Happy New Year! Here's wishing us all a happy and healthy 2026, in whatever form that may take.
The holidays were great for me this year; daughters Steph and Kim visited me for a few days up in Gloucester. December was much colder than January has been, and here you see the girls out on a walk with Steph's dogs, out on the neck of Gloucester harbor. We haven't had much snow to date, but what we're getting is more a nuisance than actual snowfall.

Under the heading "It's bound to happen," I fell victim to black ice. I went out to start the Volvo and didn't notice my front stoop was a sheet of ice. A tenth of a second later, I was on the ground on my asphalt walkway, having broken the fall with my left elbow and hip. As my buddy the preservation pioneer Clem Labine said, "looks like you passed your bone density test!"
It seems that lately we seem to be losing a great many professional giants. This month is no exception: the death of Allan Ludwig, the often-called "Founding Father of Gravestone Studies," whose foundational and Pulitzer-nominated work we are featuring in this newsletter at #4. His obituary in the New York Times shows him to be a man of many talents: https://www.nytimes.com/2025/12/19/arts/allan-ludwig-dead.html

We'll leave you with a whimsical Christmas tree from downtown Gloucester, made of lobster traps and buoys as ornaments, and the reminder that we'll be exhibiting at the New Hampshire Old House Fair and Barn Expo in mid march. Mark your calendars! Link: https://www.nhpreservation.org/old-house-barn-expo
Happy browsing!

A History of Prefabrication
Bruce, Alfred and Harold Sandbank

[Architecture]. Bruce, Alfred and Harold Sandbank. A History of Prefabrication. New York: John B. Pierce Foundation, 1945. Third Printing. Quarto, pp. 80, illustrated with b/w photographs. Cloth over Boards. Very Good; 1" open tear on back cover.
This book, which discusses systems and developments in the prefabrication movement, is based on a more extensive research study for the Pierce Foundation. The contents are largely made up of a series of articles taken from the original study, and reprinted from the Architectural Forum in which they appeared beginning with the issue of December 1942. The editors have added illustrations, some comments of their own, and included a directory of wartime prefabricators in the book. The prefabrication projects studied ranged from simple modification of the conventional structure to the use of radically new materials and new construction methods. An important resource for anyone interested in the history of prefabrication. Quite scarce. (23548) $100.00

Graven Images: New England Stonecarving and its Symbols, 1650-1815 - signed by the author
Ludwig, Allan I.

[Stone]. Ludwig, Allan I. Graven Images: New England Stonecarving and its Symbols, 1650-1815 - signed by the author. Middletown, CT: Wesleyan University Press, 1975. First paperback edition. Small quarto, pp. 482, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. The title page is embellished with a full page tombstone illustration and signature by the author, who celebrated this first paperback edition with an inscription on his tombstone illustration reading "the soul casts off this mortal cloth and flies to pulpy paradise." Oversized Paperback. Very Good.
In Puritan New England, with its abiding concern for things not of this world and its distrust of forms and ceremonies, only one art flourished: the symbolic art of the stonecarver of mortuary monuments. This carefully, beautifully illustrated work was the first to consider this art in depth as a meaningful aesthetic-spiritual expression, and it remains the single most important work on the subject (nominated for a Pulitzer). A guide to early forms of American religions symbolism, and a pictorial representation of the stonecutter's art. We have a second unsigned copy available at $50. (23546) $70.00

When the Cathedrals Were White:
A Journey to the Country of Timid People
Le Corbusier

[American]. Le Corbusier. When the Cathedrals Were White: A Journey to the Country of Timid People. London: Routledge, 1948. First edition. Octavo, pp. 215, illustrated with b/w drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.
Charles-Edouard Jeanneret (1887-1965), known as Le Corbusier, was a Swiss-French architect, designer, painter, urban planner, writer, and one of the pioneers of what is now regarded as modern architecture. This book was his reflection on a visit to America, especially New York, contrasting its bustling modernity with the unified, optimistic spirit of medieval Europe when cathedrals were built, symbolizing a pure, common purpose, as he envisioned a new, planned vertical city for the future. He saw the "white cathedrals" era as a time of spiritual unity and innovation, suggesting modern America's energy mirrored that, but lacked direction, and proposed a rational urban design. Henry Yevele: The Life of an English Architect

