Selected Titles for January 2023

We just got a few inches of snow, but our New England winter is MIA. I'm sure Mother Nature will catch up with us, but I'm enjoying the warm weather for now ...

December 11 was a sad day for me; I lost two people who are near and dear to me. My next-younger brother Ken Schuyler passed away out in Washington State. He was a 3 year Army Vietnam era veteran, who worked for the VA until his retirement out on the West Coast. He died of covid complications. Here his is pictured with our mother and my daughter Stephanie (his goddaughter).

And my doubles-tennis partner of a decade, Bill Kennedy, passed away on the same day. Here is a picture of him; he's the one who isn't hockey legend Bobby Orr. As my father used to say, "It doesn't take to many days like this to make a year."

On a happier note: here is a shot of me with the girls toasting in the new year, with a gem of a wine from preservation pioneer Clem Labine.

April will see us selling books at an old house fair in Portland, Maine. We've been the bookstore at this event for close to 30 years, but it was canceled a couple of times because of the covid scare. I'm eagerly awaiting April 29 and the chance to see old friends and customers. Link: https://www.portlandlandmarks.org/old-house-emporium

This month's offerings have a nice mixture of subject areas for you. I am excited to get the first American edition of Ruskin's "Seven Lamps" from 1849. Arthur Little's "Early New England Interiors" is an exciting new arrival. A great many of this month's offerings are new to our inventory, including an unusual selection of Japanese titles.

Cities of Artificial Excavation: The Work of Peter Eisenman, 1978-1988

Bedard, Jean-Francois [Editor]

[Architectural Monograph]. Bedard, Jean-Francois [Editor]. Cities of Artificial Excavation: The Work of Peter Eisenman, 1978-1988 Essays by Alan Balfour, Yve-Alain Bois, Jean-Louis Cohen, Kurt W. Forster, K. Michael Hays, Arata Isozaki, Fredric Jameson. Montreal: Canadian Centre for Architecture, 1994. First edition. Quarto, pp. 236, illustrated with color and b/w photographs and drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

Between the Houses projects of the 1970s, which established Peter Eisenman as a leading architectural theorist, and his most recent, computer-aided explorations of complex geometries, lies a distinct phase in his work, a series of theoretical projects, competition submissions, and public commissions called the Cities of Artificial Excavation. This book is the first publication to document this important stage in Eisenman's career, when he not only turned his attention to the relationship between architecture and site but also reassessed, through the technique of scaling, the very idea of composition in architecture. This book presents four of the most representative and best documented of the artificial excavation projects: an urban design scheme for Cannaregio West in Venice (1978); a housing project near Checkpoint Charlie in Berlin (1980-1981, partially realized 1982-1986); a design for the University Art Museum at California State University, Long Beach (1986); and Chora L Works (1985-1986), a garden for the Parc de La Villette in Paris designed in collaboration with Jacques Derrida. Published on the occasion of the exhibition by the same name shown at the Canadian Centre for Architecture in Montreal in 1994. (21632)   $85.00

Traditional Methods of Pattern Designing

Christie, Archibald H.

[Design]. Christie, Archibald H. Traditional Methods of Pattern Designing An Introduction to the Study of Decorative Art, with numerous examples drawn by the author and other illustrations. Oxford: Clarendon Press, 1910. First edition. Octavo, pp. 327 plus 31 b/w plates, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Ex-library markings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.

This volume attempts to give a short account of traditional methods of designing patterns. The great phases through which the art of decoration has passed are pointed out and the evolution of the idea of decoration is discussed. A survey is made of a considerable number of the most common examples of patterns, and those which seem to have intimate relationship to one another are grouped together in order to show the development of the most important decorative ideas, and to analyze the means by which these are expressed. The illustrations are, with few exceptions, taken from examples of ancient art. They are drawn from a great variety of sources. A number of impressions from an interesting series of Indian cotton-printing blocks in the Victoria and Albert Museum are reproduced. This is the first time we've been able to offer this title. (21646)   $60.00

Problems in Carpentry

Roehl, L. M.

[Carpentry]. Roehl, L. M. Problems in Carpentry A Course in Practical Carpentry for Manual Training Classes. St. Paul, MN: Webb Publishing Co., 1913. First edition. Oblong octavo, pp. 110, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Ex-library markings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good; cover soiled.

