Selected Titles for June 2022

Welcome to our spring/summer newsletter season! We seem to have jumped from winter to summer; spring lasted about a week. I had a busy May, and so my vegetable garden consists only of 8-10 tomato and basil plants, plus Swiss chard. I hope they will serve as sufficient decoration when they mature.

My son-in-law and I went out to IPTW, on the campus of Belmont College in Ohio, which is always a great venue. We had limited book offerings (see picture), but we sold quite well. One reason: this year's event had about 150 attendees, and one half (!) were, I'd guess, under 30, and of those younger members, over half were women. So we not only sold well, we found about 60 new customers. I'd like to welcome all of the new customers to our monthly e-catalog!

While there, I was able to see my old friend David Hayles, author of a good seller, his book on Scagliola. David did a demonstration of the beauty of Scagliola. He was recently back from a 21,000 mile trip around the planet on an e-bike, and had just finished a book about his trip.

As always, North Reading had a lovely Memorial Day parade, and we (my 1959 Thunderbird convertible and I) participated.

This month's newsletter has, we hope, something for you.

Happy Browsing!

Both volumes feature mostly views in Paris and London. Some of the plates feature the full building facade or a full feature, like a doorway; others feature several samples of a particular ornament, like columns. Usually these oversize portfolios have condition issues because it's hard to store them properly, but this is a really lovely set with solid bindings, five out of six ties present, and the pages in supple, clean condition with no edge chipping. One of the plates in Volume III folds out to twice the size of the others. (21252)   $200.00

Stanford White's New York - signed by the author

Lowe, David Garrard

[New York]. Lowe, David Garrard . Stanford White's New York - signed by the author. New York: Watson-Guptill Publications, 1999. Second edition. Small quarto, pp. 339, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Signed by the author on the title page. Original Wraps. Near Fine in Wraps.

Stanford White - architectural genius, draftsman par excellence, bon vivant - was one of the most famous personalities in the glittering, often sensational world of Gotham's beau monde in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. In this book, which is at once architectural retrospective, biography, and cultural and social history, the author brilliantly evokes White's life and times. A founding partner in the legendary architectural firm of McKim, Mead & White, Stanford White designed numerous urban masterpieces, including Judson Memorial Church, Washington Square Arch, Madison Square Garden, the Players, Metropolitan, and Colony Clubs, and now-vanished palazzi for a remarkable list of clients that included the Whitneys, the Vanderbilts, the Pulitzers, and the Stuyvesant Fishes. This amusing, scholarly, and elegant account of White's love affair with, and legacy to, New York City provides compelling evidence in support of the latter view. (21182)   $35.00

Terra-Cotta Skyline: New York's Architectural Ornament

Tunick, Susan

21178.jpg

[New York]. Tunick, Susan. Terra-Cotta Skyline: New York's Architectural Ornament. New York: Princeton Architectural Press, 1997. First edition, as stated. Quarto, pp.160, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Signed by a previous owner on the front endpaper. Decorated Boards. Near Fine in Near Fine Mylar-Protected DJ.

Any city walker knows the delight that a flash of colorful ornament can bestow on an otherwise gray promenade. These glazed splashes of vivid yellows, greens, cobalt blues, and metallic lusters often are made of terra cotta, which, for more than 100 years, has been an integral - but largely unrecognized - part of America's legacy. This book reveals these architectural treasures in more than 75 color images commissioned exclusively for this book, as well as more than 100 rare documents, drawings, and previously unpublished archival photographs. Accompanying text based on extensive research into the history of terra cotta provides anecdotes and insights into the working methods of the architects, sculptors, and artisans who designed with terra cotta - and the entrepreneurs and laborers involved in its manufacture. Appendices provide a concise guide to 200 existing terra-cotta buildings in New York City, and directories of terra-cotta manufacturers and preservation organizations. (21178)   $50.00

The Motel in America

Jakle, John A.; Keith A. Sculle; Jefferson S. Rogers

21200.jpg

[American Road]. Jakle, John A.; Keith A. Sculle; Jefferson S. Rogers. The Motel in America. Baltimore, MD: The Johns Hopkins University Press, 1996. First edition. Small quarto, pp. xiv, 387, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Cloth over Boards. Near Fine in Near Fine Dust Mylar-Protected Jacket.

