Selected Titles for March 2022
|
|
Well, March is here, a transitional weather month in New England. In the last week, we've had 71 degrees (a new record) and a foot of snow. But the sun is getting brighter and we're hoping for nice weather.
|
|
With that in mind, I'll remind you of the image from our July 2018 newsletter, that of Hemmings Motor News editor Richard Lentinello in a photo shoot with our all-original 1959 Thunderbird convertible. As some might recall from previous newsletters, the T-Bird has been in my family since the mid 1960s and has only 31,000 original miles. Richard has started a new magazine, "Crankshaft," which is in its first year. In the final quarterly issue, due out in the next week, he's featuring a lengthy piece on our convertible! Take a look at what he's up to: lentinello.com

|
And I want to give a special shout-out to my friend and colleague, Dr. Werner Arnold, who managed to decipher the handwriting of the original owner of our lead-off entry. Werner is retired from the Herzog August Bibliothek in Wolfenbuettel, Germany, where he has had to decipher thousands of inscriptions like ours. Thanks, Werner!
This month's offerings list is rather lengthy, and I hope I'm not testing your patience. But we have had some great stuff for you, including repeats of some old favorites, such as David Hayles' Scaglioa book, several titles by Steve Jordan, and a couple of nice copies of AGS.
Happy browsing!

The Immigrant Builder, or Practical Hints to Handy-Men
Dwyer, C. P.
|
[Building]. Dwyer, C. P. The Immigrant Builder, or Practical Hints to Handy-Men showing clearly how to plan and construct dwellings in the bush, on the prairie, or elsewhere, cheaply and well, with wood, earth or gravel. New York: Hurst & Co., 1884. Tenth edition. Small octavo, pp. 145, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings. Decorated Cloth over Boards. Very good.
Uncommon title, stating an original publishing date of 1872 by Claxton Remsen and Haffelfinger and "Tenth Edition" on the title page, a claim which Eric Smith, in Lost Skills of the 19th Century, surmises may have been a marketing ploy as "the archives have no record of any of the previous nine editions [cf. Section 1878]. Dwyer was himself an immigrant from Ireland, and wrote the book for those "with basic skills but little money." Chapters on log cabins, slab houses, plank houses, plank and stud houses, the balloon house, the frame house, construction with earth, fenceposts and gates, and much more. A title that would appeal to both historians and builders. (20980) $300.00

Tools as Art: The Hechinger Collection
Hamill, Pete
|
[Tools]. Hamill, Pete. Tools as Art: The Hechinger Collection. New York: Harry N. Abrams, 1995. First edition. Quarto, pp. 206, illustrated with color photographs. Cloth over Boards. Near Fine in Near Fine Dust Jacket.
This volume presents more than two hundred works in full color from the Hechinger Collection - an impressive collection celebrating the amazing variety of twentieth-century art that represents or incorporates tools and hardware. There are elegant and witty sculptures of tools - from common hammers, saws, screwdrivers, pliers, and wrenches to machine tools such as the lathe and the drill press - in wood, glass, metal, paper, and stone; constructions of found objects and building materials that use familiar forms to make works of imaginative power; and paintings, prints, and photographs depicting tools of all sorts. The artists range from well-known figures such as Jim Dine, Arman, Jean Tinguely, Lucas Samaras, Richard Estes, Claes Oldenburg, and Walker Evans to younger men and women, some of whom are published here for the first time. They all share the strong attachment to everyday things that undergirds much modern art, and it is this quality that makes their work so evocative. (20990) $35.00

Architecture for Art: American Art Museums 1938-2008 -

Tilden, Scott J. [Editor]; photos by Paul Rocheleau
|
[Architectural History]. Tilden, Scott J. [Editor]. Architecture for Art: American Art Museums 1938-2008. New York: Harry N. Abrams, Inc., 2004. First edition. Oblong quarto, pp. 239, indexed, illustrated with color photographs. Gift inscription by Paul and Elaine Rocheleau on title page; Paul was the photographer for this book. Cloth over Boards. Near Fine in Near Fine DJ.
Since 1938, when the Museum of Modern Art in New York completed its first dramatically simple steel-and-glass structure to house its collection, museum architecture in America has ascended to an exceptionally high plane of architectural and cultural significance. No longer a mere structural container for an art collection, museum architecture has in many cities become the focal point of the museum visitor's experience. This landmark survey follows the trajectory of museum architecture in America since the birth of Modernism by examining art museums throughout the country, each described in short essays by the architects and museum directors themselves and illustrated with more than 200 dazzling color photographs by noted architectural photographer Paul Rocheleau. With public interest in museum design at an all-time high, this is an opportune moment for the world to look back at seven decades of architecture for art in America - the work of 54 of the world's greatest architects for 39 museums in 20 states. Still Standing: A Century of Urban Train Station Design
Brown, Christopher
|
[Transportation]. Brown, Christopher. Still Standing: A Century of Urban Train Station Design. Bloomington, IN: Indiana University Press, 2005. First edition. Quarto, pp. 133, indexed, illustrated with color photographs. Cloth over Boards. As New in Fine DJ.
This book outlines the history and development of large urban stations throughout the Western world. The basic physical forms and their evolution are reviewed in the context of the rapid growth of train travel. The author discusses the arrival and impact of Beaux-Arts architecture in the 1890s and its profound effect on the American terminal. The end of the so-called "golden era" of passenger rail travel coincided with an architectural move away from the classicism of Beaux-Arts. New and different design forms appeared even as passengers defected to other means of transportation. These dazzling public structures have endured, but the photographs imply a disturbing question: How long can they survive? (21033) $40.00

