Selected Titles for March 2023

I made a big mistake in telling a colleague that I thought we had broken the back of the cold, snowy weather. Tempting the gods is never smart, and in the last ten days, we've had 3 cementitious snow storms. But, ever the weather optimist, I can see spring at the end of the tunnel ...

Under the heading "who says you can't find good help?" Hank is the perfect bookstore guard cat. No trouble with chipmunks since he moved in!

As a special treat for all of our St. Patrick's Day revelers, we are featuring a beautiful green Clover Leaf paint sample piece (item #20). It will serve as a nice intro to what I think is the strongest selection of paint and color books we've offered in years.

And under the heading, "Signs of the times," I saw this photo of Victorian downspouts on Facebook. One of the comments says it all: "That level of craftsmanship went right down the drain."

And just a heads-up for next month: we will be the bookstore in Portland, Maine's Old House Emporium on April 29th and 30th. More on this next month. Link: https://www.portlandlandmarks.org/old-house-emporium

Conservation in the Nineteenth Century

Brajer, Isabelle

[Conservation]. Brajer, Isabelle. Conservation in the Nineteenth Century: Early Techniques in the Conservation of Cultural Objects. London: Archetype Publications, 2013. First edition. Quarto, pp 232. Profusely illustrated with color and b/w images and photographs. Decorated Boards, beige. New.

The papers in this volume, presented at the conference Conservation in the Nineteenth Century, suggest that we should not think of the nineteenth century as a time solely marked by conservation activities that should be criticized, but as an interesting confluence of various attitudes out of which modern conservation trends emerged. The conservation profession has its roots in the intellectual movements of the first half of the 19th century, following the Enlightenment. Scholarly study of objects made available by important archeological excavations and discoveries gave birth to the first debates on theoretical issues of preservation. Also the political events which disrupted Europe in the first decades of the 19th century played a significant role in conservation practice. In particular, Napoleon’s appropriation of works of art. As much as early conservation treatments can create many problems for conservators today, in some cases, they did prolong the life of an object that might not exist today. In some of these treatments we can see the interest in scientific methods that comprise the foundation of current conservation treatments. Nineteenth century technical inventions brought about by the industrial revolution led to the mass production of many materials. These have had both a positive and negative influence on conservation.
