Selected Titles for January 2025

Greetings and best wishes for the New Year! I hope everyone had a festive holiday season. This year, my girls came to visit me for a Christmas sleepover, from Brooklyn and Portland, Maine. Here is a photo of us three holding a nice red wine - a gift from my friend Clem Labine - in front of my Christmas holly tree.

On a personal, sad note: we lost a close friend and a force of (preservation) nature, David Hayles. David was a larger than life fellow; as a stage four cancer survivor, he took an electric bike around the world, and lived to write about it. His book on scagliola is a perennial best seller. Whenever I saw him, mostly at PTN annual meetings, he always drew the largest crowd at his demonstrations.

His latest bicycle escapade involved a trip from pole to pole - i.e. from the tip of Alaska to South America. Here he is pictured holding two of his books, while doing a scagliola demonstration.

One final shot is of a scagliola platter he made for me, upstaged by a Christmas martini, which daughter Stephanie made for me!

As a reminder of his active life, we are featuring all three of his books (#6, 7, 8).

When I did my PhD thesis research, I spent considerable time in California, in Pacific Palisades. It was a stronghold of German refugee activity (the home of Thomas Mann, and many others were there). It is inconceivable how much of our cultural heritage has gone up in smoke out there. I feel helpless, but will send money to the Red Cross, in hopes that it will make a difference.

We hope this month's offerings will find a resonance with you; we have found a nice selection of titles, in very nice condition. A special note: long runs of some very scarce periodicals.

One final "heads-up" - we will be doing another major event in mid-March - the Ephemera Fair in Greenwich, Connecticut on March 14-16. Link: https://www.ephemerasociety.org/fair/

Happy browsing!

There are probably more buildings in England constructed of brick than of any other material. Amongst these are some of the most interesting, the most picturesque and the most serviceable structures that we have in any material. Attempt has been made to illustrate all types, including buildings which are well known. The majority, however, of the buildings and details have not appeared in any book before this one, and the author took the photographs specially for this volume. Typical details are given of doorways, windows, ornaments, etc., and below each are notes and dates. This brochure states "Kinnear protection keeps the fire out of your building." A fire resisting building is menaced on all sides by the buildings surrounding it. The degree of danger depends on the type of construction, which may be frame, semi-fireproof, or a fireproof building with unprotected windows. While the owner cannot alter the conditions that threaten a building, it can be safeguarded by the installation of proper protection. The photographs show how the rolling Kinnear shutters protect buildings, and how unprotected windows allow a fire to damage the building. The Early Architecture of North Carolina

Waterman, Thomas Tileston and Frances Benjamin Johnston

[American]. Waterman, Thomas Tileston and Frances Benjamin Johnston. The Early Architecture of North Carolina A Pictorial Survey by Frances Benjamin Johnston with an Architectural History by Thomas Tileston Waterman. Chapel Hill: University of North Carolina Press, 1947. Second Edition. Folio (10" x 13"), pp. 290, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and architectural drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.

The early architecture of America is usually spoken of as English colonial, or French or Spanish colonial; that of North Carolina may properly be called colonial. But just because it comes at second-hand from overseas, it is the more indigenous, the more fully American in flavor. It is a foretaste of the intermingling of architectural strains that blossomed into a more unified style beyond the mountains when the western territories grew up. Fitted interiors, ornamental plaster work, fireplaces, stairways, doorways. All in all, a wonderful depiction. (22961)   $140.00

The author was able to reconstruct this lost architectural pattern book by examining their papers in London. A monumental work. (22963)   $50.00

Henry Inn, an art collector, designer and photographer who lived in Honolulu, has created a collection of Chinese architectural pictures that is extraordinary. The first edition came out in 1940, and the photographs used in the book were taken as recently as 1936, but many of the houses documented were bombed out of existence by Japanese invaders. Supplementing the illustrative material are several fine treatises on Chinese philosophy and culture, and their influence on the form of the Chinese dwelling. An invaluable source book of design for the architect, the decorator, the homebuilder, the garden enthusiast, and every student of Chinese culture. Given the complicated subject matter, this second edition may be even more interesting than the first edition. (22956)   $60.00

