Selected Titles for July 2025

First of all, where has the summer (year?) gone? Our weather has been predictably unpredictable: 100+ degrees one day, and 61 degrees the next! But New England's weather is manageable by comparison to Texas' floods, and other storms to the south. My garden is loving the warm weather, as long as I can keep the tomatoes watered.

I have had a subscription to Traditional Building for years, but seldom have the time to spend on it. This month I casually looked at the issues featuring the Palladio Award winning projects, and one of them caught my eye: the restoration of Cambridge's Harvard Lampoon building. I've always loved that part of Cambridge and Harvard Square, and lived around the corner from the Lampoon building for 5 years. Great to see it back in form, ready for the next century!

The world of preservation lost two personal favorites of mine last month: Graham Gund (pictured here) and Nathan Silver. When partner Ellen Glew and I were organizing the Restoration Trade shows in the early 1990s, we always tried to get engaging keynote speakers. For the 1993 (first) event, we were lucky to have Graham Gund as our day-two speaker. He is a noted preservationist, art collector, and all-around New England treasure.

Nathan Silver's famous book "Lost New York" has been a newsletter favorite many times. We will feature one of his other titles here (see #5) and will carry others in the future. If you have a subscription to New York Times, both Graham's and Nathan's obituaries are worth a read.

This month's newsletter is another ambitious event, with special focus on paint and stucco/concrete as building components. We also have a section from McBride Nast's early 20th century series House & Garden "Making" Books. This series formed a complete library of authoritative and well illustrated handbooks dealing with the activities of the homeowner and the amateur gardener. We hope you'll find some of these titles relevant to your own library.

I will be traveling to the northwest in August, and our next newsletter will be issued in September.

Happy browsing!

Louisville Lead & Color Company was founded in 1884. It changed hands in 1902 and became Peaslee-Gaulbert until 1928, which helps us date this publication. Peaslee-Gaulbert invented ready-mix paint and became one of the largest paint manufacturing firms in the county, occupying five city blocks in Louisville. This company is credited with helping to rebuild the South after reconstruction by enabling people to paint their own homes. This pamphlet promoted mastic paint and Pee Gee finishes by displaying 18 home exteriors with their floor plans, and three home interiors. Very attractive, colorful and scarce. This is the first time we've had any publication by this company for sale. (23243)  $160.00

It has 32 floors and is the tallest base-isolated structure in the world. The concrete of its tower was made with sand from each of California's 58 counties and water from its 21 historical missions. This is the story of how France's famed cultural icon, one of the most controversial and supremely public buildings of the century, was designed and built. The author's detailed account of the Centre Pompidou - still called Beaubourg by its designers, and by Parisians - takes the form of a fascinating and insightful "building biography." It is not just a book about a building, but about the making of a building. The author presents a behind-the-scenes narrative of design process and decision making that he deftly weights with bold critical scrutiny. (23273)  $50.00

Metals in America's Historic Buildings

Gayle, Margot and David W. Look; John G. Waite

[Metal]. Gayle, Margot and David W. Look; John G. Waite. Metals in America's Historic Buildings Uses and Preservation Treatments. Washington DC: U.S. Dept. of the Interior, Heritage Conservation and Recreation Service, Technical Preservation Services Division, 1980. First edition. Quarto, pp. 170. Includes notes and bibliography. Illustrated with b/w photographs. Decorated Wraps, Black. Good.

An excellent, practical guide to the preservation of architectural metalwork. Part I is "A Historical Survey of Metals" by Margot Gayle and David W. Look. Part II is the extensive "Deterioration and Methods of Preserving Metals" by John G. Waite. Taken together, the two parts argue for a heightened awareness of the metals in our buildings and call for more investigation of proper installation, maintenance, and conservation practices. Houses for Good Living

Wills, Royal Barry

[Pattern Book]. Wills, Royal Barry. Houses for Good Living. New York: Architectural Book Publishing Co., 1946. Fourth printing. Quarto, pp. 112, sumptuously illustrated w/ b/w photographs, floor plans, and preliminary architectural sketches. Book plate from previous owner inside front cover. Cloth over Boards. Very Good; cover staining.

In this book, Royal Barry Wills, nationally known architect who has won honors in the residential-design field, shows how you can analyze your building needs and adapt one of the standard styles or "go modern"; how to budget your building money and save on costs; and what to expect from your architect. A section devoted to pictures and plans shows the reader how houses are planned to fit the needs they must serve, and how they appear when the plans have been turned into glass and wood, brick and stone. To the reader's benefit, the author genially leads from amusing but valuable observations to the lessons that flow from them. By the end of the book, one has a good working conception of how prospective home owner, architect and builder can collaborate successfully. Lovely book, scarce in any condition. In addition to the colonial style houses and floor plans, there is an entire section on entrances and details, as well as a chapter on larger buildings. (23289)  $35.00