The great difficulty in teaching carpentry is the lack of a method that would give the student actual carpentry work to do. Constructing miniature buildings of lumber which has been sawed to scale is one method that has been employed, but this does not give students the practice of working lumber full scale, as in the trade. Another method used is that of having students build a house, barn, woodshed or other building for someone near the school who wants such a building constructed. But in most instances, the client wants a building constructed by experienced carpenters. This course in carpentry as outlined in this book has been found to overcome successfully these difficulties. The problems are those that are met within actual carpentry, the lumber used is full scale, and the work may be done in the manual training shop at any time of the year. The author was the director of Farm Mechanics at Milwaukee County School of Agriculture and Domestic Economy in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. (21648)   $75.00

The Five Orders of Architecture

According to Giacomo Barozzio of Vignola

Tuckerman, Arthur Lyman

[Building]. Tuckerman, Arthur Lyman. The Five Orders of Architecture According to Giacomo Barozzio of Vignola to which are added the Greek orders. New York: William T. Comstock, 1896. Original edition. Quarto, pp. 12 plus 82 full page b/w plates. Ex-library markings. Decorated Boards. Very Good.

The fact that there is a demand for the works of Vignola in the United States is evidence of the truth of the saying "art has no frontiers." An illustration of a new town hall or public building in an American city reveals the same entablatures and arcades which one would expect in a railway station or hotel in Turin or Lyons. The western nations have been bound together by many links for many centuries; they have become acquainted with each other's manners and thoughts, and have taught one another the discoveries made by each in the paths of utility or beauty. This commonwealth being our inheritance, we find in these pages the explanation why it is that our arts are not distinct, why we have not discarded entablatures and pediments, and why we retain Vignola as we retain Shakespeare and Rembrandt. (21649)   $95.00

Builders' Hardware:

A Manual for Architects, Builders and House Furnishers

Blackall, Clarence H.

[Hardware]. Blackall, Clarence H. Builders' Hardware: A Manual for Architects, Builders and House Furnishers. Boston, MA: Ticknor and Company, 1890. First edition. Small Quarto, pp. x, 322, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings, plus trade and publishers' advertising. Ex-library markings. Boards. Very Good.

This book was written primarily for the architect. Most builders are already pretty knowledgeable on the subject of the hardware which they use in the construction and finish of a house, but the author claims that architects seldom go any deeper into the subject than is necessary to decide whether knobs should be one material or another. "A more extended acquaintance with the subject would do no one any harm, and might even be conducive to much good, if only in the way of providing more fittingly for the needs of the client." Chapters on metals and varieties of finish, nails, screws, bolts, hinges, door-springs, pulleys, sash fastenings, shutter fixtures, transom and skylight fittings, locks, doorknobs, closet fittings, artistic hardware, and more. A handsome volume with many illustrations. (21651)   $200.00

The Seven Lamps of Architecture

This book was the first treatise in English to teach the real significance of architecture as the most trustworthy record of life and faith of nations. It was an attempt to apply to architecture some of the principals the author sought to enforce in the case of painting, and it was influential in encouraging the Gothic revival of the time. According to Hitchcock, this book "was, of course, Ruskin's first book on architecture and its immediate appearance in America is an indication of the interest in architecture at this time, and of the fact that the early volumes of Modern Painters had already established a market for Ruskin's work." Hitchcock 1068. A very scarce first edition with beautiful plates. (21663)   $150.00

This book was intended to make artists and persons engaged in industrial artistic pursuits familiar with the results of investigation into the physical and physiological properties of color and pigment, presented in the simplest possible form, and show how the various propositions which have been laid down may be made available, either in the creation of new works, or for the comprehension of those already existing. The color plates are very helpful in illustrating the author's points, including a series of colored pages with black type that, when viewed through their white tissue guards, illustrate how the black type assumes tinges of other colors. A fascinating book for anyone interested in color and pigment. A scarce title; the Prang plates are striking. (21665)   $600.00

Andrews, Jack

[Metal]. Andrews, Jack. Edge of the Anvil: A Resource Book for the Blacksmith with a portfolio of photographs of Samuel Yellin's work. Emmaus, PA: Rodale Press, 1977. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 210, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

This is a basic book on the tools, materials and the processes of blacksmithing. It tells how to set up a forge, equip it with tools, and stock it with materials. It tells how to work metal: heating it, cutting it, hooking it, upsetting, drawing it out, twisting it, shaping it. The instructions are detailed and, because the author-illustrator is a working smith, they are accurate. Each of the trade's tools - anvil, hammer, forge, tongs, hardies, drifts, chisels, fullers, punches, swages, and flatters - is described, its uses and varieties depicted. Providing inspiration for every blacksmith is an album of photos of the work of the late Samuel Yellin, a renowned Philadelphia blacksmith who created some stunning architectural ironwork during his career. Truly a resource book for every blacksmith. (21680)   $75.00

Italian Doorways: Measured Drawings and Photographs

McGrew, Charles B.

