The chief engineer of the project was Ole Knutsen Singstad, a Norwegian-American civil engineer best known for his work on underwater vehicular tunnels in New York City. Singstad's design for the ventilation system for the Holland Tunnel made long underwater road tunnels possible. The first volume of this series, was so popular that a second printing was necessary, possibly because of the advent of World War One. This second volume grew out of the interest for the first. In the Preface, the author references the difficulties in gathering the material here presented: Guy Lowell thanks two Italian Army officers who "made it possible for me to take photographs freely in the zone of combat and throughout Italy." Most of the photographs were taken in the last year of the war. Once again, this is an impressive and ambitious project, with two major reference points: Palladio's influence is shown throughout, and the 'Great War,' which is the backdrop of the project, is to be found everywhere.