The Architecture of Fantasy:
Utopian Building and Planning in Modern Times
Conrads, Ulrich and Hans G. Sperlich
|
[Urban Studies]. Conrads, Ulrich and Hans G. Sperlich. The Architecture of Fantasy Utopian Building and Planning in Modern Times. New York: Praeger, 1962. First American edition. Octavo, pp. 187, indexed, illustrated in b/w photographs. Original Cloth. Very Good in Good DJ.
This book presents - for the first time in English - a copiously illustrated study of architectural fantasy in the modern world. Here in one volume is a selection of the unusual and the visionary in 20th century architecture, a fascinating record of the varieties in form, geometry, material, and imagery out of which architectural fantasy is spun. The purpose of this volume is to show that 20th-century architecture actually has a tradition of more daring and imaginative structure, form, and symbol than is generally supposed. The authors demonstrate the legitimacy of the works of human and technological fantasy, and trace the genealogy of modern utopian building back to the engineering triumphs and poetic aspirations that characterized imaginative building in the last century. He has selected the elements that characterize the Greenes' work and has remained true to their original intent, while interpreting through his medium the essence of the Greenes' architectural statements. Bungalow Basics: Bathrooms

[Plumbing]. Duchscherer, Paul and Douglas Keister. Bungalow Basics: Bathrooms. San Francisco, CA: Pomegranate, 2004. First edition. 16mo, pp. 71, illustrated with color photographs. Decorated Boards. As New in Fine Dust Jacket.
Because they typically served as the sole facility for an entire family, bungalow bathrooms were built to last - which accounts for the large number of them that have aged gracefully, with many of their original features intact. Designed with an eye toward durability and ease of cleaning, this utilitarian room could nonetheless be surprisingly stylish. Like the bungalow itself, the bathroom derived much of its aesthetic character simply from the quality of its constituent materials, an attention to subtle design elements, and an innovative use of space. From the late 1920s onward, bungalow bathrooms were distinguished by increasingly bolder color schemes, as tilework, fixtures, and painted finishes came to reflect the influence of Art Deco. Part of Pomegranate's series of small bungalow design books. From the Old House Journal reference library. (21016) $25.00

A visual feast! The author has been researching, teaching and practicing 18th and 19th century American painting techniques for the past 40 years. Sandra Cohen, president of the Historical Society of Early American Decoration, is quoted as saying about this title, "The author proceeds like an archaeologist; Brown's eyes travel through the painted interiors, search and detecting clues. Each house on Brown's itinerary has a story, and her voluminous context whets our appetites to explore many different aspects of early American decoration. Brown's attraction to historic houses and their decorative painted interiors stirred her curiosity and ignited her passion to learn more about the origin of these designs, techniques and the authors of these early architectural canvases. All the details surrounding early painted floor decor before 1850 are rich and fascinating." As with Ms. Eckert's earlier books, very erudite, well researched, written, documented and illustrated. For the period homeowner and craftsman alike. From the Old House Journal reference library. (21002) $40.00

Parker Rust-Proofing Process

[Rustproofing]. Parker Rust-Proof Co. Parker Rust-Proofing Process. Detroit, MI: Parker Rust-Proof Co., nd c. 1923. First edition. Quarto, pp. 31, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Staplebound Wraps. Very Good.
All manufactured items, whether of iron, steel, copper, brass, or wood, require some type of final finish. Most finishes are applied for two purposes: to improve appearance, and to increase the life and usefulness of the product. Iron and steel demanded a finish that was more permanent than a paint or a lacquer. Parker's rust-proofing process was a chemical treatment of iron and steel that converted the surface into insoluable phosphates that were impervious to water and moisture in the air. This trade advertisement explains the process with words and images, listing all the products needed and well-known manufacturers who have been using the process: utility companies, makers of radio equipment, refrigerators, automobiles, office machines, ornamental iron, and much more. Very unusual; this is the first time we've been able to offer anything on rust-proofing. (20985) $80.00

This volume surveys the important stone properties, both physical and chemical, pertinent to the architect's, engineer's and stone producer's needs.