The authors take an informative and entertaining look at the history, architecture, and business of motels in the United States. This book explores the effect on American culture as citizens became motorists. The new breed of automobile traveler rejected the hotels of the railroad era, which were located in congested downtown areas and lacked adequate parking. Instead, they came to favor the roadside lodgings outside city limits which came to be known as motels. The history of the motel, from autocamp to franchise, has long been overlooked. In this volume, motels at last receive the careful interpretation they deserve. (21200)   $40.00

Quarto, pp. 198, indexed, illustrated with more than 450 b/w and color photographs. Signed by a previous owner in 1974 on front endpaper. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

The celebrated cemeteries of New Orleans are one of the most fascinating attractions in a city noted for the exotic and the unusual. With above-ground burial a virtual necessity because of the city's environs, early inhabitants adopted the prevailing standard, erecting imposing tombs and mausoleums based on Classical, Egyptian, and Near Eastern revival styles. This volume, prepared by The Friends of the Cabildo, a leading preservationist organization, documents the development of New Orleans cemeteries, analyzes the contrasting architectural styles, traces significant funerary influences, and illustrates the delicate ironwork, immortelles, and other accoutrements that characterize the city's cemeteries. Carpenter Gothic:

Nineteenth-Century Ornamented Houses of New England

McArdle, Alma deC. and Deirdre Bartlett McArdle

21240.jpg

[New England]. McArdle, Alma deC. and Deirdre Bartlett McArdle. Carpenter Gothic: Nineteenth-Century Ornamented Houses of New England. New York: Watson-Guptill Pubns, 1978. Stated First Printing. Octavo, pp. 160, indexed, illustrated with over 150 b/w illustrations, selected bibliography. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

Carpenter Gothic is a uniquely American architectural amalgam of the 19th century. Functionally simple neo-Gothic houses were punctuated with boisterous wooden ornamentation. The authors survey this phenomenon in New England, where many of the finest examples can still be seen, and document its place in American architectural and social history. The text traces the origin of Carpenter Gothic to its roots in the "picturesque" revolt against the rigid, symmetrical demands of classic forms, and explore the social implication of Andrew Jackson Downing's "rural Gothic" designs and the emergence of Carpenter Gothic. An invaluable photographic record. (21240)   $35.00

During the 19th century, Mississippi River towns attracted artists who traveled throughout the United States producing detailed drawings of cities and towns, which were then printed and sold as lithographs or used as wood engravings to illustrate books and magazines. Depicting each street and building, as well as the natural setting and geographic features of the surrounding areas, these elaborate bird's-eye views were enormously popular. The author brings together hundreds of spectacular historical views of Mississippi River towns alongside contemporary aerial photographs and an engaging text. The result is a remarkable voyage through the 19th century and a powerful visual record of American urban development. (21241)   $50.00

Elizabethan & Jacobean Style

[Architectural History]. Mowl, Timothy. Elizabethan & Jacobean Style. London: Phaidon Press, 1993. First edition. Quarto, pp. 240, indexed, illustrated with color photographs. Cloth over Boards. Near Fine in Very Good Dust Jacket.

This splendidly illustrated book shows not only the magnificence of the architecture of Elizabethan and Jacobean houses, through specially commissioned photography, but also plunders the great pattern books of the time to reveal the roots of the often wild elaboration of the period. In both architecture and furnishings, Classical detail was constantly fused with a Tudor vernacular. The author looks at the fascinating social and cultural history of the time and the way that it is reflected in contemporary furnishings, interiors and architecture. His lively and enjoyable text creates a narrative against which the book parades a wonderful array of images. (21220)   $30.00

Art and the Machine:

An Account of Industrial Design in 20th-Century America

[Design]. Cheney, Sheldon and Martha Candler Cheney. Art and the Machine: An Account of Industrial Design in 20th-Century America. New York: Whittlesey House, 1936. Second Printing. Small quarto, pp. 307, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Stamped by a previous owner on front endpaper. Cloth over Boards. Very Good; glue stains inside front cover where pasted item was pulled away.

This book is the result of an intensive study of industrial design in the United States. Industrial design is rightly determined by and geared to industry as it is. The machine is the foundation fact as well as the shaping tool; it is influence and inspiration. The authors saw the beginnings of a new and truly creative art and the foundation of a new national and international culture which is a product of the mechanized world and rich in spiritual resources. The authors present a practical view of the alliance of artist and machine, and of the results up to the 1930s, together with a tentative aesthetic governing them. The authors said in the preface, "We are at the beginning of a new world of appearances, beautiful with the peculiar beauty of the machine." Scarce; this is the first time we've been able to offer this title. (21180)   $85.00

The houses that form the subject of this volume - the smaller houses of the French Court - are for the most part the dwellings built and occupied, late in the 17th century and during the 18th century, by personages attached to the King's entourage at Versailles. Near enough to the palace to enable their owners, while in residence, to fulfill all their duties near the royal person, at the same time they afforded their occupants the comforts of domestic privacy not to be expected under the same roof where the King lodged. They were veritable havens of refuge from the burdensome rigours of Court etiquette. The development of French domestic architecture exemplified by these houses is unique. Nowhere else in France is there to be found a group or class of moderate-sized houses of like character. These homes were endowed with peculiar excellencies of design and a polite grace of unpretentious Classic expression. (21172)   $85.00

