I hate to dwell on the weather, but this spring has been a huge disappointment - it was in the 20s a few nights ago, and we had a huge Nor'easter-like storm come up the coast, and, had it been 10 degrees colder, we would be digging out from two feet of snow. As it was, it was a trash-put-out-night, and the next morning I went out to salvage my recycling bin of 20+ years, in pieces!

Daughter Stephanie and I took in the Turner exhibition last weekend. It is an amazing assemblage of his work, displayed at Boston's MFA in most dramatic fashion. It's here into July, so try to see it.

This month's offerings are, in my humble opinion, quite impressive: we have some very scarce West Coast material (San Francisco, Los Angeles, Portland architectural year books) plus a scarce and early copy of Architectural Digest, two wonderful early editions of Asher Benjamin and Peter Nicholson, and much more.
Happy browsing!

6 Foot Long Carpenter's Ruler
I. P. Hyde, Southbridge, MA
|
[Building Trades]. I. P. Hyde. 6 Foot Long Carpenter's Ruler. Southbridge, MA: I. P. Hyde, nd, c. 1920. Original edition. Wooden ruler with double metal edge, made with strips of six kinds of wood, 6' long, 3.25" wide, 0.5" thick. Original patina and texture, showing use in the field. Advertising wooden ruler. Very Good.
This handsome ruler has a hole on one end for hanging on a wall. Similar rulers were mounted on the edge of tables for measuring out carpet or wallpaper, but this ruler shows no signs of such use. Instead, it was probably carried in a truck to a worksite and used for measuring drywall or lumber. Isaac Hyde founded a cutlery manufacturing company in Southbridge, Massachusetts in 1875, making rugged knives and blades for pros working in the tire, textile and other industries. Over time, Hyde entered new industries and created tools for drywall, masonry, wallpaper, surface preparation, and painting. The company still creates tools for painters, drywall pros, and remodelers today. (21138) $100.00

Pencil Techniques in Modern Designs
Atkin, Willliam W., Raniero Corbelletti, Vincent R. Fiore
|
[Design]. Atkin, Willliam W., Raniero Corbelletti, Vincent R. Fiore. Pencil Techniques in Modern Designs. New York: Reinhold Publishing Corporation, 1965. Fifth printing. Quarto, pp. vi, 122, indexed, illustrated with b/w drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Good Mylar-Protected DJ.
This volume is devoted to the pencil - that simple and fundamental tool, which, in the hands of a skilled renderer, brings an idea to life and links the potential and the actual. Pencil applied to paper by a master renderer can show both the structure and the spirit of a building. In this book you will see for the first time how effectively an old tool - the pencil - can express the new spirit of modern architecture. Here you will find examples of the work of such renderers as Hugh Ferriss, Eric Mendelsohn, Caleb Hornbostel, Paul Schweikher, Max O. Urbahn, Theodore de Postels, Richard Neutra, and Mies van der Rohe. But this book is mroe than just the presentation of well-executed renderings. It is an analysis of the whole subject of rendering. Boxed Paint Samples with Viewer
Eagle Paint & Varnish Co., Pittsburgh, PA
|
[Paint]. Eagle Paint & Varnish Co. Boxed Paint Samples with Viewer. Pittsburgh, PA: Eagle Paint & Varnish Co., nd c. 1940. Original edition. Box 5.25" x 4.25" x 0.5", containing 30 paint samples measuring 3.75" x 5". Each sample has its color on one side, and identifying name and catalog number on the reverse. Packaged with the samples is a plastic image of a house, with the siding left transparent so that it can be set upon any of the samples to view what it would look like on a house exterior. Paint samples in cardboard box. Good; box and samples are worn, one sample has a 1" strip missing from it.
A very unusual advertising item! Eagle Paint & Varnish dates back at least to 1897, and incorporated in 1933. The plastic viewer helps date this sample box to approximately the 1940s. Each sample is given a shade number in "M.B.C. Paint" and in "American Paint." M. B. Cochran founded the company, so this appears to be an early sample box. Scarce; we've never had a sample box like this before. (21169) $140.00

The Early Architecture of North Carolina
Johnston, Frances Benjamin; Thomas Tileston Waterman
|
[Southern US]. Johnston, Frances Benjamin; Thomas Tileston Waterman. The Early Architecture of North Carolina. Chapel Hill, NC: University of North Carolina Press, 1947. Original edition. Quarto, pp. xxii, 290, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs; book plate for Gerhardt Kramer inside front cover. Stamped by Hugo Graf on front endpaper. Both were architects in St. Louis that designed numerous significant buildings in Missouri. Cloth over Boards. Very Good; front endpapers reinforced with book repair tape.
The early architecture of America is usually spoken of as English colonial, or French or Spanish colonial; that of North Carolina may properly be called colonial. It is more indigenous, more fully American in flavor. It is a foretaste of the intermingling of architectural strains that blossomed into a more unified style beyond the mountains when the western territories grew up. This book covers pioneer dwellings, the domestic architecture of the Tidewater and Piedmont regions, and the early churches and public buildings. The photographs are magnificent. (21166) $95.00

