in Paris and Rome, and became one of the first photographers in France. As such, he was commissioned by Prosper Mérimée to photograph various French monuments when the latter became head of the historical monument department in 1845. These assignments led to his discovering numerous pieces of ironwork adorning towns and ancient monuments, and he started his collection in around 1865. His son Henry (1854–1925) continued to add to it before donating it to the City of Rouen. The museum was inaugurated in 1921. The collection reveals a wealth of artistic and picturesque iron objects, ranging historically from the Gallo-Roman era to the 20th century, and includes pieces from all over Europe as well as several objects from the East. The main themes represented are shop and property signs, cutlery, trade tools, objects of embellishment and enjoyment, and equipment and decoration for churches, homes and doors, particularly locks, coffers and caskets. The Builder's Dictionary (complete in two volumes)

When it was first published in 1734, The Builder's Dictionary was proclaimed to be the definitive English architectural encyclopedia. It was important enough to receive the approbation of the leading architects of the day: Nicholas Hawksmoor, John James, and James Gibbs. This potpourri of terminology and descriptions of techniques and trade practices was intended for use by building owners, estate managers, and gentlemen architects. The book was written to instruct the owner and user of buildings as to what the architect, the craftsman and the material supplier were doing or should be doing. America's Wooden Age: Aspects of its Early Technology
Hindle, Brooke [Editor]
[Technology/Trades]. Hindle, Brooke [Editor]. America's Wooden Age: Aspects of its Early Technology. Tarrytown, NY: Sleepy Hollow Restorations, 1975. First printing. Small quarto, pp. vii, 218, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good, ex-library.

America's Wooden Age was a wonderful era, specifically because of the nature of the prevailing technology which depended so heavily upon wood. The ubiquity of wood marked this as a peculiarly favored land, where, int he hand technology of the colonial era and in the machine technology of the early national era, the plenty of wood made significant differences. Americans used wood prodigally, as a fuel and as the chief material from which they fabricated their buildings, their transportation systems, and most of their technology. In the Wooden Age, America began her ascent to industrial primacy and to the highest standard of living in the world. This book provides access to some of the ways of wood; the enthusiasm of the age can be apprehended from the enthusiasm of the authors, who share it. A well-researched, scholarly work on early American technology and invention. Of interest to the historian and those interested in the development of technology in the 18th century and earlier. Saving Our Architectural Heritage:
The Conservation of Historic Stone Structures
Baer, N. S. and R. Snethlage [Editors]
[Stone]. Baer, N. S. and R. Snethlage [Editors]. Saving Our Architectural Heritage: The Conservation of Historic Stone Structures. Chichester, UK: John Wiley & Sons, 1997. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 425, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Decorated Boards. Very Good.

It has become obvious that public policy will play a critical role in determining what portion of our architectural heritage will be passed on to future generations and what portion will be lost to deterioration, development, and natural hazards. In order to introduce the tools and methods of economic analysis to the public policy debate on the preservation of cultural property, a multidisciplinary team of physical scientists worked with social scientists to explore how societal, economic, and ethical considerations might be integrated with technological options to lead to informed policy decisions. This volume represents an important first step in rationalizing the decision-making process for the setting of public policy in the preservation of our architectural heritage. It will be of interest not only to those actively engaged in research and conservation on stone structures, but also to those concerned with urban planning, public policy, economic analysis, and environmental standards setting. Stone: Properties, Durability in Man's Environment
Winkler, E. M.
[Stone]. Winkler, E. M. Stone: Properties, Durability in Man's Environment. New York: Springer-Verlag, 1973. First edition. Quarto, pp 230, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Cloth over Boards. Near Fine in Near Fine DJ.

This volume surveys the important stone properties, both physical and chemical, pertinent to the architect's, engineer's and stone producer's needs. Emphasis is placed on the chemical characteristics of the pollutants in air and waters and their interaction with stone which accelerates the process of stone decay, often many times faster than in rural locations in quarry or rock cut. Brief summaries accompany each chapter for better clarity and understanding to persons lacking a scientific background; the book should thus become accessible and provide information to the stone producer and consumer for a better understanding of product stone. P. B. Wight: Architect, Contractor, and Critic, 1838-1925
Landau, Sarah Bradford
[Architectural Monograph]. Landau, Sarah Bradford. P. B. Wight: Architect, Contractor, and Critic, 1838-1925 An Exhibition Organized by the Burnham Library of Architecture, The Art Institute of Chicago; Checklists of Wight's Publications, his Buildings and Projects, and those of the firm of Carter, Drake and Wight. Chicago, IL: Art Institute of Chicago, 1981. First edition. Quarto, pp. 108, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Color Pictorial Wraps. Very Good.

Wight is one of many Chicago architects who, while influential within his own lifetime, has been neglected by recent historians who have stressed Louis Sullivan, Frank Lloyd Wright, and Ludwig Mies van der Rohe. Wight's drawings were buried in the Archives of the Burnham Library since their donation in 1918, a casualty of the previous emphasis on those Chicago greats, and the antagonism of the modern movement and its functionalist doctrines to the elaborate decoration of Victorian architecture. The Wight Collection remained virtually unknown to students and scholars alike until this exhibition in 1918. The exhibition and this catalog present Wight's forgotten contribution to American architecture and the gem-like quality of his designs to a post-modern age that is more receptive to the artistic impact of architectural drawings. Material Culture of the Wooden Age

This collection of ten original essays examines the influence of wood technology upon the development of America's material environment in the 18th and 19th centuries. The authors show that ease of access to this abundant, renewable resource led to its use in agriculture, transportation, and industry. Over 90 illustrations are included in this volume, which underscore the importance of wood during the period known as America's Wooden Age. Although this is a study of an earlier age, our current concern over dwindling energy resources makes its theme especially relevant today. As a renewable resource with multiple applications in the areas of energy, building, and industry, wood has a special claim to our attention. (20787)   $30.00

The end of the era came in 1957 - the last year that Brooklyn's beloved Dodgers played at Ebbets Field before moving to sunny California. With a brilliant, entertaining text and hundreds of exciting, nostalgic photographs (many never before published), this book recovers the history of this lively city, as remembered by the millions of people who knew Brooklyn in its golden era.