In the great cities of Europe, the home of our Western classical sculptural heritage, people marvel at the wonderful statues that adorn the majestic cathedrals. But as the sun sets, another breed of beast, the product of the hand of a different sort of sculptor, comes into its hour. They are beasts which sit as they have for as long as eight centuries, peering down upon the sleeping European cities and towns. They are the Gothic gargoyles. They are of a breed of creatures which frighten us with their appearance, while intriguing us with their mystery. This book is the story of these little known beasts and a tribute to the anonymous craftsmen who created them. (21177)   $35.00

Very Good in Good Mylar-Protected DJ.

We occasionally come across a book, nonarchitectural in subject matter, which is of great value to the architectural designer. The designer of architectural ornament has, since the earliest times, been influenced by natural forms. The Egyptians conventionalized the lotus, the Greeks the acanthus, and derived a variety of ornamental forms which persist to this day. But many people are tiring of copying what some one else designed long ago. The author of this book grasped the need for new ornamental forms and has provided a wealth of material to inspire the designer. By means of a camera equipped for microscopic magnification, the photographs of plants and flowers are displayed in a size where we can see delicate detail and subtle modulations. (21192)   $100.00

The Dynamics of Architectural Form

21221.jpg

[Design]. Arnheim, Rudolf. The Dynamics of Architectural Form. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1977. First edition. Small quarto, pp. vi, 289, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.

The author is an authority on the psychological interpretation of the visual arts. In this volume, he turns his experienced eye to the visual aspects of buildings, and he amplifies his theories with new features specific to the medium of the architect. The sheer size of buildings, the interaction between immoble structures and mobile humans, the complex correspondences between inside and outside, occupied and open spaces, the variable relations between horizontal expanse and vertical ascent - all have unexpected perceptional consequences, which the author explores with clarity and precision. Arnheim's strikingly original approach will stimulate professionals and students concerned with the theory and practice of modern and historical architecture. (21221)   $20.00

[Flooring]. The Interior Hardwood Co. Design Book, Parquet Floors and Borders. Indianapolis, IN: The Interior Hardwood Co., 1895. Original edition. Oblong small quarto, pp. 17, illustrated with b/w drawings. The pages are not numbered so it's unclear whether it's complete. If so, the plate numbers are unconventional. Fair; front cover is soiled, wrinkled, and detached, with the word "Floor" sliced away; back cover soiled and deeply creased.

It was difficult to find any information on The Interior Hardwood Company, but it was in existence at least 10 years before this catalog was issued. These lovely plates displayed their ornamental wood-carpets, parquetry, and borders. Their designs were wonderfully intricate and detailed. Very hard to find; this is our first time offering this title. (21255)   $80.00

These new doors were a great improvement over the popular designs that were used on earlier garages, such as sliding doors, folding doors, or swinging doors. These new doors were easy to raise and lower, and their basic design is still our preferred garage door nearly 100 years later. Includes architectural drawings for installation. (21257)   $55.00

A New and Compleat System of Architecture Delineated

Halfpenny, William

19725.jpg

[Architectural History]. Halfpenny, William. A New and Compleat System of Architecture Delineated in a variety of plans and elevations of designs for convenient and decorated houses. Together with offices and out-buildings proportioned thereto, and appropriated to the several uses and situations required. As also an estimate of each by the great Square. Prefix'd to these are ten different sorts of piers, with gates of various compositions suitable to the fame; intended for entrances to courts, gardens, &c. As also new architectonic rules for drawing the members, in all kinds and proportions of the orders. And to them are also added a perspective view of the finking pier of Westminster-Bridge, with the two adjoining arches; and a method proposed by trusses &c. to take 3/4 of the weight, or abutment and pressure now on the pier, and discharge it as set forth on the plate. The whole comprised on 47 copper plates, with explanations thereto in common press-work. London: John Brindley, 1749. First edition. Oblong small quarto, pp. 25 plus the copper engraved plates. Several of the 47 plates are missing (plates 7, 8, 9, 11), and two are fold-out size. Pages 6 and 10 have large, closed tears. Full Leather. Good; back cover detached but present, front cover partially detached.

William Halfpenny (active 1723-1755) was an English architecture and builder whose main importance lies in his books, which concentrate on the practical information a builder or building designer would need. Halfpenny's books were often the source for design details in 18th-century American houses, including Mount Clare in Baltimore County, Maryland, and the Chase-Lloyd House in Annapolis, Maryland. This book's engravings are beautifully presented and carefully described in the text. A rare opportunity to obtain a first edition of an important 18th-century text. (19725)   $600.00