American Country Houses of Today 1913
Cram, Ralph Adams [Preface]
|
[Building as Envelope]. Cram, Ralph Adams [Preface]. American Country Houses of Today 1913. New York: Architectural Book Publishing Co., 1913. First edition. Quarto, pp. viii, 189, illustrated with b/w photos, drawings, and floor plans. Page 7 has some marks where the preceding page stuck to it and was pulled apart later. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.
Organic and consistent homes in 1913, with practical, serviceable, and convenient details. They have an architectural quality that betrays the hand trained in sound schools; outwardly, whatever their stylistic analogies, they are manifestly emanations from their plans, and the result is as vital as the great domestic building of the 16th and 17th centuries. Ralph Cram was a prolific and influential American architect of collegiate and ecclesiastical buildings, often in the Gothic Revival style. Scarce volume documenting a variety of American country houses designed by many of the leading architects of the day. (21140) $95.00

Gateways & Doorways of Charleston, South Carolina
in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries
Curtis, Elizabeth Gibbon
|
[Southern US]. Curtis, Elizabeth Gibbon. Gateways & Doorways of Charleston, South Carolina in the Eighteenth and Nineteenth Centuries. New York: Bonanza, (1926). Reissue. Quarto, pp. 67, illustrated with b/w photographs. Cloth over Boards, tan. Very Good in Very Good DJ.
Charleston is one of the great cities of the South that has preserved the character of Colonial days. House after house stands much as it did during Revolutionary times, and the people of Charleston have recognized the value of the old houses, their historic doorways and ironwork, and have organized committees to preserve the city - so far as possible - as it was in the early days. Although several examples of the architecture pictured in this book have disappeared, this city still is an expression of the life of the founders of this country. An invaluable record of the architecture of the 18th and 19th centuries. (21130) $40.00

From a fabulous photographic archive in New England comes an irresistible invitation to rediscover a nearly lost vision of small-town America. Culled from over 21,000 impeccable glass negatives in the collection of the Ashfield (Massachusetts) Historical Society, these 200 beguiling images were recorded by three commercial photographers who traveled western New England at the beginning of the 20th century. Rich in detail and with startlingly contemporary compositions, this book offers an unparalleled visual catalogue of the fashion, architecture, industry, and technology that molded this part of America. Weston J. Naef has called the Howes brothers "part of a noble American tradition: the joyful chronicler. They optimistically record the simple pleasures of daily life in New England around 1900, and invite each of us to believe that our own ancestors were not so different from those we see." It's a wonderful rarity that we've been able to secure four original photographs by the Howes Brothers to offer with this title, with views of Ashfield and Turners Falls, Massachusetts. Houses: Permanence and Prefabrication

[Architecture]. Anthony, Hugh. Houses: Permanence and Prefabrication. London: Pleiades Books, 1945. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 64, illustrated with b/w drawings and photographs. Signed by a previous owner in 1946 in ink inside front cover. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.
England needed four million houses immediately after WWII. Such a program obviously called for wider and more imaginative use of the improved building methods and techniques that were developed in the years preceding the war, but were still unfamiliar to the public. This book attempts to define more clearly such terms as prefabrication, temporary housing, mass production, etc., to trace their history, and to set out in simple form the real problems involved in housing - social, technical and financial. There is no technical difficulty in the way of producing the houses needed in the quantities and of the quality required. The brake on the wheel is a political one - the fear and ignorance of obstructive and sectional interests. Hard to find in the US; this is our first time offering it. (21129) $40.00

Quarto, pp. 208, indexed, illustrated with 26 color and nearly 200 b/w images. Signed by Pauline Metcalf on the title page. Cloth over Boards with tipped in lithographic illustration. This volume celebrates the influential career of an architect and interior decorator whose interpretation of the classical style provided America's Gilded Age with a shining and memorable legacy. Best known for his collaboration with Edith Warton in the seminal book The Decoration of Houses, Codman was a major force in the colonial revival movement that transformed America in the late 19th century. His influence is seen everywhere today, from The Breakers of Newport to the elegant New York town houses he designed for the fashionable merchant princes of New York. This is a thorough study of Codman's New England roots, the milieu in which he worked, and the variety of his elegant designs. Beautifully illustrated and comprehensively researched, this volume of essays considers Codman's oeuvre from perspectives well beyond the context of his classic book. (21123) $45.00

