Selected Titles for May 2023 | |
Spring is finally here, sort of! The lawn actually could use a mowing, and we've had a lot of rain, but very few days over 60 degrees. I suspect by this time next month, we'll be wishing for air conditioning.
April was a busy month. Our last newsletter did well, and we did a lot of preparation for the Portland (Maine) Old House Emporium. It was the first of the traditional Old House fairs since the pandemic hit, and we were nervous to see how it would perform after a four year hiatus.
| |
We had a 20-foot booth, with a wood window restoration demonstration by John Leeke in one corner. We had a nice selection of scarce titles and bargain books, which were a big draw. The photos at the left are from our booth. Traffic on Saturday was steady, but a bit slow, which was cause for concern. The gremlin was, apparently, the sunny weather on day one: competing with lawn mowers! But on day two, Mother Nature aided us with a day-long deluge, and we could hardly keep up with the book buyers.
All in all, it was a great event. We saw dozens of old friends, and added 40-50 new customers to our mailing list. Welcome to our newsletter!

I recently saw this image on Facebook. My favorite comment: "That's all I need, to be stood up by a Dutch Colonial!" For your very own copy, see item #7 below.
Next month we will be exhibiting at a book fair in Newport, Rhode Island. Hope to see some of you there! Link: https://www.finebooksmagazine.com/events/newport-rare-book-fair-2023-06-02
This month's selection features several signed Eric Sloane books, and an extensive selection of books on color and design.

The Thousand and One Churches
Ramsay, William and Gertrude L. Bell

Small quarto, pp. xii, 580, indexed, illustrated with b/w photographs, architectural drawings, and folded specifications on tissue paper. Ex-library markings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good.
Written by two of the most eminent Anatolian experts of the day, this book on church history and architecture in Turkey was first published in 1909. Sir William Mitchell Ramsay (1851-1939), Scottish classical scholar and archaeologist, and Gertrude Bell (1868-1926), traveller, archaeologist and diplomatist, joined forces for an expedition investigating the Hittite and Byzantine site of Bin-Bir-Kilisse in Turkey in 1907. Bell was successful in establishing the chronology of Byzantine churches, and her findings constitute the middle two parts of the book, on buildings and ecclesiastical architecture. Ramsay contributed the first and last parts, on the historical and geographical details of the churches and an account of other notable monuments in the region. Ramsay was knighted in 1906 and both scholars were honoured by the Royal Geographical Society. In 1913 Bell became one of the first women to be elected a Fellow of the Society. (21878) $95.00

Architectural Alphabet
Steingruber, Johann David
|
[Architecture]. Steingruber, Johann David. Architectural Alphabet. New York: George Braziller, 1975. First American edition. Quarto, pp. 111, illustrated with b/w architectural drawings. Cloth over Boards. Very Good in Very Good DJ.
When Steingruber's book was originally published more than 200 years ago, it was intended for "those learned in architecture and curious readers." Anyone in either of these categories today will be delighted with this splendid edition of a classic work. Steingruber based his designs and ground plans on the letters of the alphabet, and he felt such designs could serve many purposes. He also contended that the quirks and curves of the letters would compel the architect to divide up the interiors more imaginatively. Each letter of the alphabet is used as the basis for a baroque structure. Thirty designs cover 25 letters, with I serving for both I and J, and there are alternative schemes for the letters A, M, Q, R, and X. An extensive appendix to the original edition includes the notes Steingruber wrote to accompany each design. A particular triumph of imagination and ingenuity. (21891) $55.00

Old Domestic Architecture of Holland
Yerbury, Francis Rowland [Editor]
| |
[International]. Yerbury, Francis Rowland [Editor]. Old Domestic Architecture of Holland Being a series of photographs by the editor, with introductory notes by Dr. Ir. D.F. Slothouwer, architect, and measured drawings by E. R. Jarrett, A.R.I.B.A. London: The Architectural Press, 1924. First edition. Quarto, pp. xv, 102 plates (78 b/w photographs, 24 b/w architectural drawings) Cloth over Boards. Very Good.
The reader will be struck by the realization of the subtle charm of Dutch character, expressed in the beautiful work carried out in stone, brick, wood, and even iron, which has been crafted by past masters of their art. The Dutch character is most directly shown in the simplest structures, and not in the so-called monumental architecture, and the illustrations in this book show the beauty of a simple brick wall, a well-proportioned window or door, or the natural grouping of masses without too much "architecting." In the paradox that the beauty of a piece of music is mostly expressed in the pauses, lies a truth which makes it possible to say that the beauty of architecture is felt chiefly where the attention is not made to concentrate on the architecture itself. Color and Culture: Practice and Meaning from Antiquity to Abstraction
Gage, John
|
[Color]. Gage, John. Color and Culture: Practice and Meaning from Antiquity to Abstraction. Berkeley, CA: University of California Press, 1999. First paperback printing. Quarto, pp. 335, indexed, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Perfect Bound. Very Good.
Color is fundamental to life and art yet so diverse that it has seldom been studied in a comprehensive way. This ground-breaking analysis of color in Western culture from the ancient Greeks to the late twentieth century is a John Gage triumph. With originality and erudition, he describes the first theories of color articulated by philosophers from Democritus to Aristotle and the subsequent attempts by the Romans and their Renaissance disciples to organize color systematically or endow it with symbolic power. The place of color in religion, Newton's analysis of the spectrum, Goethe's color theory, and the theories and practices that have attempted to unite color and music are among the intriguing topics this award-winning book illuminates. With a large classified bibliography, discursive footnotes, and an exhaustive index, this volume is an invaluable resource for artists, historians of art and culture, psychologists, linguists, and anyone fascinated by this most inescapable and evocative element of our perceptions. Hard to find; this is the first time we've been able to offer this title. (21890) $60.00