This book takes us from the birth of the American Barn in the 1600's and shows us the progress through the ages. It also shows different roof styles, and hardware as well as how to "raise" a barn. One of the better barn books, for many reasons, not the least of which are Sloane's accurate line drawings which are abundantly scattered about the text. This is the hard to find first edition in dust jacket. (22959)   $70.00

The author came to the San Francisco International Exhibition in 1894, which aroused her interest in the then little-known art of the Orient. This began a 30-year career as supervisor of art education in the San Francisco schools, and she devoted her time to building a collection of Chinese and Japanese art. In 1903, she made her first trip to the Far East to build her collection, and she also visited Oriental collections in the United States and Europe. Second edition. Quarto, pp. xx, 102, richly illustrated with b/w photos & line drawings. Originally published in 1923. Original Blue Cloth. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

This survey of English architecture from the 15th through the 18th centuries, focuses on the background architecture, the smaller houses and farm buildings that were built by carpenters and local people. In particular Rosenberg looks at the Cotswold district and what is known as the "Cotswold type" of building, which dates from 1570 to 1700. Several examples also from Surrey, Sussex and Kent. Cotswold builders used limestone, the other counties used the material they had to hand, which was timber. So these styles involved extensive timber and plaster-work. The Western Architect, July 1910 and September 1910 (two issues)

McLean, Robert Craik [Editor]

[Western US]. McLean, Robert Craik [Editor]. The Western Architect, July 1910 and September 1910 (two issues). Minneapolis, MN: Western Architect Publishing Co., 1910. First edition. Quarto, pp. xxviii, 24 (each issue) illustrated with b/w architectural drawings, photographs, and period advertising. Staplebound Wraps. Very Good.

Two very nice copies, from the era when Robert Craik McLean was its editor. McLean founded the "Inland Architect" in 1883, and edited its successor, "The Western Architect", for many years. He was one of the founders of the Western Society of Architects and of the Chicago Architectural Club. He knew most of the well known architects of his time personally, and so could write authoritatively about their work and the developments he observed in American architecture, particularly in the mid-west and west. These issues feature workingmen's houses in Hungary, the Minnesota State Fair grounds, a competition to design Oakland City Hall, and commercial and residential buildings in Minnesota, Salt Lake City, San Francisco, Los Angeles, Denver, Pennsylvania, Indiana, Cincinnati, Connecticut, Massachusetts, and Toronto. 1910s Photograph of a Construction Site

Anonymous

[Photography]. Anonymous. 1910s Photograph of a Construction Site. nd c. 1910. Original edition. Albumen photograph, 6.5" x 8.75" mounted on a gray 10" x 12" board. A second copy had a pencil inscription "Atlas Iron Works" at the top of the photograph, but this remaining photograph has no label. Photograph on Board Mount. Very Good: rounded edges, some soiling and scratches.

A terrific period photograph of eight workers on a construction site, with a lumber frame, a brick exterior, and a really interesting pulley system to transport materials to the roof. The Atlas Iron Works inscription is a mystery; the most likely candidate is Atlas Iron Works in St. Louis, but that company was established in 1922, which is likely too recent to fit this photographic format. Several other lesser known companies also used that name, so identifying the correct one will be difficult. We had two copies of this photograph in similar condition; this one does not have the Atlas Iron Works inscription on it. (22931)   $40.00

[Architecture]. Marquette Cement Manufacturing Company. Building for the Future. Chicago, IL: Marquette Cement Manufacturing Company, 1915. First edition. Quarto, pp. 65. Illustrated with full page b/w photographs. Staplebound Wraps. Very good.

Buildings that were erected in Chicago after the great fire in 1871 were already being torn down by 1915, because the replacement buildings were erected before the age of concrete. This book makes a persuasive argument for the durability of steel-framed buildings rooted to bedrock on foundations of concrete, and highlights building and construction work that was done with Marquette Portland Cement throughout the Midwest, such as the Ford Motor Building in Minneapolis; Chicago City Hall; and Great Northern Elevator in Superior, Wisconsin. Many of the photographs are annotated with the number of barrels of cement used in the construction of the building. A wonderful snapshot of early 20th century commercial construction in the United States. (19236)   $90.00
