Selected Titles for March 2026

Well, we seem to be coming out of one of the winters of yesteryear: our first photo is of the great oak on North Reading common, which is the backdrop for hundreds of sledders. I can still remember hours there with my two daughters. Recent winters didn't provide much snow, so this one was well received by the kids, especially with the occasional snow day!

About ten years ago, I had snow piles on my property that were still melting in July. My youngest brother lives on Oahu and called to commiserate after we got 20+ inches of snow in one day. His comment rang of "so you think you've got problems:" his island had gotten 21" (!) of rain the day before.

One of the best friends of our shop, and an esteemed preservation professional, passed away recently. Frank Matero was professor and chair of the preservation program at UPenn. I first met Frank in 2005 in Halifax, Nova Scotia at the APT annual meeting. My booth had a thousand scarce titles, and boxes of ephemera. Frank spent four hours in my booth scouring my inventory for additions to the Penn preservation collection. When my newsletters went out, he would reserve a dozen or so titles, and the UPenn Fisher librarian would see what was lacking in the collection. A marriage made in heaven!

The November newsletter was the last one Frank and I discussed; the library had a new director and purchases would have to wait. Frank sent a note back to me: "I'm going to the hospital but will study the November list there." He passed away in December, of cancer. His obituaries from UNESCO and ICCROM are 100% Frank. RIP, my friend.

Our third photo is from the New Hampsire OHFBE, which, as usual, was a total success. We saw many old friends and made as many new ones. For me, one highlight is featuring my authors with book signings at my booth. This year we had Brent Hull, from Hull Historical of Fort Worth, John Leeke, and Mary and James Gage (pictured here). We've featured the Gages' books for years but we hadn't met before this show. This was their first house fair in Manchester, but they knew many vendors and visitors through their books and were pleased to meet them.

We have a section in this newsletter of selections from the New Hampshire OHFBE offerings. We think this is one of the most exciting New Arrivals section that we've had in years. The first ten items or so are especially attractive and exceedingly scarce. And we also have a complete run of the first 13 years of Old-House Journal. We hope there's something that appeals to everyone.

As always, happy browsing!

What Shall We Do With Our Walls?

Cook, Clarence

[Interiors]. Cook, Clarence. What Shall We Do With Our Walls? New York: Warren, Fuller & Co., 1881. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 35, illlustrated with color lithographs. A gift inscription is tipped in from the publisher, Warren Fuller. Decorated Boards. Very Good, edgewear and backstrip rubbing.

The author was a 19th century American author and art critic. There are only 16 copies in institutions and the condition of this copy is significantly superior to the copy in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art. (23625)  $1000.00

Homes on the Sound for New York Business Men

Catlin, George L.

[New York]. Catlin, George L. Homes on the Sound for New York Business Men A description of the region contiguous to the shore of Long Island Sound, between New York and New Haven; also a statement of the inducements there offered the New York business man for the purchase of a suburban home within easy reach of the city. New York: George L. Catlin, 1875. First and only edition. 16mo, pp. 88, illustrated with b/w engravings and period advertising. Decorated Wraps. Very Good in Wraps.

George Catlin (1796-1872) was an American lawyer, painter, author, and traveler, famous for his portraits of Native Americans in the American frontier. Traveling to the American West five times during the 1830s, Catlin wrote about and painted portraits that depicted the life of the Plains Indians, making him a fascinating 19th century American figure whose career spanned years in the American West, London, and the northeast USA. The New Haven and Hartford Railroad connected New York City to New Haven, and this book summarized each of the stops of the railroad for someone who was house hunting. The distance from New York City, the number of trains that serviced that town, the population, the time it took to get to New York City, and the advantages and highlights of each town were all noted. If the home buyer was looking for areas with good fishing, or good soil, or beautiful scenery, or a church of a particular denomination, then this book helped narrow down where to look for a house, or a place to build. A great gift for someone who enjoys New York or Connecticut history. Only two other copies exist in institutions: the New York Historical Society, and Winterthur. An exceedingly rare piece of real estate marketing. (23624)  $500.00

Karel Teige 1900-1951:

L'Enfant Terrible of the Czech Modernist Avant-Garde

Dluhosch, Eric and Rostislav Svacha [Editors]

[Biography]. Dluhosch, Eric and Rostislav Svacha [Editors]. Karel Teige 1900-1951: L'Enfant Terrible of the Czech Modernist Avant-Garde. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1999. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 420, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Cloth over Boards. As New in Fine DJ.

Karel Teige (1900-1951), a leading figure of the avant-garde of the 1920s and 1930s, participated in every important argument and controversy of those turbulent years. He edited the most influential avant-garde journals on Czech and international cultural affairs and wrote profoundly original essays and books on the theory and criticism of art and architecture. He also produced paintings, collages, photomontages, film scripts, book covers, and typefaces and participated in theatrical performances. When the Communists took over Czechoslovakia in 1948, Teige was first hailed as a progressive, then denounced for not toeing the party line--even though he was never a card-carrying member of the Communist Party. He died a broken man, forbidden to speak out or to publish. Since the recovery of his work after the "velvet revolution" of 1989, his legacy has been revived not only in Prague, but also in Western Europe and the United States. (23635)  $70.00

Engineering Iron and Stone: Understanding Structural Analysis and Design Methods of the Late 19th Century

Boothby, Thomas E.

[Structural Engineering]. Boothby, Thomas E. Engineering Iron and Stone Understanding Structural Analysis and Design Methods of the Late 19th Century. Reston, VA: American Society of Civil Engineers, 2015. Stated First Printing. Small quarto, pp. 233, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Color Pictorial Wraps. Very Good.