[International]. McGrew, Charles B. Italian Doorways: Measured Drawings and Photographs. Cleveland, OH: J.H. Hansen, Publishers, 1929. First edition. Folio (10" x 14.5"), pp. 194. Beautiful b/w photographs of 108 classical Italian doorways accompanied by architectural drawings. Cloth over Boards, navy w/gilt design & lettering. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

The author undertook this study of doorways and entrances in Italy just as fascism began to spread across the country. Thus his ability to make measured drawings and take photographs was hampered in some instances. Nonetheless, he assembled and completed this study which includes early styles of Tuscan architecture through later classical styles. A visually impressive title, with elevations of all the doorways. This is the first time we've had a copy of this title with its elusive dust jacket. (21682)   $175.00

House Paints, 1900-1960

Standeven, Harriet A. L.

[Paint]. Standeven, Harriet A. L. House Paints, 1900-1960 History and Use. Los Angeles, CA: Getty Conservation Institute, 2011. First edition. Quarto, pp. vii, 147, indexed. Original Wraps. New.

These paints are encountered by conservators in a wide range of areas of 20th century cultural heritage, and not just those dealing with painted door frames or architectural finishes. Although the author discusses many such areas, perhaps the most surprising is the widespread use of house paints by modern artists, including Pablo Picasso. This volume provides a historical account of the development of the American and British house paint industries in the first half of the 20th century, and chapters include traditional oil-based paints, traditional water paints, nitrocellulose lacquers, oleoresinous paints, emulsion paints, and conservation. A professional and thorough study of house paints. (19152)   $75.00

Sukiya: Japanese Architecture

Kinoshita, Masao

[International]. Kinoshita, Masao. Sukiya: Japanese Architecture New Introduction by Clay Lancaster. Tokyo: Shokokusha Publishing Co., 1964. First edition. Quarto, pp. 134, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Text in Japanese and English. Signed by a previous owner in 1971 on the back of the title page. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

The Sukiya style, which originated during the Muromachi, Momoya, and Edo periods (1340 to 1867 AD) in association with the Zen cult, has impressed many foreign architects who have constantly searched for the significant roots of good design. Frank Lloyd Wright and Mies Van der Rohe come first to mind, the former with his imaginative interlocking planes, and the latter with his economy of expression. In this book, the author defines the essential core of the Sukiya style under three different architectural factors: Sabi, Iki and contemporary Sukiya. All of these factors are related to an atmosphere that possesses tranquility and serenity, both stemming from Nature. This title is rarely found in the US; this is our first time offering it for sale. (21633)   $125.00

Tokyo

Nouet, Noel

[Japanese]. Nouet, Noel. Tokyo. Tokyo: Noel Nouet, 1946. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 6 plus 50 offset lithograph sketches of Tokyo scenes. Original Wraps with Cord Ties. Very Good.

This book was published shortly after WWII, and opens with an essay by the author/artist covering a history of Tokyo, including war damage to the country. The sketches are drawings of Tokyo immediately after the war, drawn starting in October of 1945 and ending in January of 1946, including drawings of famous monuments and ancient buildings that survived the war, such as National Diet, American Embassy, the Imperial Palace, temples and many other sites, including bombed and burned out neighborhoods, and districts, which were completely destroyed. Noel Nouet (1885-1969) was a French artist, painter, designer and poet who lived in Japan. In 1926 he went to Japan to work as a teacher at Shizuoka High School and in 1930 as a professor at the School for Foreign Languages in Tokyo. He began to make drawings and sketches of Tokyo in his free time. Soon his drawings were published by the Japan Times, an English language newspaper in Tokyo. More than two dozen of his designs were published in color woodblock format as Shin Hanga prints by Doi Publisher in the last half of the 1930s. It is amazing to think that Nouet could remain in Japan during the war under American persistent bombing. A good portion of the last part of the book is devoted to sketches of war damage, burned out sections of the city and decimated areas after firelight. These sketches are more than likely the first images drawn and published immediately after the end of World War II. The value of Nouet's art work has steadily been increasing since his death. This book is now seldom found, in a complete state, as many were torn apart and sold as individual pages. This book is complete with all 50 pages of drawings plus the author's 4 page English essay and a list of each drawing. A superb insight and perspective to the aftermath of Tokyo. (21645)   $100.00

Drawings by Japanese Contemporary Architects

Editorial Staff, Graphic-Sha Publishing Company

[International]. Editorial Staff, Graphic-Sha Publishing Company. Drawings by Japanese Contemporary Architects. Tokyo: Graphic-sha Publishing Company, 1982. First printing. Octavo, pp. 167, illustrated with b/w and color drawings, text in English & Japanese. Original Wraps. Very Good.