Henry Yevele's life ranged roughly from 1320 to 1400, a period during which the architectural experiments of the previous century gradually became crystallized in the enduring national style which the textbooks call "Perpendicular." This book, which brilliantly surveys one of the greatest periods of architectural achievement in the history of our race, is the first full-length biography of an English architect of the Middle Ages. It includes a great deal of research never before brought together, and is richly illustrated by plans and details, and by views of the work of Yevele and his contemporaries from photographs, prints, drawings and manuscripts. This is a brilliant and challenging book; not only one for historians and archaeologists, but for architects, and that part of the general public which realizes that it depends on architects for places to live in. Buildings in Wood
Pryce, Will

[Wood]. Pryce, Will. Buildings in Wood The History & Traditions of Architecture's Oldest Building Material. New York: Rizzoli, 2008. First edition. Quarto, pp. 320, indexed, illustrated with color photographs. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.
This epic history is the first comprehensive survey of the use of wood in architecture throughout the ages. The book is organized both chronologically and geographically. It surveys works from the oldest heritage of wooden buildings (Kyoto's Buddhist temples and Scandinavia's pagan-inspired stave churches) to the latest cutting-edge designs, proving that wood is on the rise as the preferred material in these ecologically conscious times. No region of the world with a native tradition of building with wood is left out. In North America, the book demonstrates the European origins of New England's clapboards and saltboxes, and later shows how such sophisticated California architects as Greene & Greene or Bernard Maybeck could blend age-old traditions of the Far East and Switzerland with a Pacific Coast sense of novelty and whimsy. Spectacular and diverse photographs highlight the architectural masterpieces of wooden architecture throughout the world, illustrating that wood is a building material with a deep history as well as a vibrant future. Avantgarde I 1900-1923:

[International]. Dlugac, M. Astafeva et al. Avantgarde I 1900-1923: Russisch-Sowjetische Architecktur [Russian-Soviet Architecture]. Moscow: Shchusev Architecture Museum, 1991. First edition. Quarto, pp. 319, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Text in German. Oversized Paperback. Very Good.
The Russian avant-garde between 1900 and 1923 was an explosive movement in art, literature, and architecture that created revolutionary forms, from Suprematism (Malevich) to Constructivism (Tatlin, Rodchenko), which merged with the utopian ideals of the revolution, producing non-representational art, design, and political agitation for a new society. Strongly influenced by Futurism and Cubism, it was radicalized into a new vision of art and life that continued to exert influence until the 1930s before being suppressed. This period ended with increasing state control and the establishment of Socialist Realism under Stalin, which displaced the revolutionary avant-garde artists. The book covers, among other topics, the radical reform movements, the broad spectrum of formal and stylistic experimentation in Russian architecture from 1917 to 1923, and the new architectural challenges arising from the transformation of society, including their social aspects (workers' housing, settlements, clubs and cultural centers, industrial buildings). "In this illustrated survey - the first of its kind to showcase the enormous variety and graphic appeal of these materials - Richard Cheek highlights the more visually arresting and socially compelling examples, focusing on books that reveal the character of our country as much as they do the style of our houses." [Pattern Books]. Woodward, George E. Woodward's Country Homes. New York: Excelsior Publishing House, 1865. First edition. Small octavo, pp. 166, illustrated with b/w drawings. Delves into the actual building of country homes (i.e. more than just a pattern book). Hitchcock 1425. Book plate for Ernest W. Buecheler affixed inside front cover. In the 1860s, the cities were becoming increasingly crowded. This book was written for people who wanted to live in the more rural areas an hour outside the cities, where "land can be purchased at reasonable rates, and where all the advantages of health and beauty, of retirement, pure air and attractive scenery can be enjoyed for less money." These beautiful Victorian homes were designed of timber and stone, materials easily sourced in most areas, and offered comfortable living at modest prices. There are also designs for a stable, a rural church, a carriage house, an ice house, a school house, and more. A beautiful little pattern book. Scarce. (23373) $50.00