In the late 1800s new design opportunities to serve business and transportation abounded, and the civil engineering profession responded with efficient design methods to meet the surging demands. This book presents a comprehensive explanation of the empirical, graphical, and analytical design techniques used during this period in the construction of both large and small buildings and bridges in wood, stone, brick, and iron. Drawing on a career-long fascination with how structural engineers do their work, the author provides specific examples of these analysis and design methods applied to arches, girders, trusses, beams, and columns. The numerous calculations, drawings, and photographs, both historic and contemporary, illustrate the application of these techniques to a wide range of structures. The quick and computationally efficient methods described in this book can assist present day engineers in understanding the behavior of these structures and give insight into their actual performance. Small quarto, pp. 112, indexed, notes, illustrated with b/w photographs and drawings. Includes a custom bookmark signed with original pen and ink drawing by the author. Glossy Pictorial Wraps. New.

An important book by Thomas Hubka, author of the well-known book on New England rural vernacular architecture, "Big House, Little House, Back House, Barn." In this book, Hubka points out that there are millions of ordinary, mostly working-class neighborhood houses that do not fall into the standard categories of recognized architectural styles. These unnamed homes constitute the largest percentage of American housing in all regions and historic periods, yet continue to go unclassified and thus unrecognized for preservation purposes and ignored in local architectural histories and neighborhood planning schemes. Furthermore, the standard architectural style classification scheme focuses exclusively on the facade and exterior details of a building, ignoring both similarities and differences in interior plan between buildings of the same exterior style. Based on years of field observation, this book provides a working vocabulary for the study and appreciation of America's common houses. A much-needed, thoroughly researched, and thoughtful contribution to the field of architecture and preservation. (20373)  $35.00

Small quarto, pp. xxvi, 261, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. Includes a custom bookmark signed with original pen and ink drawing by the author. Color Pictorial Wraps. New.

This book analyzes a period when millions of average Americans saw accelerated improvement in their housing and domestic conditions. It is a detailed narrative that traces changes in household hygiene, sociability, and privacy practices that launched large portions of the working classes into the middle class, reconfiguring and enriching the standard account of the domestic transformation of the American home. "This book is the most important study of common American houses to appear in the past half century. Thomas C. Hubka draws on a lifetime’s investigation of working-class houses in the decades before World War II to show us how and why the single-family houses of the contemporary ‘middle-majority’ sprung from these modest dwellings. Hubka has established an agenda that should engross architectural historians for years. " -- Dell Upton, author of American Architecture: A Thematic History. As with all of Hubka's books, very thought-provoking. (20290)  $45.00

One of the great but often unmentioned causes of both happiness and misery is the quality of our environment: the kinds of walls, chairs, buildings, and streets that surround us. And yet a concern for architecture is too often described as frivolous, even self-indulgent. In this book, the author starts from the idea that where we are heavily influences who we can be, and argues that it is architecture's task to stand as an eloquent reminder of our full potential. A Hut of One's Own: Life Outside the Circle of Architecture

Cline, Ann

[Architecture]. Cline, Ann. A Hut of One's Own: Life Outside the Circle of Architecture. Cambridge, MA: MIT Press, 1997. Fourth printing. Octavo, pp. 153, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs and architectural drawings. Perfect Bound. Very Good.

This small book on small dwellings explores some of the largest questions that can be posed about architecture. What begins where architecture ends? What was before architecture? The ostensible subject of the author's inquiry is the primitive hut, a one-room structure built of common or rustic materials. Does the proliferation of these structures in recent times represent escapist architectural fantasy, or deeper cultural impulses? This book is an original and imaginative attempt to rethink architecture by studying its boundary conditions and formative structures; a great read. (23662)  $30.00

Satanic Mills: Industrial Architecture in the Pennines

Binney, Marcus; Ron Fitzgerald; Randolph Langenbach; Ken Powell

[Building as Envelope]. Binney, Marcus; Ron Fitzgerald; Randolph Langenbach; Ken Powell. Satanic Mills: Industrial Architecture in the Pennines. London: SAVE Britain's Heritage, 1978. Original edition. Oblong small quarto, pp. 72, illustrated with b/w photographs. Paperback. Very Good in Wraps.

The textile mills of Yorkshire's West Riding and South Lancashire are the grandest series of buildings the Industrial Revolution produced. Yet today they are disappearing at an increasingly rapid rate. This book makes the case for their preservation, not only on architectural and historic grounds: it also argues that redundant mills can play a vital role in the region's economic regeneration. Architecture in Tennessee 1768-1897 - signed by Michael Tomlan

Patrick, James and Michael A. Tomlan

[Southern US]. Patrick, James and Michael A. Tomlan. Architecture in Tennessee 1768-1897 - signed by Michael Tomlan. Knoxville, TN: University of Tennessee Press, 1990. First paperback edition. Quarto, pp. 273, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs. A gift inscription by the book's photographer, Michael Tomlan, is on the title page. Glossy Pictorial Cover. As New.

This book provides a critical history of the regional building art that covers a period of almost one hundred and fifty years, beginning with the construction of squared-log and frame houses and ending with the architectural eclecticism that produced a wood and plaster replica of the Parthenon in Nashville as centerpiece of the Tennessee Centennial and International Exposition. These years witnessed construction of 18th-century houses in the Cumberland settlements and upper parts of the state, development of the delicate Federal style of the early 19th-century, the local Greek Revival, Gothic, and Italianate, the romantic classicism of southern nationalism, and the birth of modern styles.