A gift inscription dated 1934 is written neatly on the front endpaper. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Good Mylar-Protected DJ.
The domestic architecture of Venice represents an unbroken tradition of eight or nine hundred years, to which every style from the Byzantine to the Baroque has made its contribution without interrupting continuity. The palaces of the Canal, the villas of the terra firma, even the simple farm houses, are full of suggestion, not only in composition, but in the sympathetic handling of materials. Any student of design will welcome the assemblage of photographs and sketches that the author has brought together in this volume. Particularly interesting are the detailed photographs of single features, such as windows, balconies, balustrades, doors, together with sketches of chimney tops, ironwork, and other elements. This is the first time we've been able to offer this interesting book, and it is a delight that it has come to us with its dust jacket. (21155) $75.00

Charles Rennie Mackintosh Textile Designs

|
[Design]. Billcliffe, Roger. Charles Rennie Mackintosh Textile Designs. San Francisco, CA: Pomegranate Artbooks, 1993. First edition. Quarto, pp. 112, illustrated with color photographs. Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.
One of the reasons that Charles Rennie Mackintosh's work with textiles is not so widely known - unlike his architecture, furniture and his watercolors - is that very few of his fabrics can now be bought. Fortunately, a large group of his original drawings for the textile firms of Foxton's and Sefton's, designed during his stay in Chelsea between 1915 and 1923, have survived. In this book, the author shows that with the furniture and interior designs made after 1915 the textile designs form a whole new style for Mackintosh. From the Old House Journal reference library. The Spirit of H.H. Richardson on the Midland Prairies

[Architectural History]. Larson, Paul Clifford [Editor] with Susan M. Brown. The Spirit of H.H. Richardson on the Midland Prairies Regional Transformations of Architectural Style. Ames, Iowa: Iowa State University Press, 1988. Stated First Edition. Small quarto, pp. 173, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Oversized Paperback. Very Good.
The essays in this book recreate the context in which Henry Hobson Richardson's work was built, and they interpret the designs of regional architects and builders who extracted elements, patterns of composition, and forms from the master. Although Richardson's work is found to be generally appropriate to the land and the time period, the region's towns and cities use Richardson in different ways, their motives varying according to their aesthetic and political needs. The forces that determined prairie cities - such as systems of transportation and commerce - are examined in detail. The essayists also look at the land and its resources and their role in urbanization, in settlement patterns, and in the overall appearance of towns across the grasslands. The geographical location of Syracuse, its industry and especially its location on the Erie Canal, were factors propitious for its growth and development as an industrial center within New York State. After the Civil War, Syracuse experienced a building boom which offered unusual possibilities for the builder-architect. Although there was an increase of formal education for architects during the second half of the nineteenth century, many regional architects learned their trade in the office of an architect or of a builder-architect; the distinctions were not always finely drawn. One of these architects was Archimedes Russell, who came to Syracuse from New England in 1862. Russell became an extremely prolific architect. With about 700 commissions to his credit he played a large role in shaping the physical environment of Central New York. An attractive selection of his architectural legacy is presented in this book, illustrating ten of the styles in which he worked. From the Old House Journal reference library. (21148) $20.00

[Building Materials]. The Automatic Fire Escape Company. Automatic Fire Escape. Tilton, NH: Columbia Mantel Co., nd c. 1915. First edition. Small quarto, pp. 7, illustrated with b/w drawings. Staplebound Wraps. Very Good.
A quick escape from fire in all classes of buildings is imperative. Various kinds of fire escapes, other than the regulation iron ladders attached to buildings, existed at the time, which employed ropes, pulleys, rubber, and elastic seats and springs, but they were not automatic. They required quick thought and action to operate, and people in a burning building are often not clear-headed. With this company's system, all the person had to do was slip the life belt over the shoulders and let the body weight operate the machine. A clever innovation that was indestructible and dependable. This is the first time we've offered anything on fire escapes. (21132) $30.00

Making Room: Women and Architecture (Heresies 11)
Heresies Collective
|
[Architecture]. Heresies Collective. Making Room: Women and Architecture (Heresies 11) Vol. 3 No. 3. New York: Heresies Collective, 1981. First edition. Quarto, pp. 96, illustrated with b/w photographs. Perfect Bound. Very Good in Wraps.
Heresies is an idea-oriented journal devoted to the examination of art and politics from a feminist perspective, in the hopes that the journal would stimulate dialogue around radical political aesthetic theory, encourage the writing of the history of women, and generate new creative energies among women. In this issue devoted to the relationship between women and architecture, the authors refer to and expand on the humanist tradition of architecture through viewpoints, themes, and strategies that demonstrate how the connections between women's lives and their environment are to a large extent a consequence of political and economic actions, both in a repressive and a liberating sense. Some themes explored are: the powerlessness women feel in not being able to control their own environments; women's creative responses to domestic confines; identification of an ongoing women's culture in the home; concern for human comfort and multiplicity of use; and women in the design process. Noteworthy is a profile of architect Julia Morgan's work in California. Scarce. (21089) $35.00