In the contemporary architecture, some drawings on papers are far more attractive than the actual buildings on the ground. The drawing is organizing a particular mental space which is different from an established picture. Seeing the drawing on paper, you can catch a glimpse of the artist's theory and logic on the actually erected building and their vision for the architecture. This book is a compilation of works from architects in their 20s to their 40s at the time they were created. Some of the artworks look very realistic and worthy of a pattern book; some look surreal and require some thought and contemplation by the viewer. Definitely an unusual and interesting book! Japanese Homes and their Surroundings

Morse, Edward S.

[International]. Morse, Edward S. Japanese Homes and their Surroundings New Introduction by Clay Lancaster. New York: Dover Publications, Inc, 1961. Reprint of 1886 edition. Octavo, pp. 372, indexed, with 300+ b/w drawings by the author. Original Wraps. Very Good.

This work deals with every aspect of the traditional Japanese home, from its general plan and major structural features to such ceremonial and traditional appointments as the tatami mats (which actually determine the size of the house), lamps, hibachi (braziers), fusuma and shoji screens, candlesticks, pillows, and tokonoma (places where art objects or flowers are displayed). It covers details of both construction and architectural ornamentation, and points out the many ways in which the traditional Japanese house achieved the almost ideal blend of art and nature, decoration and stark simplicity which is its hallmark. Since this work was first published in 1886, many of the traditional features of the Japanese home have altered under the impact of Western ideas. The work, consequently, should be particularly valuable to contemporary architects, artists, structural engineers and scholars who want a purer view of the traditional Japanese dwelling. Two 1880s Photographs of the Green Family Mansion in Worcester

Blair & Son, Worcester, MA

[Photography]. Blair & Son. Two 1880s Photographs of the Green Family Mansion in Worcester. Worcester, MA: Blair & Son, nd c. 1880. Original edition. Boudoir card photographs (5.25" x 8.5", albumen photograph mounted on stiff cardboard) Boudoir Cards. Near Fine.

The Green Family mansion was built in 1850, replacing the original family homestead built by Dr. John Green in 1757. The original homestead was divided in two (side by side) and the new mansion was built in between, complete with 42 rooms. The mansion existed as part of Green Hill Park, after the land was purchased as park land in 1905. One room was used as a laboratory for students studying native birds and another was used as a lecture, assembly, and meeting room by the Worcester Natural History Society. In 1957, after 52 years of public use, the wooden mansion was torn down, with plights of vandalism, damage from the hurricane in 1948, and high maintenance costs contributing to the decision to destroy the historic structure. These two photographs show family members enjoying the rolling, landscaped lawns that sloped towards the pond. A handsome pair. (21627)   $50.00

The Evolving House: Rational Design

Bemis, Albert Farwell

The urgency of the need for better homes, built with less waste of human effort, is recognized universally. The best way to meet that need is through the natural forces of evolution: through improvement in the physical technique of providing shelter, and the broad cooperative use of that technique by all concerns. This book suggests the cubical modular method as an improvement in such technique. It aims to analyze house structure, to state fully the terms of this important and pressing problem of our times, and to present a logical solution in the redesign of human shelter. This is the third volume of the Evolving House trilogy; the first volume traced the development of housing from caves to modern times, and the second volume analyzed the economics of shelter. William F. Lewis: A San Francisco House Builder

Small quarto, pp. 62, illustrated with b/w photographs. Perfect Bound. Good; coffee stain soils the cover and some internal pages.

This story is about how houses were built in San Francisco in the 1880's and 1890's, and about William F. Lewis who was one of the hundreds of contractors in the city who built them. Although Lewis was not prolific compared to some of them (such as the Hinkel brothers, the Rountrees, or Fernando Nelson), his career was in many ways representative. His houses, which he designed himself, look very much like other Victorian houses of the time. He took steps, it appears, to enlarge the scope of his operations, and in this he failed as did undoubtedly many other builders. And so, William F. Lewis's story tells us much about the Victorian-era house-building industry as a whole. (21656)   $30.00

What factors create a successful resort? How did the rise of lavish hotels and spas reflect the changing values of American society as the nineteenth century progressed? Historians have argued that resorts were created to meet the demands of a leisured social elite. Theodore Corbett offers a fresh, compelling argument, demonstrating that resorts created and re-created themselves to keep pace with changing times. Success came with anticipating demands, not just reacting to them. This book offers a window into shifting public values and the structure of commercial tourism. (21659)   $30.00
