This handsome ruler has a hole on one end for hanging on a wall. Similar rulers were mounted on the edge of tables for measuring out carpet or wallpaper, but this ruler shows no signs of such use. Instead, it was probably carried in a truck to a worksite and used for measuring drywall or lumber. Isaac Hyde founded a cutlery manufacturing company in Southbridge, Massachusetts in 1875, making rugged knives and blades for pros working in the tire, textile and other industries. Over time, Hyde entered new industries and created tools for drywall, masonry, wallpaper, surface preparation, and painting. The Tuileries Palace stood on the right bank of the River Seine, directly in front of the Louvre. It was the usual Parisian residence of most French monarchs, from Henry IV to Napoleon III, until it was destroyed by fire in 1871. Empress Eugenie's apartment was above the private apartment used by her husband Napoleon III. These lovely lithographs illustrate features in the apartment suite. A very unusual advertising item! Eagle Paint & Varnish dates back at least to 1897, and incorporated in 1933. The plastic viewer helps date this sample box to approximately the 1940s. Each sample is given a shade number in "M.B.C. Paint" and in "American Paint." M. B. Cochran founded the company, so this appears to be an early sample box. The geographical location of Syracuse, its industry and especially its location on the Erie Canal, were factors propitious for its growth and development as an industrial center within New York State. After the Civil War, Syracuse experienced a building boom which offered unusual possibilities for the builder-architect. Although there was an increase of formal education for architects during the second half of the nineteenth century, many regional architects learned their trade in the office of an architect or of a builder-architect; the distinctions were not always finely drawn. One of these architects was Archimedes Russell, who came to Syracuse from New England in 1862. Russell became an extremely prolific architect. With about 700 commissions to his credit he played a large role in shaping the physical environment of Central New York.