Stone Houses: Traditional Homes of Pennsylvania's Bucks County and Brandywine Valley

[Masonry]. Richie, Margaret Bye, John D. Milner, Gregory D. Huber. Stone Houses: Traditional Homes of Pennsylvania's Bucks County and Brandywine Valley. New York: Rizzoli, 2005. First edition. Quarto, pp. 224. Indexed, illustrated with color photos. Hardcover. New in new dustjacket.
This is a unique presentation of beloved building traditions in one of the charming and historically significant regions in the nation. Houses, barns, and outbuildings dating from the colonial and Federal periods, built with local stone predominantly in an English Cotswold vernacular style, represent a form that has become popular across the nation. The stunning photographs document a remarkable collection of early buildings, as well as more recent designs. Bucks County and the Brandywine Valley are important not only for their history as an early English settlement in the New World, but also for their role as a crucial site in the struggle for American independence. A beautiful record of a historically rich regional building tradition, and thoroughly researched. This is an excellent addition to the architectural historian's bookshelf. (20913) $45.00

The Architecture of Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company
Lombard, Joanna and Beth Dunlop

[Architectural Monograph]. Lombard, Joanna and Beth Dunlop. The Architecture of Duany Plater-Zyberk and Company. New York: Rizzoli International Publications, 2005. First edition. Small quarto, pp 176. Beautifully illustrated, includes bibliography. Hardcover. New in new dustjacket.
This book is a monograph on the highly successful urban design and architecture firm started by Andrés Duany and Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk in 1980 and is now known simply as DPZ. Credited with popularizing small towns and villages as welcome alternatives to the bleak monotony of the suburbs, DPZ champions vernacular architecture (traditional buildings with ties to local culture) in neighborhoods that share the same common features that made small-town living so livable. This book illustrates representative buildings, mainly houses, that make up some of these communities in such places as Seaside, Florida, Kentlands, Maryland, and Markham, Ontario. In addition, the book showcases individual buildings that demonstrate DPZ’s reinvigoration of a simple vernacular architecture, including the Hibiscus House in Coconut Grove, Florida, and the Carambola Villas in St. Croix. First edition. Quarto, pp. 216, illustrated with b/w and color photographs. Cloth over Boards. Near Fine in Near Fine Mylar-Protected DJ.
When constructed at the turn of the century the Flatiron Building was the tallest building in all of New York City, towering over its neighbors. An unusual building lot, bounded by Broadway, Fifth Avenue, and 23rd Street, gave the building its distinctive triangular shape, and Daniel Burnham's architecture imbued the structure with a classical dignity that is both disarming and unforgettable. This handsome photographic essay includes over 100 images of the structure, taken by such masters as Alfred Stieglitz and Joel Meyerowitz, over a 90-year period. Quotations from historical and literary sources provide insights on how the building became an architectural icon. (21916) $30.00

Architecture without Architects:
A short introduction to non-pedigreed architecture
Rudofsky, Bernard
|
[Architectural History]. Rudofsky, Bernard. Architecture without Architects: A short introduction to non-pedigreed architecture. New York: Doubleday, 1964. Eleventh printing. Small quarto, pp. 143, illustrated with b/w photographs. Original Wraps. Very Good.
In this book, the author steps outside the narrowly defined discipline that has governed our sense of architectural history, and discusses the art of building as a universal phenomenon. By avoiding the geographical and social prejudices that have obscured what he views as a total picture of architecture, he offers us glimpses of worlds that were hitherto unknown and, indeed, unsuspected. A prehistoric theater district for a hundred thousand spectators on the American continent, and underground towns and villages (complete with schools, offices, and factories) inhabited by millions of people are among the unexpected phenomena he brings to light. In short, this book introduces the reader to communal architecture— architecture produced not by specialists but by the spontaneous and continuing activity of a whole people with a common heritage, acting within a community of experience. An authoritative and well-illustrated book from Oxford that takes a detailed look at the Australian traditions of Victoriana. This book celebrates the Victorians' enthusiasm for ornament as it is full of many rich and vibrant examples. Additionally, the author intelligently outlines the Victorian approaches towards interiors, exploring how the use, the form, and the importance of a room would shape the choices of color, of shape, and of style. This book is rich with examples of intact Australian Victorian rooms -- from a mansion to a cottage. It considers whole-room and whole-house decor rather than simply trotting out a series of images of, say, fireplaces. One wishes, alas, that this book could be longer. (21937) $20.00