Seattle Hardware Company was founded in 1883 and had 42 years of service to the Seattle area when this catalog was distributed. Among the big houses which gave Seattle a reputation throughout the west as a jobbing center, Seattle Hardware Company took a leading place. They shipped goods all over the state of Washington, Alaska, British Columbia, and Idaho. The company was known for its massive inventory and detailed catalogs displaying their extensive stock. The company was active until at least 1960, but the trail grows cold after that. A very attractive copy, considering these extremely large catalogs (almost 2000 pages long!) are often mishandled and damaged. (19408) $80.00

Folio (12" x 17"), pp. 140, illustrated with b/w photos and sketches made by the author and others (all architects). Gift inscription in ink on front endpaper. Trade Blue Cloth, with gilded lettering. Very Good.
The first volume of this series, was so popular that a second printing was necessary, possibly because of the advent of World War One. This second volume grew out of the interest for the first. In the Preface, the author references the difficulties in gathering the material here presented: Guy Lowell thanks two Italian Army officers who "made it possible for me to take photographs freely in the zone of combat and throughout Italy." Most of the photographs were taken in the last year of the war. Once again, this is an impressive and ambitious project, with two major reference points: Palladio's influence is shown throughout, and the 'Great War,' which is the backdrop of the project, is to be found everywhere. One of the magnificent villas has been modified to be a field hospital. An impressive period piece! (23354) $125.00

Louis Sullivan (1856–1924) was a giant of architecture, the father of architectural modernism, and one of the earliest builders of the skyscraper. Along with Dankmar Adler (1844–1900) he designed many of the buildings that defined nineteenth-century architecture not only in Chicago but in cities across America—and continue to be admired today. Among their iconic designs are the former Chicago Stock Exchange, Chicago’s Auditorium Building and Carson Pirie Scott flagship store, the Wainwright Building in St. Louis, and the Guaranty Building in Buffalo. This first-of-its-kind catalogue raisonné of the work of Adler and Sullivan—both as a team and individual architects—is a lavish celebration of the designs of these two seminal architects who paved the way for the modern skylines that continue to inspire city dwellers today. This rich, incomparable reference will be treasured by readers interested in architecture, photography, and Chicago’s rich history as an architectural mecca. (23519) $225.00

The middle Georgia area—including Baldwin, Hancock, Jasper, Johnson, Putnam, Washington, and Wilkinson Counties—is a vast living museum of classic southern architecture. First published in 1972, this sweeping survey remains one of the best books on the topic, covering primitive, Gothic, Greek Revival, and Victorian styles, and beyond. The author's descriptions of the diverse structures of the Oconee area are illustrated with more than three hundred photographs and representative floor plans. Fine architecture, as Linley shows, is greatly influenced by climate and geography, by the natural resources of the region, and by history, custom, and tradition. He considers these major factors along with such individual features as green spaces—gardens and parks—and town and city plans, viewing the architecture in relation to the whole environment. The architecture is discussed in chronological order by style and is related to the surrounding country, with each of the seven Oconee area counties presented historically and in terms of its own resources. Touring maps of the counties and the principal towns locate all structures and points of interest mentioned in the text. (23450) $25.00

New York: Society for the Preservation of Long Island Antiquities, 1977. First edition. Quarto, pp. 199, illustrated with b/w photographs. The authors received a mandate from the New York State Council on the Arts to provide a compendium of methods for saving larger estates. For the purposes of this study, a large estate was defined as residences of over 30 rooms, originally situated on 50 acres or more with several accessory buildings, and concentrated on Long Island, Westchester County, Dutchess County, and the Adirondack-Catskill areas for examination. These case studies illustrate the variables and processes involved in converting residences and grounds to new uses. For each, the text describes the original estate, the history of its transfer of ownership, its current re-use, and the process of adapting both the mansion and its site. The authors included a selection of articles dealing with issues relevant to the conversion and maintenance of large estates, and a bibliography permitting the reader to pursue the topic in greater debt.
